Anambra 21: Njoku, Oye, Soludo, Umeh Compound APGA Crisis

Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, merely broached the dilemma confronting the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), when he claimed that certain forces do not want him to contest the forthcoming gubernatorial poll.

Checks by The Guardian show that unless providence good fortune smiles at the governing party in Anambra State, it might not feature on the ballot on November 6, 2021 when the governorship election holds.

It was gathered that controversies over the last APGA national convention scheduled for Owerri, Imo State, which produced Chief Edozie Njoku, arose after the former chairman, Victor Oye, contrived another hasty convention in Awka, Anambra State.

After several litigations, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), could not act on the judicial pronouncements in favour of Njoku, following appeal from Oye.

While the parties to the leadership tussle continued nursing hope that things would ultimately go their way, the Anambra State governorship election beckons. And, as preparations for the poll continued, the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) strike supervened, thereby delaying court processes.

The Federal High Court, Abuja is billed to deliver judgment on the contentious issue of who is the authentic national chairman of the party. INEC has always maintained that it would not interfere in party’s affairs, especially in the middle of litigations.

It is, however, not clear whether INEC anticipated the peculiar nature of the current wrangling within APGA, where midway into the process of electing new helmsmen for the party, the former chairman, Oye, decided for a fresh start.

Not that alone, The Guardian gathered that a former governorship candidate of Nigeria Advanced Party (NAP), Mr. Ifeanyi Okonkwo, filed a motion in court seeking to quash the publication of INEC guidelines for the Anambra governorship poll.

INEC Commissioner, Festus Okoye, told The Guardian that he was not in a position to comment of the status of litigations against the commission, stressing that, “sometimes, court papers are served on the commission in the headquarters, sometimes through the state offices.”

Okoye noted that when INEC is served through the state offices of the commission, “it may take us a day or two to be aware of it and it goes directly to the director of legal services then to the chairman before it comes to the commission. I cannot confirm as at today whether there is a litigation relating to Anambra gubernatorial poll or not.”

But speaking on his suit, Okonkwo said INEC was served at the headquarters after the commission frowned against service of writs at state offices. He regretted that but for the JUSUN strike, the matter ‘Obi versus INEC’ would have been heard on April 28, 2021.

On the APGA crisis, the INEC commissioner disclosed that commission has its own processes and proceedings, adding that, “ordinarily, before there is a change of leadership in any of the political parties, the commission must be invited to come and monitor either the congress or convention.

“The moment new officers are elected, their names and signatures are filled with INEC. And so, unless we resume work on Monday, I will not be in a position to give you a clear position on the name of the person who is on the file as the chairman of the party.”

Okoye expressed the hope that when APGA holds its governorship primary, “it is the chairman and secretary recognised by the commission that we are going to give the access code to and they are the ones to file the names and particulars of the nominated candidates.”

As things stand, nobody knows when the JUSUN strike would be called off, especially given that after one month of the standoff, ego has crept in and it does not seem that any of the feuding parties is prepared to blink first.

While the situation remains dicey, APGA National Working Committee (NWC) led by Njoku held a meeting at Sheraton Hotel, Abuja with a view to plugging all loopholes to ensure that it features on the ballot contrary to the machinations of the party’s detractors.

Although Oye and his group did not attend the NWC meeting, it released statement through Sly Ezeokenwa, distancing itself from the Njoku led executive.

After the NWC meeting, it was obvious that the APGA leadership under Njoku was determined to make hay while it was still day. The NWC said it met as part of its statutory duties and in fulfillment of the party’s internal workings and to strengthen APGA’s internal democracy.

The party said it set up a six-member communiqué drafting committee comprising, Alhaji A.D Musa, (Deputy National Chairman North) as chairman, Okoro Chinedum Benedict (Secretary), Barrister Hamman Buba, (Legal Adviser), Hon. Ezekwelu Chukwudi Tony (National Vice Chairman Southeast), Hon. Freedom Henry Okwuchukwu (National Organizing Secretary) and Camaru Lateef Ogidan (National Vice Chairman Southwest) as members.

The part said it reexamined, reassessed and reevaluated the party’s ideology, focus and political capital and the state of the party and resolved that harmonising the various interests of stakeholders will ensure APGA’s victory in the November 6 Anambra governorship election.

