Seven-day Ultimatum: Niger Coup Plotters Dismiss Tinubu Threat

The Economic Commission of West African States Authority of Heads of State and Government, on Sunday, in Abuja, issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Niger Republic military to release and reinstate President Mohammed Bazoum as the legitimate Head of State and government of the landlocked state.

But in a swift reaction, the Niger putschists rejected the call and warned ECOWAS against military intervention, saying, “We want to once more remind ECOWAS or any other adventurer of our firm determination to defend our homeland.”

ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government held an extraordinary meeting on Sunday at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja, to discuss the next line of action on the developments in Niger Republic.

Recognising Bazoum as the legitimate President, the bloc rehashed its earlier resolution to explore “all measures necessary” to restore democratic governance in Niger.

“Such measures may include the use of force. To this effect, the Chiefs of Defence Staff of ECOWAS are to meet immediately,” President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, said when he read a communique at the end of the Extraordinary Summit on the ‘Socio-Political Situation in the Republic of Niger.’

Our Reporter reported that members of the Nigerien Presidential Guard detained President Bazoum and later declared General Abdourahamane Tchiani as the nation’s new leader.

Tchiani, who has headed the Presidential Guard since 2011, said he was the new “President of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland.”

The military also issued a warning about “the consequences that will flow from any foreign military intervention,” saying, “Certain dignitaries…are in thinking of confrontation,” which “will end in nothing but the massacre of the Nigerien population and chaos.”

But reading the communique of ECOWAS leaders on Sunday, Touray said the bloc had resolved to recognise “only official acts of President Bazoum or his duly mandated officials, reject any form of resignation that may purportedly come from him and considered the illegal detention of President Bazoum, as a hostage situation.”

Aside from the seven-day ultimatum, the ECOWAS Authority at the Summit also imposed immediate sanctions on Niger, including the closure of land and air borders between member-states and Niger.

They also imposed a no-fly zone on the Niger Republic and suspended all commercial flights to and from Niger. They also suspended financial transactions between ECOWAS Member States and Niger.

Furthermore, assets of the Republic of Niger in the ECOWAS Central Bank, Niger state enterprises, and parastatals in commercial banks will be frozen.

Niger will also be suspended from all financial assistance and transactions with financial institutions within the ECOWAS.

Therefore, ECOWAS called on the West African Monetary Union and other similar regional bodies to implement these resolutions.

Additionally, the bloc imposed immediate travel bans and froze the assets of the military officials involved in the coup attempt, their family members and civilians who agreed to participate in any institution or government established by the Tchiani-led regime.

Touray revealed that the Authority of Heads of State had appointed and dispatched a special representative of the chair of the authority to Niger immediately to deliver its demands.

In his remarks, Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, called for swift implementation of these resolutions, demanding that the coup plotters “surrender and return to their barracks”.

“Our message is clear and unequivocal: the coup plotters in Niger must surrender, return to their barracks and allow the popular will of the people to stand and thrive without let or hindrance.

“They bear full responsibility for any breakdown of law and order, including the current atmosphere of fear and uncertainty in the country that has arisen from the military takeover.

“The decisions and recommendations made today (Sunday) and their faithful implementation by all, including the unwavering support of the international community, will serve as the bedrock upon which we can build a brighter future for Niger and the entire region,” Tinubu said.

Sunday’s meeting is at the behest of President Tinubu, who also held bilateral meetings with President Umaro Embalo of Guinea Bissau, President Iddris Deby of Chad and the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of African Affairs, Michael Health.

Present were Presidents Patrice Talon of Benin Republic, Alassane Ouattara of Cote d’Ivoire, Adama Barrow of The Gambia, Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, Umaro Embalo of Guinea Bissau, Macky Sall of Senegal and Faure Gnassingbé of Togo.

Presidents of Cape Verde, Liberia, Niger and Sierra Leone were represented.

But rejecting ECOWAS call, Niger’s military leaders warned against any military intervention in a statement read on Niger national television.

“The objective of the ECOWAS meeting is to approve a plan of aggression against Niger through an imminent military intervention in Niamey in collaboration with other African countries that are non-members of ECOWAS, and certain Western countries,” Aljazeera quoted the military spokesperson, Col. Amadou Abdramane, to have said.

I Surrendered to Save others – Akwa Ọkụkọ Tiwara Akị

The recently-kidnapped Anambra native doctor, popularly known as Akwa Ọkụkọ Tiwara Akị, has begin boasting again after regaining freedom from abductors.

Recall that Akwa Ọkụkọ, whose real name is Chinedu Nwangwu, was kidnapped barely one week ago in his hotel in Oba, Idemili North Local Government Area of the State, by unidentified gunmen, who also shot dead his two security guards during the operation.

However, Akwa’s abduction news came as a shock to many Nigerians who were conversant with his boastful comments and pomposity, as he always claimed that nothing could ever harm or happen to him as a result of his possession of wealth and spiritual powers.

Many Nigerians also exhumed previous videos of his boastful comments to make mockery of him that his money and power eventually could not save him from the hands of his abductors. Many also questioned why he even had security guards since he trusted and had so much confidence that his spiritual power could grant him any kind of protection he needed.

Be it as it may, the popular native doctor who consumed one full week in the den of his abductors was eventually reportedly released over the weekend after his abductors were said to have made a ransom demand of 300 million naira. The reports of his release was corroborated by videos trending on the social media. The videos obtained by this reporter, Izunna Okafor, show Akwa Ọkụkọ’s supposed friends and youths of his community celebrating and making merry for his release.

