Lagos crisis: Afenifere condemns attack on Igbo

Pan Yoruba organisation, Afenifere, has condemned last Saturday’s attack on voters in Ago Palace way, Lagos, while voting in the presidential and National Assembly election was ongoing.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Yinka Odumakin, the organisation described the violence unleashed on voters and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at Ago Palace Way and other areas dominated by the Igbo as babaric and unfortunate.

During Saturday’s presidential election, thugs suspected to be members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Oouda People’s Congress (OPC) were seen in company with one of the leaders of the National Union of Road Transport Workers(NURTW) disrupting the voting process, snatching ballot boxes and burning ballot papers in full view of voters.

As early as 9am on Saturday morning, there was massive voter turnout in Ago, Amuwo Odofin, Festac, Oke-Afa and its environs. But between 10am and 11am, thugs begun arriving and from one polling unit to the other, burning ballot papers and ordering voters, most of whom were of Igbo extraction to leave the polling units or face deportation.

Reacting to the crisis, Afenifere, appealed for calm, while accusing those it described as political merchants for being responsible for the violence that broke out.

“We condemn in the strongest terms, the political violence visited on Nigerians of Igbo extraction in Lagos during Saturday’s presidential elections. Dirty political merchants and their band of thugs apart from engineering political disenfranchisement of the Igbo, went ahead to visit violence on them and burning their votes en masse.

“The political vandals they used were said to have been calling themselves OPC but our checks with the genuine leaders of the group have shown that the deranged elements had no affiliation with the OPC known by Afenifere.

“We frown seriously at the failure of the security agencies to give adequate cover to Ndigbo in the affected communities as these thugs went berserk carrying out the instructions of their sinking political godfathers.

“We want to assure our Igbo brothers and sisters that the bond of friendship the Afenifere and Ohanaeze Ndigbo have built particularly under the dynamic leadership of Chief John Nwodo remains strong and will not be broken by the nefarious activities of a few strange children in our midst.

“We are already in discussions with the Igbo leadership on the matter and we appeal for calm as these political vandals are only engaged in death kicks. We call on the security agencies to give adequate security covers to the Igbo in subsequent elections as we encourage them not to succumb to intimidation and harassment by political vampires.

“Our historical connectivity with Ndigbo will survive the Saturday madness and the perpetrators will be shamed eternally,” Odumakin said.

In a related development, the leadership of the OPC, has denied that one of the thugs named Demola, who was caught burning ballot papers and was beaten by voters but was later rushed to the hospital by Ago residents, is a member of the organisation.

Publicity Secretary of the OPC, Yinka Oguntimehin, said the man killed by the mob yesterday at Okota, Lagos, was not a member of the Aare Gani Adams – led members of the OPC.

Oguntimehin said: “The report at our disposal indicates that a member of the late Faseun’s group was beaten by an irate mob, following an attempt by some thugs to disrupt election process at the Okota area of Lagos state.

“I need to say it clearly that Ademola is not a member of our group. Ours is a group of professionals, and well educated members. We have our structure across the country, and everybody can attest to the fact that the Aare Gani Adams-led members of the OPC are not vagabonds or thugs.”

Moghalu denies teaming up with Atiku, PDP

Prof. Kingsley Moghalu- the presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) has denied reports that he has entered into teamed up with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate- Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Professor Kingsley Moghalu in a statement on Thursday said : “The attention of the Young Progressives Party campaign council and the party’s presidential candidate, Professor Kingsley Moghalu, has been drawn to a statement being circulated on the social media that Moghalu has teamed up with PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. The statement by Jide Akintunde further said: “We would like to state categorically that this information is false. It is fake news, attributed to the CUPP spokesman. This fake news is deliberate disinformation, calculated to mislead and demoralise the millions of Moghalu and YPP supporters across the country. But it is doomed to failure. “We will meet the old brigade of recycled politicians at the polls and we will defeat them with the votes of the people of Nigeria. “Coming on the heels of the fake news narrative that the election is between two parties, Nigerians should disregard the desperation of the political class and vote for YPP as they have resolved to do and send the visionless politicians to permanent retirement on Saturday. “Moghalu remains committed to our vision and his view that the APC and the PDP are unable to take Nigeria forward to a better future.”

Buhari Must Go!!!- Igbo Stakeholders

IGBO stakeholders, comprising of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Alaigbo Development Foundation, Pro-Biafra groups and other Pan-Igbo groups have stated that the concern on Saturday’s presidential election is the attainment of freedom for all ethnic nationalities in Nigeria, particularly the Igbo.

