In response to the recent tragic incidents in Abagana, Njikoka LGA; where a man reportedly set his wife ablaze, and a 74-year-old woman in wheelchair burnt to death, the International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, Nigeria, Anambra State Branch has embarked on advocacy and sensitization visit to the community.
Led by the Chairperson, Amara Muojeke, the FIDA delegation was received by the Traditional ruler of Abagana, Igwe Patrick Mbamalu Okeke.
At the visit, the group emphasized the urgent need for sensitization, particularly among women leaders, to ensure they are well-equipped to educate and empower other members of the community, starting from their homes.
FIDA Anambra appreciated the swift intervention of the Governor’s wife, Nonye Soludo, in providing relief materials to the affected children of the young woman and reaffirming her commitment to justice, saying that the compassionate gesture offers much-needed support to the victims, even as the push for legal redress and preventive measures against such horrific acts continues.
As an organization dedicated to the protection of women’s and children’s rights, the group said it remains resolute in advocating for justice, legal accountability and community sensitization, urging all stakeholders —government, law enforcement agencies, traditional institutions and Civil Society Organizations to work collaboratively in ensuring that such tragedies are prevented, and that perpetrators are held fully accountable under the law.
“Justice must not only be served but must also be seen to be served”, it concluded.
