Okowa Abandons Flood Victims

The protestors numbering over 100 from various communities in the Isoko South Local Government Area of the state on Thursday stormed the Government House.

Delta state flood victims have stormed the state government house, Asaba to protest against the corrupt way and manner compensation funds were disbursed to victims”.

The protest comes less than 24 hours after the state finance commissioner, Fidelis Tilije, while defending the 13 percent derivation funds accrued to the state as recently exposed by the Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike, said that during the recent flooding that affected the state, the government released part of the N14.7 billion 13 percent derivation funds so far received to cater for victims.

The protestors numbering over 100 from various communities in the Isoko South Local Government Area of the state on Thursday stormed the Government House, along Awai Road, Asaba and barricaded the entrance.

They condemned the “fraudulent and corrupt manner” government officials carried out the payment of compensation to flood victims last week at Oleh.

The protestors who issued a 14-day ultimatum to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to compensate them warned that they would hold the ‘mother of all protests’ at the Government House if the ultimatum was ignored.

The protesters displayed placards with various messages, one of which accused one Moses, an aide to the Isoko South council chairman, of conniving with the camp commandant of the Isoko Central School IDPs camp and other government officials, especially the state orientation bureau to shortchange flood victims.

One of the protesting victims, who simply identified himself as Ewoma, lamented the “fraudulent and corrupt” way the government officials in charge of the compensation carried it out. He alleged that several millions of naira meant for flood victims have found their way into private pockets.

“Even the St Michaels College IDPs camp Oleh was full of discrimination and was used as a conduit to loot government treasury. One Prosper, an aide on DESOPADEC (Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission) to the state governor was larger than life at the camp, ejecting, rejecting and treating victims with disdain while accepting majorly only victims from his area, Igbide community and Uzere community where his political godfather, the DESOPADEC MD, Askia Ogieh hails from.

“We were not taken good care of, and when the government officials came to Oleh to pay victims compensation of N50, 000 and N100, 000 each as the case may be, to our surprise, people that were being paid were strangers with strange faces, their family members, girlfriends who were never seen any day at the ICS camp.

“For every 20 names that they called, only two or three will come out among the real flood victims while the rest that was paid were never known to us or even seen in the camp. The payment the government officials came for was just a mere jamboree to amass illicit wealth to our own detriment.

“The fraud and corruption that took place at the ICS IDPs camp were enormous. Those government officials only came to pay themselves, not flood victims with what happened last week at the ICS IDPs camp, Oleh.”

Some of the flood victims, on Monday staged a protest at Isoko South secretariat, Oleh to register their grievances over the non-payment of their compensation.

Addressing the protesting flood victims at the Government House entrance gate, the chief economic adviser to the state governor, Kingsley Emu, appealed to the victims to remain calm.

He promised to tell Governor Okowa about their plight for appropriate and immediate action to be taken.

He, however, appealed to them to return to their various communities pending when they shall get feedback from the governor whom he said was not in the state.

2023: APC Rejects Technology that may Effect Credible Election

The All Progressives Congress, APC has kicked against the deployment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS and the INEC Results Viewing Portal, IReV, saying that Nigeria is not yet ready for such technology.

Prior to this, there have been reports that the ruling party was scheming to have the INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood removed over his insistence to deploy technology to enhance and strengthen the credibility of the electoral process.

Speaking on Wednesday evening to a delegation from the Commonwealth Election Observation Mission, the National Chairman of the APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, said that the nation does not has the telecoms infrastructure needed to use the system.

He said; “First, I was privileged to serve as a senator. Our concern is how ready are we to deploy some of these technologies as regards transmission because we are taking a major step in transmitting election results in real time.”

To transmit results, every part of the nation Nigeria I’m not sure that the network covers it, I know that even in parts of Abuja there is no network and we have from now till February when in substantial parts of the country there is no electricity.”

INEC must assure us 100 percent that as at when due in transmitting results they are ready because they spoke about recharging batteries but we had in previous elections when it says it cn’t recharge”.

National Organising Secretary of the party, Ambassador Suleiman Argungu also kicked against it saying;

“As a rider to what the national chairman just said about INEC transmitting results directly during the coming election, apart from the issue of electricity that is unstable, a lot of the villages and communities bordering other countries for instance my state Kebbi that is bordering two nations during the previous elections the network of Nigeria for all the networks, Glo, MTN, Airtel you can’t get them.”

If you want to get them you have to use the number of the other countries to reach them. So, during election I don’t see how transmission of result will work. I see it coming.”

Reasons Wealthy Nigerians Should Pay More Taxes- Budget Office

Nigeria’s Budget Office has said that rich Nigerians should pay more taxes in order to improve revenue generation.

The Director-General, Ben Akabueze who suggested this at the launch of the World Bank’s report titled, ‘Nigeria public finance review: fiscal adjustment for better and sustained results’ in Abuja on Monday, further said that wealthy citizens should be taxed based on their earnings.

