Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82 in a London clinic after a prolonged battle with leukemia. The news was confirmed by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
Buhari died peacefully in a private clinic in London, with his family describing his passing as “a great national loss”. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced the news, revealing that Buhari passed away at around 4:30 pm local time. Tinubu has since spoken with the former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, to express his condolences and has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the UK to accompany Buhari’s body back to Nigeria.
As a mark of respect, President Tinubu has ordered all national flags to be flown at half-mast. Tributes are pouring in from political and civic leaders, honoring Buhari’s enduring legacy and life-long service. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course, and burial will follow Islamic rites.
Buhari served as Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2023 and previously as military Head of State from 1983 to 1985. He was known for his stance on anti-corruption and efforts to stabilize the economy. During his presidency, Buhari implemented key infrastructure projects and promoted agricultural development, but faced criticism over rising insecurity and economic challenges.
