CBN Governor: Possible Successor Of Emefiele

By
bvichannel1
-
March 5, 2019

As the end of the tenure of the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, approaches, speculations are rife that a top woman banker, Aishah Ahmad, one of his deputies, and any among eight others may be his likely successor as he will most likely not be re-appointed.

BVI Channel 1 Online  reports that other eminent Nigerians being touted for the job include Professor Soji Adelaja, Mohammed Dikwa, Bismarck Rewane, Umaru Abdul Mutallab, Obadiah Mailafia, Bello Maccido, Adesola Adeduntan and Herbert Wigwe

Rumours were rife on Monday that President Muhammadu Buhari has sacked Emefiele, but the news has since been rebuffed as fake by the CBN.

What makes the position of an apex bank governor colossal is its direct implication on the economy as the holder is expected to advise the president on both fiscal and monetary policies from time to time.

Aside from this, the CBN Act, 2007, states that the Governor is expected to formulate, for the approval of the Board, general rules and any subsequent amendments thereto, providing for:

•The safekeeping of the common seal of the bank

•The safekeeping of the assets of the bank and of valuables entrusted to the bank

•The safekeeping of stocks of unissued or redeemed currency and the preparation, safe custody and destruction of plates and paper for the printing of currency notes and disc for the minting of coins

•The protection of banknotes and coins in transit

•The conditions under which any Zonal Controller, Branch Controller or Currency Officer may be appointed; and

•The conditions governing discounts and advances

•The exercise of dual control and general security throughout the bank; and

•Such additional arrangement which may be made to ensure the efficient working of the bank, through proper observance of security and the accuracy of the accounts of the bank.

As a result of these, an online platform, North East Star, is of the opinion that professional background, regional consideration and international exposure come to play in determining who becomes the CBN governor.

“Given the extreme market reactions to changes on who heads the central bank in some emerging markets, the professional background of the central bank governor must suggest that he or she has the experience to devise and run an effective monetary policy for the country.

“And going by the federal character provisions in any federal appointment in Nigeria. A critical look at the table shows that all the past CBN governors and their tenure suggest that regional consideration plays an active role in the appointment of the central bank governor. One thing is apparent: the position has a tradition of alternating between the north and the south (Prof. Charles Soludo from the South, then Sanusi L. Sanusi from the north, then Emefiele from the south).

“Again, President Buhari and his government will like to see someone with international exposure and expertise as the next CBN head. The next CBN governor will be someone who knows how the Breton Woods institutions operate, who has some training from Harvard or Cambridge, someone whom the international financial world can respect,” it adds.

In its February 15 edition, an online medium, www.newsonbanks.com, states that President Buhari was considering Mrs Ahmad as the substantive governor when Emefiele’s term expires.

The news outlet, quoting ‘a highly dependable source from the presidency’ states that “it is not yet clear if there are strong economic reasons for this, considering Emefiele’s sterling performance in stabilising the Naira in the winds of the economic turbulence, hellish recession and sluggish recovery that have plagued President Buhari’s years in office.”

Aishah Ahmad, 42, is the youngest member of the CBN Board and oversees the Financial Systems Stability Directorate of the apex bank. She replaced Dr Sarah Alade who retired in March 2017. If the 9th Senate approves her nomination, she will be the youngest and the first female CBN Governor in Nigeria and the first female to hold the position in Africa.

However, aside Mrs Ahmad, in-depth research and investigation conducted by North East Star reveal that eight others are currently being considered for the job. These include Professor Soji Adelaja,an economist and John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University (MSU), USA; Mohammed Kyari Dikwa, a holder of PhD in Accounting and Finance, whose success in coordinating the TSA and the blockage of billions for the government through PICA was said to have endeared him to the President; Bismarck Rewane, a financial analyst and the Managing Director of Financial Derivatives Company; Umaru Abdul Mutallab, former CEO of UBA and ex-Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria and Obadiah Mailafia, a former CBN deputy governor in charge of monetary policy, foreign exchange operations, investment management, research, statistics, and cooperation with international institutions. The rest are Bello Maccido, the Chairman of FBN Merchant Bank; Adesola Adeduntan, Managing Director/CEO, First Bank of Nigeria Limited and Herbert Wigwe, Group Managing Director/CEO, Access Bank Plc

Buhari writes US, EU to stop Atiku from going to court

Buhari writes US, EU to stop Atiku from going to court, advises him to imitate Jonathan and concede defeat
In a bizarre letters sent to the United State, the European Union and the African Union, President Muhammadu Buhari has asked the international community to stop Atiku from going to court even as he advised former Vice President and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to imitate former president Goodluck Jonathan and concede defeat.
Buhari spoke through his campaign organization, the Buhari Campaign Organisation (BCO).
Daily Mail obtained the press statement signed by BCO’s Director of Communications and Strategic Planning, Malam Gidado Ibrahim, in which  Buhari wrote to the US, European Union and the African Union urging the international communities to also prevail on Atiku not to go to court.
The group insisted that the election was free and fair and accused Atiku of trying to drag the Nigeria’s electoral system back by going to court.
In the separate letters addressed to the EU and the AU the group said President Buhari has been fair enough by asking supporters not to mock oppositions after he was declared winner of the poll.
The Buhari Organization said, “We are writing to inform you of the undemocratic tendencies of the presidential candidate of the main opposition party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, who has chosen to take the electoral process in Nigeria backward after a peaceful and credible presidential and National Assembly elections conducted penultimate Saturday.
“Atiku should follow former President Goodluck Jonathan’s example. Nobody’s life should be sacrificed for any politician’s ambition.”
This is coming on the heels of the inauguration of Atiku’s legal team to begin the judicial process to take back what he called his mandate, the mandate of the people he said.