“We need to tax the rich. We have extremely wealthy people existing side-by-side with extremely poor people. I describe it as ‘elite conspiracy’ not to distribute a fair share of the nation’s resources,” Akabueze said.

“If you own a private jet, that is fantastic. If you buy one for yourself, buy one for the country by paying 100 percent tax on it. This is not an area of debate.

“Certain sectors that are growing very well also need to pay taxes. The creative and media– you have all these folks assaulting us daily with their show of their new cars.

“I don’t see any other option. We have to tax the rich. They should pay taxes commensurate with their earnings.”

Director-general of the Debt Management Office (DMO), Patience Oniha who also spoke during a panel session, said she would prefer to have all of Nigeria’s external borrowings as concessional facilities.

Oniha explained that concessional sources were limited and as such others had to be explored.

She further emphasised the need to raise more tax revenue and source funds from the nation’s assets rather than ignoring them.

Similarly, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Chief Economic Adviser, Doyin Salami said Nigerians must pay taxes for the country to generate revenue or be forced to pay higher interest rates on borrowed funds.

“If you don’t pay tax, you will pay high-interest rates because if you don’t pay tax, we have to go borrowing and if we borrow, we have to repay the loans with higher interest rates,” Salami said.

He noted that the income difference between the wealthy and the poor in the country was “frighteningly” wide.

“We have to raise more taxes from the rich for social balance,” he added.

Ronaldo to Pay €50,000 Fine and 2-match ban for Smashing a Fans Phone

Former Manchester United striker, Cristiano Ronaldo, has been slapped with a fine of £50,000 and given a two-match ban by the football association in England.

Following an incident that occurred in April when Ronaldo smashed a fan’s phone at Goodison Park after Man United lost to Everton last season, the FA have now concluded their investigation and handed Ronaldo his punishment.

This comes just a day after it was announced that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner had his contract with United terminated by mutual agreement following his explosive interview with Piers Morgan about the management of the club and the manager, Erik ten Hag.

Ronaldo said the club had remained stagnant since Sir Alex Ferguson left back in 2013, adding that there was no growth whatsoever. He also said he had no respect for Ten Hag cause the manager had no respect for him.

Also the owners of Man United, the Glazers, announced on Tuesday evening that they were putting the club up for sale and would be listening to offers.

According to The Mirror UK, the ban means that Ronaldo would be suspended for two games if he joins another Premier League club, with Chelsea and Newcastle both linked with a move for the 37-year-old.

Ronaldo is presently in Qatar preparing for Portugal’s World Cup opening match against Ghana on Thursday

Just In: Buhari Unveils the New Naira Notes

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Wednesday morning unveiled the redesigned naira notes across the N200, N500 and N1,000 denominations.

Buhari unveiled the notes at the Council Chambers of the State House shortly before the kickoff of this week’s Federal Executive Council meeting.

Fielding questions from correspondents after the event, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, insisted that the move is not targeted at anyone.

Rather, he said the redesigned notes would give the apex bank ample control over the amount of money in circulation.

“This move is to enable the Central Bank of Nigeria have control over the size of money in circulation

“There is no need to think that the programme is targeted at anyone. During my speech at the unveiling, I said that plans for this started early in the year. We considered the pros and cons carefully.

In the past, attempts to redesign and reissue currencies have been resisted. Only a President of Muhammadu Buhari’s character could have made it happen,” he said.

At the briefing, Emefiele added that the amount of money that can be withdrawn from the counter would be reduced drastically, adding that bulk withdrawal would require several procedures and security checks to track its use.

This he said would ensure a steady transition into a cashless economy.

The CBN governor also argued that Nigerians have ample time to return the old notes in circulation adding that the apex bank will not extend the January 31, 2023 deadline.

According to him, “As of 2018, we had 86,000 touchpoints nationwide where Nigerians could deposit and withdraw money. In October 2022, that number has risen to 1.4 million touchpoints.

“That is to say we have over 1.4 million bank branches, POS points and other ancillary outfits to enable Nigerians return the old notes.”

Emefiele said the apex bank will now redesign the currency after every five to eight years, as empowered by the constitution.

Peter Obi Reply Concerning Biafra Agitation

Yesterday, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi and his running mate, Yusuf Baba-Ahmed Datti were live on NTA with Kadaria Ahmed for a town hall meeting which had a couple , audience and with that questions were thrown at them. When asked by Kadaria Ahmed his position regarding the agitation for the state of Biafra?

Peter Obi replied, telling Kadaria Ahmed he would call the person who asked the question a son and when it comes to the issue of agitation, it’s not yes or no, as people agitate everywhere, including his house. Peter Obi went on to say the first thing one does with agitators is to sit down and listen to the person who is agitating, because unless you sit down, one cannot say yes or no.

Using himself as an example, Obi said he’s a Nigerian contesting for the election who believes in the unity of Nigeria and would bring all agitators back to Nigeria and make it work for them as the reason why they are agitating is injustice.