“To achieve this, the NWC proposed the constitution of a 5 man Committee and to ensure that the forthcoming APGA governorship primaries on June 25, 2021 is seen as free, fair and credible,” the NWC resolved.

Other resolutions reached at the NWC include the decision to consider the proposal for extension of sale of expression of interest and nomination forms for the governorship. “This,” the party stated, “is to accommodate requests from party members that have shown interest to purchase the forms from the Njoku leadership.

“The NWC looked at various applications from new entrants into the party that whish to contest the election. As the NWC, we feel that politics being a group activity, people should be given a level play ground to prove their mettle and bring new vibes into our great party.”

The NWC further resolved that although the Anambra governorship election remains at the front burner, its preoccupation is to reposition APGA for greater potentials in 2023.

But peeved by the huge mileage and goodwill being garnered by Njoku, Oye, through the party’s Legal Adviser, Ezeokenwa, said APGA remains indivisible under him.

In a statement, Ezeokenwa lamented that conclusions drawn by APGA Eminent Group, were meant to cast aspersion on Oye’s leadership, lamenting that the action of the group must be the latest in a series of attacks against APGA by Chief Edozie Njoku.

Recalling how Njoku also featured in a phone in programme of African Independent Television (AIT), Ezeokenwa regretted that the station granted Njoku “a cameo appearance, where he made a barrage of mischievous claims, ostensibly in a bid to accentuate his claim to the exalted position of the National Chairman of APGA.”

Ezeokenwa said one of the most hideous claims by Njoku was that he is a founding member of APGA, alleging that Njoku is not a member of APGA and cannot claim any right, benefit or position in APGA. While contending that APGA constitution does not guarantee or enthrone perpetual membership, Ezeokenwa said Chief Njoku has been in and out of the party in a number of occasions.

Ezeokenwa stated: “It is a known fact and as decided by various courts that it is only a political party that knows and determines, who its members are. Thus, the claim of being a foundation member of APGA by Chief Edozie Njoku stands logic on its head.

READ ALSO Why African countries are closing their borders
“Several foundation members of APGA have left the party to seek political fortunes elsewhere. Indeed, no less a person than the pioneer National Chairman of APGA has left the party. What makes Chief Njoku’s case different?”

The Legal Adviser disclosed that only the national chairman of a party could appoint members of the Convention Planning Committee, but failed to controvert Njoku’s claim that the Oye did not reserve the right to disrupt the process midway to serve his narrow purpose.

Again, going by the allegation that the use of party delegates to run a fresh convention after their tenure expired rendered the convention null and void, shows that the courts have issues to settle for APGA.

Yet, while Njoku and Oye are wrestling over the last APGA convention, attempts by some stakeholders to choose Soludo as consensus candidate is causing furor in the party.

Erstwhile national chairman of the party, Sir Victor Umeh, had, in a news interview described Soludo as the only aspirant that could win the governorship for APGA.

But, no sooner had Umeh made the assertions than other aspirants, including Hon. Chukwuma Umeoji and Nze Akachukwu Nwankpo, cried foul, alleging that Umeh wanted to atone for his clever tricks against the former CBN governor in 2013.

Ever since he announced his interest to contest the APGA ticket, Umeoji was seen as a ‘lion killer,’ even as some stakeholders accuse him of being sponsored to spoil the chances of the former CBN governor. Despite insinuations and innuendos, Umeoji has continued to wave his grassroots appeal, which gifted him a second term at the House of Representatives.

While Soludo hails from Isuofia, Umeoji is from Ezinifite in the same Aguata Local Council of the state. Despite the fact of their Aguata roots, which some stakeholders tried to use to blackmail him out of the race, Umeoji declared that only APGA delegates should select the party’s standard bearer and not self-serving expired wannabe political godfathers.

Whether APGA would pick its candidate through consensus or harmonisation, the crucial huddle for the party featuring in the November 6, poll could be the outcome of the Njoku versus Oye contention in court.

Breaking:Miyetti Allah asks Fulani herders to leave Southern states

The Bauchi State Chapter of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), has urged its members to vacate the 17 southern states, where governors have decided to ban open grazing.