They noted that it was for such reason Ndigbo opted to support the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who they said in his manifesto was the only presidential candidate that met Igbo demand for restructuring of Nigeria.

Rising from an emergency meeting of Igbo stakeholders in Enugu, on Thursday, Ndigbo noted that after exhaustive review of recent events in the Nigerian polity as they relate to the ethnic group in particular, especially in the aftermath of the postponement of the Presidential and National Assembly elections in the country; they agreed that the irreducible minimum for Ndigbo, that will be acceptable for their continued participation in the Nigerian enterprise will be a renegotiated and restructured Nigeria based on equality, equity and justice and for the component regions and individuals who will live under its authority.

They stressed that the renegotiated country must be one that ensures self-determination for the various nationalities, regional autonomy and freedom of the component regions to manage and control their political environment and resources and worship their God without let or hindrance.

“Consequently our demand for the total restructuring of the Nigerian polity as encapsulated in the Ekwueme Square/Awka Declaration by Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide and its ADF-facilitated Enugu affirmation endorsed by many Igbo groups, remain the best framework for a workable Nigerian state and we stand by those declarations at all times. “We note that only one political party, has so far committed to the Restructuring of Nigeria, based on the manifesto released by the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, that meets substantially the demands for a just society where ethnicities, regions and sections of society are allowed to relate as they wish, make progress at their own pace, without interference by the others. “Therefore Ndigbo, reiterate our unequivocal support and endorsement for the Atiku/Obi presidential ticket as already announced by the national leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Alaigbo Development Foundation, (ADF, and other Igbo interest groups like the Association of South-East Town Unions, ASETU, etc)

“That we call on all Igbo registered voters both at home and outside the Igbo homeland to come out enmasse to join all patriotic Nigerians of other ethnic nationalities and vote for the Atiku/Obi ticket. This election is our collective struggle for freedom and we must count it as joy to be part of history.” Among persons who were in the meeting included the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, President of Alaigbo Development foundation, Prof Uzodinma Nwala, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Senator Ben Obi, Bishop Obi Onubuogu, Engr Anthony Aniebue of Customary Government of Biafra,Rita Anigbogu of Movement of Biafra In Nigeria,Uchenna Madu representing the Coalition of Pro Biafra Groups and many other prominent Igbo.

They said they noted with great disappointment the inciting comments by certain persons in authority, which they said directly fuel security concerns about the safety of Ndigbo, both inside and outside Igbo land, both during and after the general elections. “We also note the proliferating presence of able bodied young men of questionable intent, doing no serious business, who have flooded all nooks and crannies of our homeland. Ohanaeze, Afenifere, PANDEF, to Army: Operation Python Dance needless “We urge all town Unions in Igboland to be very vigilante to monitor and control the movement and activities of all persons in their domain and report all untoward activities to the appropriate quarters for analysis and action. “All pan-Igbo organizations and stakeholders including Pro Biafran Groups to work together in the spirit of “onye-aghana-nwanneya” (be your brothers’ keeper) even in the face of existential threat confronting us as a people. “We view with utmost concern the explosive political situation in Nigeria as it appears the country is sliding downhill and this portends greater danger of collective immolation with catastrophic consequences for the country.

“We urge all Ndigbo in their various places of abode in Nigeria and elsewhere to continue to live in orderly and peaceful co-existence with their neighbors in the manner we are well-known as a people but refuse to be intimidated by anybody. “We urge Ndigbo in their places of abode in Nigeria and elsewhere, to continue to live peaceably and go about their civic duties in an orderly and exemplary manner, for which we are well known, but refuse to be intimidated by anybody. “We note with great apprehension, the massive mobilization and deployment of soldiers within all enclaves in Igboland; we also note that there is no constitutional provision for the deployment of soldiers for electioneering purposes and therefore advise that every effort must be made to ensure that these soldiers do not engage in the harassment of the public going about their lawful civic responsibilities.

“We call on all Ndigbo, the International community and election observers to join us in monitoring the activities of these soldiers during this period to ensure that all their activities are strictly in accordance with the Law. “That no one should doubt the resolve of Ndigbo to hold every corporate and individual miscreant personally responsible for any unlawful conducts and pursue such with every resource at our disposal and for however long it will take us, at international levels.