Earlier, members of the Peace Committee headed by former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar had paid a courtesy visit to the former Vice President and later to Buhari.
But details of the meeting was sketchy, it however emerged that Atiku had given the committee certain conditions to take to Buhari.
Daily Mail could not confirm if the conditions were indeed delivered and what such were and if the work of the Peace Committee has hit the rock.
But a source inside the Committee expressed dismay at the election that produced Buhari even as he noted that the election has not been concluded as the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is still carrying out supplementary elections in some areas due to violence.
He noted that the Committee had one voice in its internal condemnation of the election noting preventative mechanisms used by the State to suppress opposition stronghold and inflation of imaginary voting figures in the ruling party considered its areas of strength due to excuse of insecurity.
Also, Human Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana faulted INEC noting it was always going to be difficult for Atiku to win in such circumstances as a result of the disposition of the electoral body.

Rochas Okorocha: I Have Sacked Adams Oshiomhole

March 4, 2019

Governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha has stated that  he has sacked  chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole for anti-party activities.

Reacting to his suspension from the ruling party by the national working committee (NWC) of the party led by Oshiomhole, Okorocha said the chairman lacked the power to suspend him.

He said as a founder of the APC, he could say authoritatively that Oshiohmole was involved in anti-party activities.

Comrade Adams Oshiomole

He spoke on Sunday Politics, a program on Channels Television.

“I just heard from media reports that I have been suspended from the party (APC). I think Adams is seeking for relevance and attention,” he said.

“He doesn’t have such powers to remove somebody without following due process. I think Adams is the biggest player of anti-party in APC. The man has simply destroyed the party to a great extent.

“So, I have sacked him from the party. If he thinks he can just stand up and say he has suspended me from the party I founded, without following the due process, in the same manner, I have sacked him from the party.”

Press Statement -OurMumuDondo Movement-

The OurMumuDonDo congratulates Nigerians on their determination to express their democratic rights to elect their leaders. Although the Nigerian state put every possible obstacle to frustrate these gallant Champions of democracy, they continued to be resilient.

We also salute such patriots like Deji Adeyanju and others who suffered grievous violations of their fundamental rights in order to secure our human rights. The INEC has declared President Muhammadu Buhari as re-elected in spite of several flaws and irregularities reported by credible election monitors and observers and acknowledged by INEC itself.

We want to call on Nigerians to remember that the formalities of elections do not guarantee good governance. We have to be vigilant to ensure that we don’t slip further down into more poverty and miseries as we celebrate the triumph of politics of money and manipulation. OurMumuDonDo as a non-partisan and youth-focused Organisation calls on all Nigerian youths to continue to press on towards freedom and prosperity. We have to raise the banner of citizen-contact as the framework for a government that will receive our support.

As President Buhari prepares to form a new government, we want to hope that he will start by obeying court orders and releasing political prisoners including ElZakzaky and Sambo Dasuki who the courts have ordered to be released on bail. President Buhari should show good faith by instructing his security chiefs, including the Inspector General of Police and the Director of Security Services to comply with the rule of law and desist from harassing activists.

We are very sad that the NIGERIAN state continues to kill innocent NIGERIAN citizens even when they are carrying out their civic duties. The violence in Okota, Lagos; Sabon Gari, Kano; Rivers and Bayelsa States should be thoroughly investigated and  those responsible duly punished. We will lead a movement to audit all electoral violence and ensure punishment for those responsible for the deaths of Nigerians.

To all NIGERIAN citizens, we remind you that it is not yet freedom day. Our struggle for freedom, justice and prosperity for all Nigerians begin today.

March 1, 2019
Dear fellow frustrated Nigerian,

The recent happenings in Nigeria, both before, during and after last Saturday’s presidential and national assembly elections are no news anymore. They are our recent realities and we’re all very much abreast of them.

Well, throughout history, whenever injustice became Law, concerted resistance became a duty. Injustice can only rule forever when the oppressed keep quiet like “sheep being led to the slaughter”.

I still believe in Nigeria’s exceptional few, the youths in whose hands lie the salvation of this country. I will always be by your side to ginger and cheer you up and show you all how to step into your greatness. I may not be a witness to this New Nigeria, it may not happen in my life time, but I know the process has already begun. It is a movement of the people.

My fear is not death. It’s not the bullet that may silence me, because we were all born to die. In fact, I no send. My real fear is the inability of the suffering docile Nigerians to wake up from their slumber and fight for their rights, their future. Until we come to our senses, we are not going anywhere as a nation.

