Awka, Anambra State – A public affairs advocate and Co-founder of Good Governance Ministry (GGM), Mr. Ndubuisi Anaenugwu, has issued an open appeal to the Governor of Anambra State, , calling for urgent intervention in the rising cost of housing and business accommodation in Awka, the state capital.
In a letter made available to BVI Channel 1 Online, Anaenugwu expressed concern over what he described as the growing frustrations and economic hardships facing residents, particularly low- and middle-income earners, young families, entrepreneurs, and small business owners.
According to him, the increasing cost of residential accommodation and commercial spaces is placing significant pressure on residents and threatening the economic wellbeing of many households.
To address the housing deficit, he urged the Anambra State Government to partner with reputable private developers in constructing thousands of affordable housing units across strategic locations within and around Awka.
He noted that such a public-private partnership would not only provide decent and affordable accommodation for citizens but would also stimulate employment opportunities and drive economic growth across the state.
Anaenugwu also called for a strategic review of the commercial infrastructure within the capital territory, arguing that Eke Awka Market has outgrown its capacity as the principal commercial hub of Awka.
He recommended that Eke Awka be repositioned as a neighbourhood market while government accelerates the development of a modern international market at Isiagu, an area currently benefiting from increased government attention and infrastructure expansion.
According to him, the proposed market development could unlock substantial economic opportunities for thousands of households in Awka and surrounding communities, encourage private sector investments, and stimulate the development of affordable housing estates along the Isiagu growth corridor.
He further stated that the initiative would help create a new business and residential hub capable of supporting the rapidly expanding population of the state capital.
The Good Governance Ministry Co-founder emphasized that as Awka continues to grow, government planning must ensure that population growth is matched by corresponding expansion in economic opportunities, housing infrastructure, and commercial facilities.
He warned that proactive planning today would help prevent greater social and economic challenges in the future.
Anaenugwu expressed confidence in Governor Soludo’s commitment to innovation and sustainable development and appealed for thoughtful consideration of the recommendations in the interest of Ndi Anambra.