MACBAN Chairman, Sadiq Ibrahim Ahmed, said: “This is a simple calculation. We are heading for secession. The rulers are no longer interested in the people. If some people are banned from open grazing, there is nothing more. Fulani people should move out from there. It is very simple.

“Must we transport the cattle there? I have said it before. We have an option of breeding our cattle here (North). We are peace lovers. Let them come and buy from us. It is some people’s fault.

“Criminality started in the South. Armed robbery, kidnapping. all started in the South. We have been watching these on television. And if these are being transited to the North, and you know we have a government that is not protecting the Constitution of the nation. Everyone takes laws into his hands.

“The Southern governors can do that. There is no problem, let them do what they want. If the Northern governors feel like, they can also do it too (banning open grazing)…”
Sadiq charged southern governors to face criminal groups in the South and leave Fulani herders alone.

He said: “The President is there as a figurehead. He doesn’t know what he’s doing. He is not controlling anybody. In our country now, everyone does what he feels like. The country is already moving apart. Where is the central government, if some governors can meet and take decisions that are against the Constitution…?”

Sadiq said the solution to Nigeria’s security challenge is for the “President to step aside or for Nigerians to put heads together and elect a credible president in 2023, a leader with focus and competence. Nigeria should get a leader with a good example, who is ready to sacrifice his life for his subjects.”

I gave IPOB agitators N500 million to remain calm – Okorocha

The former governor of Imo State and serving Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Rochas Okorocha, has aired his views on the goings-on in Nigeria.

The Senator who was interviewed live on Channels TV’s program, “Sunday Politics”, had a lot of questions thrown at him by the host, Seun Okinbaloye.

The former governor said that during his time as governor, IPOB was very popular and that from what he saw the last time that the group came to Imo State for demonstration, the members of the IPOB group are “our sons and daughter and not foreigners”.

Rochas went on to say that IPOB members are Keke drivers, mechanics, traders; people who believe that things are not going well in the country.

The former governor referred to when there were serious security issues in Uguta and Ohaji/Egbema of Imo State, saying that he had to engage the IPOB agitators there, and was able to get most of them to turn in their weapons and uniforms and in return, he engaged them in Imo Security Network and was paying them N15,000 – N20,000 every month.

According to the former governor, he went further to give the youths of Uguta and Ohaji/Egbema who were operating under the umbrella of IPOB agitation the sum of N250,000,000 on two occasions, making it a total of N500,000,000 which led to the restoration of calmness in the whole area and Imo State at large.

Following the success achieved in restoring peace in Imo State, Senator Rochas said that Imo State witnessed a lot of real estate investment, as well as other business investments.

Reacting to the allegations being laid against him that some of the properties that he currently has were acquired using state funds when he was the governor of Imo State, Senator Rochas challenged anybody who can prove that he acquired any property with any government fund, to kindly come forward with such evidence.

In the words of the former governor, “people have forgotten that I was Rochas before becoming the governor of Imo State”. He added that becoming the governor of Imo State made him poorer and not richer.

Senator Rochas rounded up by saying that he has the vision to be the president of Nigeria and that if he is going to declare, it would be before the entire people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Igbo Groups Back Southern Governors on Ban Of Open Grazing, others

Members of the House of Representatives from the 17 southern states have lauded the Southern Governors Forum for calling for a restructuring of the polity, banning of open grazing and demand for true federalism in the country.

The southern lawmakers, in a statement by the minority leader, Ndudi Elumelu and 22 others, yesterday, promised to deploy all legislative instruments at their disposal, to actualise the resolutions of the governors at their meeting in Asaba, on Tuesday.

“The members of the House of Representatives from the South, without regard to any other affiliations, firmly support our governors on the immediate ban on open cattle grazing across the Southern Nigeria. We hold that such is a sure step towards checking the infiltration of bandits, armed herders and terrorist elements which has heightened security challenges with escalated killings and bloody attacks on innocent citizens, while crippling social life, economic activities and food production in the region.

“We therefore support the recommendation that the Federal Government should provide alternative and modern livestock management that does not constitute a security and economic challenge to the nation.