” President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo who read the communiqué disclosed that  a Situation Room has been set up to collate all data and information, graphic and otherwise arising from any misconduct, adding that a special committee of experts have also been set up to sort, analyze and categorize the information collated for actionable responses. “We condemn, in its entirety, the manner in which the elections were postponed by INEC. This has had deleterious impact on our national economy; That we call on the Federal Government to ensure the safety of Ndigbo especially those living in northern Nigeria and other parts of the country; and call to order any public officer that may, through words or actions, be promoting violence.

“Finally, we commend the avowed interest of the international community in having credible elections in Nigeria. As Ndigbo, we invite their direct humanitarian intervention in whatever ways that the need may arise in Nigeria.”

Ignore Unlawful Orders Atiku to Military

Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), yesterday, cautioned soldiers and other security agents against obeying “unlawful orders” from President Muhammadu Buhari.

The leaders, who spoke at the 84th National Executive Committee (NEC)  of the party, were reacting to  President Buhari’s directive to security agencies to deal ruthlessly with anyone found snatching ballot boxes during the rescheduled February 23 presidential and National Assembly elections.

At the opening of  the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Caucus emergency meeting in Abuja on Monday, Buhari had warned that any attempt to snatch ballot box during elections would not be tolerated.

“I am going to warn anybody who thinks he has enough influence in his locality to lead a body of thugs to snatch boxes or to disturb the voting system, he would do it at the expense of his own life,” he warned.

The statement has been greeted with outrage and condemnation.

Former vice president and PDP presidential candidate,  Atiku Abubakar, Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara and the party chairman, Uche Secondus, who spoke separately, said the military and other security agencies were not bound to obey unlawful orders from the president and therefore urged soldiers to ignore the shoot on sight order on ballot box snatchers.

According to Atiku, the statement is a manifestation that Presiden Buhari is not a democrat. According to him, since his assumption of office, he has repeatedly engaged in unconstitutional actions.

“When you people are talking about democracy, I have always said that General Muhammadu Buhari is not a democrat. He has never been a democrat. We started the fight to drive the military, he was never there. He never participated. You can see that he just wore the garb of democracy so that he can come back to power and do whatever he is doing.  So, General  Buhari is not a democrat. He doesn’t believe in democracy, he is more of a power monger than a democrat.

“I am sure that you have followed with interest, utterances from the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, and General Muhammadu Buhari in particular, which is a painful reminder of the era of dictatorship and military rule. General Buhari has consistently violated the constitution; he failed to uphold the rule of law.

“Only yesterday, General Buhari said, ‘the military and police should be ruthless. Anybody who disturbs the voting system will do so at his own risk.’ That is General Buhari.

“It is shocking for any head of state to utter such words in a democracy. We shall not accept it from General Buhari. We have fought more ruthless dictators than himself.”

Atiku claimed the ruling party has equipped many of their members with devices that could slow down or hasten the Smart Card Readers during the presidential poll.

“So, if you are in the South-South, South-East and North-Central, you are likely to get your card readers slowed down by those APC operatives.

“We have seen the machines; we have interviewed some of those who have gone on this training, and we have passed that information to the campaign council to pass to you.

“But if you are from the North-West or North-East, the tendency is that they will use these machines to fast-track the readings of your card readers, so that many of their supporters can vote while disenfranchising the other three zones.”

The PDP candidate said Buhari owed a duty to the electorate to ensure that the presidential poll was free, fair and credible.

“If you do so and you win, the people will commend you, but otherwise, history will condemn you for it. Before history does that, we will condemn you for it,” he said.  Saraki, who is director general of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, said the opposition party was not in support of rigging or ballot box snatching. However, he said the law must be followed in dealing with any form of electoral malpractices.

Saraki noted that Buhari won elections in 2015 because democracy was allowed to work by the previous government. He charged him not to ruin the country’s democracy because of his personal ambition.

Earlier, Secondus, in his opening speech, said being a peaceful and law abiding party, the PDP  would not support snatching of ballot box during elections. Regardless, and urged security agencies to ignore directive to shoot ballot box snatchers, as it is unlawful.

“The agenda of that directive is clear; to scare away voters and agents that we have directed to defend their votes, so as to give way to a military protected political thugs to come into the polling booths and implement their result replacement strategy,” he alleged.

In his reaction, Dogara said: A lot has been said about the military. A lot of them know that unlawful order by the president cannot be obeyed. To kill a ballot snatcher is an unlawful order. I thought he would  have said they would be dealt with in accordance with the law.”