Therefore, please consider this my humble invitation to you to join our community on Facebook and participate in the conversation for delivering a better Nigeria in the nearest future. Join here

Indeed, for most Nigerians, this should be the saddest time in our history, but I know that it is always darkest before dawn. Lend your voice to the collective quest for good governance in Nigeria and invite your friends to join too.

I dey wait for you…

Buhari Declaration Invalid Before The Law-Prof Nwabueze

By

March 1, 2019

Professor Ben Nwabueze has questioned the legality of the declaration of President Muhammadu Buhari, candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, as winner of the 2019 presidential election in Nigeria by the Chairman of the Independent National Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

Professor Nwabueze noted that the INEC relied on partial fulfillment of the constitution in the declaration of Buhari as winner of the presidential election, noting that INEC Chairman, Yakubu, showed biases and partiality in favour of Buhari and the APC in making the decision. He counseled the INEC to take necessary action to review that decision.

“I think the declaration and certification are invalid in law. Do the declaration and certification not manifest undue bias and partiality for Buhari on the part of INEC Chairman as well as an anxious desire for the President’s victory?

“Please consider and take action as you may consider necessary and appropriate,” Professor Nwabueze declared.

The Professor had made reference to the appearance of the Chairman of INEC on the television Wednesday morning to declare and certify Buhari as winner of the 2019 Presidential election based SOLELY on the fact that he scored the “highest” number of votes cast at the election. Professor Nwabueze asked, “did the declaration and certification comply with section 134(2) of the Constitution which provides as follows:

“a candidate for an election to the office of the President shall be deemed to have been duly elected where, there being more than two candidates for the election –

(a)  he has the highest number of votes cast at the election, and

(b) he has not less than one-quarter of the votes cast at the election in each of at least two-thirds of all the states in the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.”

He protested that the INEC Chairman’s declaration and certification were based solely on section 134(2)(a)), and said nothing at all on whether sub-section 2(b) has been complied with.

“I am concerned with the validity of the declaration and certification as a legal requirement, not with the question whether sub-section 2(b) has in fact been complied with,” Nwabueze stated inter alia.

The Struggle Continues – Prof Kingsley Moghalu

By
Queen Madu
-
March 1, 2019

Prof Kingsley Moghalu of YPP is most favored by the majority of Nigerians to win the last Presidential election. His message is revolutionary and tends to provide solution to the Nigeria economic and political challenges.Sadly ,elections in Nigeria are won by powerful few who control public institutions like Security Agencies,INEC etc.

In a statement released to the public today,Prof Moghalu restated his resolve to retire the old recycled politicians from the face of Nigeria political scene. The statement reads  in full ” I was very saddened by the loss of lives to various acts of violence during the February 23 Presidential election and elections into the National Assembly. My heartfelt condolences go to the families that lost loved ones and I pray that those injured will recover soonest.

The operational failures of INEC in the conduct of the elections, the massive vote-buying and vote-rigging through various methods as well as violence in several locations in the country have left the credibility of the election open to question. The APC and the PDP have both been complicit in the malpractices. The number of votes tallied for my candidacy by the INEC did not represent anything close to the electoral strength of that candidacy. These false numbers were the result of brazen theft of our votes and the suppression of our voters. It appears, however, that the strong determination of many of our citizens to reject the APC at the ballot box far outweighed the desire for real change in our polity and governance in 2019.

So, although we did not win this election in terms of overall numbers of votes, the presidential election result is an indication of where our society is at present: 2019 is the last gasp of the old political order that has robbed Nigeria of real development. I trust and believe that this situation will change by 2023. As we move forward as a country, we need fundamental reform of our electoral system if our democracy is to have any real meaning. Elections as they are organized and executed today in Nigeria are a travesty. We need to reform the systems of registration, voting and collation of votes by making the processes more transparent through better use of technology. As of today, these processes are tedious, inefficient and prone to risks and performance failures such as those we have experienced. We also must stiffen punishment and enforce accountability for electoral offenses. Nigerians in Diaspora have continued to remit billions of dollars home every year. Our fellow citizens living abroad must be able to vote overseas as from 2023. Immediate action to achieve this goal is required once the present elections are over. President Muhammadu Buhari, who INEC announced as the winner of the 2019 presidential election, owes Nigerians an inclusive, competent government that can heal our land and take millions of Nigerians out of crushing poverty.

This calls for a very different approach from recycling poverty through the APC government’s unsustainable populist initiatives that fail to create jobs or improve actual economic productivity and living standards. A new, philosophically and conceptually grounded approach to economic management that goes beyond mere economic growth statistics to real economic development and structural transformation remains an urgent priority for our country. Our struggle for a better and well governed society, a productive and inclusive economy that breaks the backbone of poverty, and to restore Nigeria’s leadership role in the world continues.

I for my part will remain engaged in that struggle over the long haul. Signed Kingsley Moghalu YPP Presidential Candidate in the 2019 Elections” The Statement Concluded.