“We also support our governors restatement of the demand for true federalism through restructuring that will lead to the devolution of power, creation of state police, review of resource control and revenue allocation formula, as well as strict adherence to federal character principle in federal appointments in the shared interests of the federating states.

“We firmly back the demand for the establishment and activation of other ports in other states of the federation, particularly in the south where such services are in very high demand.”

Also, Alaigbo Development Foundation (ADF) and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), yesterday, backed the decision of the southern governors banning open grazing in the area.

They described the move as courageous and strategic, urging them to ensure that they back it up with the necessary legislation; which is the most potent strategy to prevent the monstrous and murderous Fulani herdsmen from overrunning their states.

ADF said: “The law to be passed in the Houses of Assembly should be accompanied by clear modalities, instrumentalities and machineries for their enforcement. The effectiveness of this move depends on the synergy between the governors, the legislators and the people including the civil society organisations.”

ADF also drew the attention of the southern governors and legislators to the obvious fact that their fate in the current struggle for survival is intricately interwoven with the fate of their fellow compatriots in the Middle Belt and Southern Kaduna.

MASSOB on its part, encouraged the southern governors and other leaders to sustain the southern unity and brace up for the defense of their indigenous people. Leader of the group, Uchenna Madu, noted that their decision had rattled the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and, therefore, urged them not to relent in their ban on open grazing and call for national dialogue.

MASSOB assured the southern governors that Southeast and the people were solidly behind the latest moves of salvaging their people from the marauding Fulani-terrorist herdsmen being brought in from some West African countries to carry out Islamisation agenda.

Terrorists Have Invade South-West Ready to Attack RCCG, Winners- AKintoye

A Second Republic Senator and a renowned Historian, Prof. Banji Akintoye, has alerted governors in the South-West that the entire region has already been surrounded by terrorists.

Akintoye, who is the leader of Ilana Omo Oodua, the umbrella body for Yoruba self-determination groups, informed the governors in a letter written to them that the terrorists were ready to strike any moment from now.

This was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by his media aide, Mr Maxwell Adeleye.

He urged the government to begin to make moves to scuttle the planned attacks by the criminals, adding that the hoodlums had perfected plans to attack important places in order to wreck the economy of the region.

Akintoye in the statement also advised the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye; Bishop David Oyedepo of Winners’ Chapel; and other church and Islamic leaders to protect their churches and mosques from being attacked.

He also called on Yoruba youths to be more vigilant and prevent the influx of terrorists into the region.Akinyoye said, “A combination of Fulani terrorists, Boko Haram and ISIS, have occupied Niger State, which is immediately north of Yorubaland, thereby providing for themselves very easy access into Yorubaland through the Yoruba parts of Kwara and Kogi states.

Then recently, the US issued a statement that ISIS had infiltrated Southern Nigeria from the sea, meaning that the coast of Lagos, Ogun and Ondo states have been infiltrated.

“Our situation has thus become desperate and requires desperate actions from our state governors. I feel obliged to devote much attention to the study of our Yoruba nation’s vicissitudes in these terrible times and from such studies, I am hereby raising an informed alarm to the governors of our states.

“I humbly and passionately urge our governors to come together to give the needed response to the danger that threatens to engulf Yorubaland in, most probably, the next few days.

“It is very well known that the signature action of these foreign terrorist organisations is to first destroy prominent assets of the society that they attack. That could mean that major public and private buildings in Lagos and Ibadan, particularly the hugely symbolic Cocoa House in Ibadan, would be their immediate targets.

“Owners and custodians of significant edifices in Yorubaland are strongly advised to establish formidable security for their edifices. These include bridges, important public and private buildings,  churches and such eminent church estates as the Redeemed, Winners, Deeper Life, Mountain of Fire Church camps and the unique Synagogue building of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, and even our most prestigious central mosque buildings in Lagos, Ibadan and our other cities.”

Biafra: Nigerian Army Arrests Another Top IPOB Commander

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest of another top commander of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The IPOB personnel, identified as Awurum Eze is the second in command to the late IPOB/ESN militant leader Ikonso Don.

He was arrested by security operatives in Aba, Abia State, Naija News understands according to a statement on Wednesday by the spokesman for the Nigerian Army, Mohammed Yerima.