Speaking in one of the videos, Akwa Ọkụkọ Tiwara Akị, who also still looks fresh and honey with his golden necklace, narrated how the gunmen stormed the hotel and whisked him away. He also boasted that the abductors came with different grades of sophisticated guns and tested all on his body, but that none could penetrate him, before he eventually willingly surrendered himself to them, to prevent them from killing other people in the hotel as they had already lied everybody down and were ready to cause a bloodbath.

The 24-year-old native doctor also claimed that he was innocent and was not owing anybody nor had he diverted anybody’s money or even offended anyone; hence his spiritual powers could not fail him during the encounter and throughout his stay in the hands of his abductors.

He also opined that it was only things — money or charms (magical powers) — that can save a man in the time of trouble, even as he boasted that he has the two and has them in abundance.

Simon Ekpa Rejects Nnamdi Kanu Order

Simon Ekpa, the Finland based factional leader of the proscribed Indigenous People Of Biafra—IPOB, has rejected the call by Nnamdi Kanu to end sit-at-home in the Southeast region.

Kanu, the embattled leader of the separatist movement on Friday evening, had called for an end to all sit-at-home in the Southeast region aimed at compelling the federal government to release him from detention.

Kanu made the call in a handwritten letter authorized to his special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, which was read out to newsmen during a world press conference held in Enugu today.

He warned in the letter that any individual engaging in sit-at-home in the region is no longer his disciple.

Kanu also in the letter warned his self-acclaimed disciple, Ekpa to “desist from calling for any sit-at-home henceforth” and “to make a public announcement to the effect that he (Ekpa) is in receipt of a direct order from him (Kanu) to end any pending sit-at-home in place at the moment”.

But while reacting to Kanu’s directive in a statement, Ekpa described it as fake, adding that it is not only a joke but an insult taken too far.

The Ebonyi born rabble rouser urged his headless supporters to disregard the letter which he said was manufactured by the Department of Security Service (DSS).

He said, “Our attention has been drawn to the fake letter from the pit of hell being paraded by @SaharaReporters and other Nigeria media claiming that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu wrote a letter.

“It is not only a joke but an insult taking too far that the leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra is being misrepresented in this way.

“As the Prime Minister of Biafra under the leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, i call on all Biafrans to disregard the fake letter coming from DSS. We can’t take any order from the Islamic DSS and that is final.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu must be released and he must address Biafrans from Finland. That is the condition of the Prime Minister of Biafra and the Biafra Republic Government In Exile.”

The staff of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Unizik, Awka, Anambra state who for 3-4 years (2019-2023) have not been payrolled into the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, IPPIS earlier today had a peaceful protest within the school premises to further make their excruciating pains known to the school management and the Federal Government.

Unizik Unpaid staff of 3-4 years groan in excruciating pain during protest.

Addressing them during the Protest, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Admin, Prof. Joseph Ifeanyichukwu Ikechebelu empathized with the depressed/Uncaptured staff who couldn’t hold back their tears in agony. According to Prof. Ikechebelu, the University management is very much aware of the precarious situations of the Unpaid staff and they are working round the clock to ensure they are all captured into IPPIS.

Although, his explanations were more of the regular statements they have been hearing for the past 4years without any meaningful outcome, according to some of the protesters.

Reacting to what he said, some of the Unpaid staff who spoke to us narrated their ordeal below :

we can’t continue like this, both the school management and the Federal Government(IPPIS) ain’t so open to what’s actually happening. Painfully enough, so many new staff are still being employed till date and captured whilst there are so many staff yet to be enrolled. ”

Speaking further, they made an open allegations that unless you know a Senator or highly placed individuals, you may not be captured as most of their colleagues who had been captured into to IPPIS were all recommended. Unless you get a written notice from the VC, no one would enroll you even if you travel to Abuja for capturing.

As a group, they seek the speedy intervention of the Law makers and Federal Government before most of them die of depression.

You’d recall that Prof. Oby Orogbu, Member representing Awka North/South at the green chambers took the Pain of IPPIS Uncaptured staff of Unizik to National Assembly during her submissions at the Plenary session, she seeked for the escalation of the issue.

Cultists Kill, Behead Rival Member Inside Awka Market

The incident happened in the morning as traders were opening their shops for the days business, a source said.

The source said the slain man identified as Igwe Omeli, was a notorious cultist, who was always used by the leadership of the market to collect toll.

“He was hacked down in the market, around 7am. He sighted members of the rival cult, and made efforts to escape and also alert his gang members, but he was not lucky.

“His head was cut off, including his manhood, and his assailants took them away, leaving the trunk lying inside a line in the market.

“His real name is Amobi. There was a time he was brutally attacked and dump for dead.

“Since then he has been in hiding. He even ran away from the hospital where he was being treated. He sneaks in and out of his family house.

“Later on, he was engaged by one vigilante outfit. Once a cultist, you must go down. One thing people must know is that cultists don’t forgive. Even when you repent, there will still come for you,” the source said.

Spokesperson for Anambra State Police Command, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the incident, saying that operatives of the command have been despatched to the scene.

Our Reporter learnt that the incident caused traders who had come out for their businesses to hurriedly shut down their shops, for fear of reprisal by the rival group.
