The race for 2027 is heating up as former SGF, Babachir Lawal, has revealed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar sent him to offer Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023, Peter Obi, the vice presidential slot on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform.
According to Lawal, the proposal was for Atiku to run for a single 6-year term with Obi as his Vice President, after which power would shift to Obi.
Lawal disclosed this in an interview on Monday, stating that Obi declined the offer.
The revelation comes as opposition coalitions intensify talks to unseat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling APC in 2027. Atiku, Obi and other opposition figures have been holding closed-door meetings under the ADC coalition umbrella.
Meanwhile, Obi, who is now running as presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), made a separate pledge on Monday at a town hall in Sokoto for the Obi/Kwankwaso ticket.
Obi promised to reinstate the petroleum subsidy after tackling corruption, arguing that corruption remains the major challenge confronting Nigeria and that subsidy funds were being diverted by a few.
He said his administration, if elected, would tackle corruption across all sectors before reintroducing a transparent subsidy regime to ease hardship on Nigerians.