He is understood to be the only one apart from the late Ikonso who has a direct line of communication with IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

“The 48-year old, a native of Umoneke Nta, Isiala-Mbano LGA, Imo State, had on the 4th of May 2021 escaped when operatives of Intelligence Response Team, IRT, stormed his village house in Isiala Mbano where he was hiding.”

“Intensive manhunt was thereafter launched towards tracing and arresting him. He was eventually apprehended on Wednesday, 12 May 2021, in Aba after weeks of unrelenting follow-ups by operatives.”

“Mr Eze is one of the main sponsors of the numerous killings in Imo State and has been on the wanted list of security agents for more than 3 months.”

“Many of the arrested IPOB /ESN terrorists had earlier mentioned him as their key sponsor, mastermind and Second in Command to late Ikonso.”

“According to them, amongst all their leaders in Imo State, only Ikonso and Awurum have direct communication link with Nnamdi Kanu.”

“He can be seen in several photographs posing with the fugitive terrorist leader, Nnamdi Kanu.”

“Investigation by the combined team of security operatives continues.” Yerima said in a statement on Wednesday.

Federal Govt know Where Kidnappers Are Staying- Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has assured Nigerians that the Federal Government is handling the problem of insecurity in the country.

He said the insinuation in some quarters that the government was clueless was unfounded, adding that the result of government’s efforts would soon be evident.

A statement said the minister spoke on Tuesday during a press briefing in Lagos.

He said, “It is no longer news that our dear nation is facing security challenges. However, I have read comments saying the Federal Government is overwhelmed and doesn’t have a clue as to how to tackle the challenges. Some have even gone as far as suggesting a truncation of the democratic order, a clearly treasonable stance.

“Well, I am here today to assure all Nigerians that while the government acknowledges the security challenges we face at this time, from terrorism to kidnapping, banditry and farmer-herder conflict, it is definitely not overwhelmed and indeed it has the wherewithal, as you will see in the days ahead, to confront the challenges headlong and restore law and order, peace and security.

Mohammed explained that the government indeed knew the locations of kidnappers, adding that security agencies were only being careful to avoid civilian casualties.

One of the most difficult things to do, for a democratically-elected government, is to use the instruments of coercion against its own people. For example, while the nation’s military have superior firepower over the rag tag band of Boko Haram and ISWA, the terrorists most often than not operate among the populace, either in our villages or towns, hence the military, in tackling them, is usually careful to avoid collateral damage.

“The same applies to the kidnappers who abduct our school children. Usually, the location of the kidnappers is not unknown to security forces, but they still have to exercise caution in order not to hurt the same children they are trying to rescue. Despite these inhibitions, the security forces have the wherewithal to decisively tackle the challenges,” he added.

He lamented the attacks on security agencies in some parts of the country, saying they were a declaration of war.

Nigerians over-tolerance of Depots why Buhari Still in Office- Adebanjo

Ayo Adebanjo, leader of Afenifere, a Yoruba social-cultural group, says President Muhammadu Buhari will not be in office if Nigerians are not “over-tolerance of despots”.

THISDAY reports that Adebanjo spoke on Tuesday during the 95th birthday celebration of Reuben Fasoranti, former leader of the group.

Noting the spate of insecurity in the country, Adebanjo said the Buhari administration has failed Nigerians.

“I have told them that in a better and civilised country, he should have gone long ago. If he has self-respect, he should have gone because everything has to fall,” Adebanjo said.

“What is he presiding over? Is it over corruption, security, education? Law and order have broken down in the country for the past three years. It is only because Nigerians are over-tolerance of despots; that is why he is still there.”

The Afenifere leader said the youths have also failed the country, adding that they “should be ashamed of themselves”.

“The younger generation has failed the country. The country was not as bad as this when we were demonstrating for self-governance,” he said.

“They want the old men to fight their cause for them. Why should people like me be in the trenches at 93 and Baba Fasoranti at 95? Where are those in their 40s and 30s?

“When we were at their age, we were in the streets, at Lagos, London, everywhere.

“You are PDP in the morning, APC in the afternoon and SDP in the evening, and they say they are young; the youth should be ashamed of themselves.”