Traffic Officers in Anambra now Operates with POS Machine- Groups

AWKA – The Human Rights, Liberty Access and Peace Defenders’ Foundation (HURIDE) and Campaign for Democracy (CD), South East Zone, have asked Governor Chukwuma Soludo to immediately disband the Anambra State Road Traffic Management Agency (ARTMA) as it is currently constituted.

The groups also called on the Governor to constitute an ARTMA made of people with character who are professionally trained to do the work with a human face.

They also said that the present Commander of the agency, Nnamdi Emmanuel a.k.a (Ochudo), should be flushed out and arrested for corruption for being behind the criminal extortion of road users in the State.

The rights groups in a statement made available to newsmen weekend said the disbandment of the agency3 has become imperative to stem the tide of corruption, abuse, high-handedness and criminalities exhibited by the men of the agency against road users in Anambra State.

In the statement signed by Dede Uzor A Uzor, Executive Director, HURIDE and Chairman, CD in the South East zone, the groups said the agency abandoned its statutory duty of managing traffics on the Anambra roads and engaged in abuse and exhortation of road users.

The groups said the state cannot set up an organisation like ARTMA purposely for profit motives, lamenting that their unconventional operation of just impounding vehicles and extorting money negates their statutory duty.

They said ARTMA remapped some major streets and roads in the State and made them one-way without adequate publicity to sensitise motorists and other road users.

They catch in on the ignorance of the motorists that some places have been turned into one way to impound people’s vehicles and exhort huge sums of money ranging from N30, 000 to N100, 000 depending on the vehicle, especially Niger-under-Bridge,” said the groups.

Continuing, the group said “: If you introduce a new law and you publicise it so that the public will know about it. Don’t use it as a bait to impound vehicles and impose outrageous fines”.

Unfortunately, they said, sometimes these people lure drivers where to park, then they would impound the vehicle and extort and collect huge sums of money from their victims.

The group also frowned at the carrying of POS machines around by ARTMA operatives which they give their victims to transfer money from their bank accounts with white buses as a notorious most dangerous group

Most of the traffic offenders said the rights groups, were commercial vehicles but the operatives looked the other way and most times and go for private cars where they can exhort huge money.

Onitsha Owerri road is the most trafficked road but they look the other way because they were commercial vehicles.

They said one pathetic case was a private school bus, Promise International School in Onitsha which was impounded and detained for one week but was released after the payment of N22, 500 and a medical doctor Gloria Hospital Awada and Fegge Onitsha had the same experience of being extorted with the same amount after he told them of being in emergency but no one listened.

You are Pushing Anambra Residents into Poverty with your Obnoxious Taxation- HURIWA to Soludo

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has warned that the Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo’s ‘taxation regime’ is making life unbearable and pushing more residents of theState into poverty.

According to HURIWA, Soludo’s ‘utopian’ mindset and policies cannot work for Anambra people

HURIWA, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, said rather than yield profits, Governor Soludo’s taxation policy is pushing more residents of the South-East State into poverty.

The group told Soludo to jettison extreme Central Bank-like policies which it said are not workable for the people of Anambra State.

HURIWA noted that since his inauguration on March 17, 2022, the former CBN governor had introduced various kinds of taxes on the poor in Anambra.
.
Commenting, HURIWA’s Onwubiko said, “Theapproach of Governor Soludo is most unfortunate because he has largely targeted the poor with his regime of unbearable taxation instead of the rich who have perfected the art and act of evading taxes in hundreds of millions of naira.

The governor’s heavy taxation on the poor is akin to muzzling the ox when it is treading out the grain which is unrealistic and unnatural.

“Now some tricycle operators have reportedly become ‘part-time’ armed robbers robbing some unsuspecting members of the public, maybe in their warped attempt to remain in business by meeting up the unattainable heavy taxes they pay to Governor Soludo’s obnoxious tax collectors.

With an estimated population of about 5,084,195 and a Gross Domestic Product of about N5.5tn, as well as a projected Internally Generated Revenue of N48bn in 2023, Anambra is not Lagos with a projected IGR ofN1.1tn in 2023 as erroneously compared by GovernorSoludo during his recent budget presentation.
GovernorSoludo’s desperation surfaced recently when he asked sons and daughters of the soil working in other States but with residences in Anambra to remit their taxes to the State government.

Governor Soludo should stop comparing Anambra to Lagos to justify his desperation to tax the poor to death; he should rather focus on the extremely rich and average individuals who are not in the tax net.”

Therights group wondered why Soludo, who boasted to have global connections during the campaign, is now pushing mostly the poor Anambra people into commercial extinction with all kinds of taxes.

“This is because his anti-poor tax regime has impoverished more residents of the State,” the group added.

The human rights advocacy group, therefore, called on the Governor Soludo administration to effect a swift change of governance and adopt a more people-friendly approach that will lift up the poor.
