Force Of Reason & Reason For Force Part 1, 2 & 3 – Prof Chidi A Odinkalu.
Civilized men are easy to conqure, but civilization still belong to the civilized not the baberian, it belongs to whomever is strong enough to take.
Any society without history is a society that is bound to become a vitim of history overtime.
We learn from history to avoid the mistakes of the past, to understand our strenght, and to sustain our core values that makes us unique, which our forebearers treded with.
This is a historical lecture delivered in memory of Biafra legend by Prof. Chidi A. Odinkalu

Saraki labels Osinbajo’s market tours, sophisticated vote buying
Senate President and Director General of the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP, Presidential Campaign Council, Bukola Saraki ,yesterday, faulted Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s ongoing tour of markets in the country saying monies being handed over to traders were not budgeted to be shared to Nigerians by officials of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
He also described the development as “sophisticated vote buying.” The DG said this at an interactive session with newsmen in Abuja. Saraki said it was wrong for the Vice President to be distributing monies belonging to Nigerians, accompanied by leaders of the ruling party. He said: “In 2015, I didn’t see the Vice President going anywhere to give anybody Trader Moni. In 2016, I didn’t see the Vice President going anywhere to give anybody Trader Moni. In 2017, I didn’t see the Vice President going anywhere to give anybody Trader Moni. But all of a sudden in 2018, we are seeing this. “He goes about with the Woman Leader of his party, APC, and governors of his party.
At least, if you are going, you should have Woman Leader of all the parties because the money belongs to Nigeria. But all I see is APC Women Leaders. It is wrong, it is morally wrong. It equates in a way to sophisticated vote buying. If it is not vote-buying he should have been doing it since 2015. In 2016, he didn’t do it. In 2017, he didn’t do it. Suddenly in 2018, that is the biggest programme. “And next time he goes out, he should carry people that represent the community, not just one party or political association.
It’s either they stop it completely or they expand the space to ensure that it represents all Nigerians. “Because the money when it was appropriated, we said it is money appropriated for all Nigerians. “What we will be saying to Nigerians is that it is our belief that, with our candidate, we have a leader who understands what is required in moving the economy forward.
Is the economy better now and is it worse than it was in 2015? Are people suffering more now than they were in 2015? “The reality is this. We need a candidate that can drive investments and bring the factories back working, bring the business economy working again. “Government alone cannot do it and the government has tried to do it in the last few years and it has not worked and unless you have a President that people believe in the investment climate will not be conducive. “We need somebody that will unite the country.
we believe that Atiku has shown he is a Nigerian. Every part of the country will feel that he will represent them. Responding to a statement by the APC warning against issuing an entry visa to Atiku, Saraki described same as an indication that the ruling party is panicking ahead of the poll.

Former US President George Bush is Dead
George H.W. Bush was the definition of establishment success: Yale graduate. Prosperous business career. Forty-first president of the United States.
But to one admittedly biased observer, the elder Bush has always been shortchanged.
“As a result of him being a one-term president, historians hadn’t paid much attention to him,” George W. Bush told NPR in a 2014 interview. He called his father “one of the greatest one-term presidents in the nation’s history.”
George Herbert Walker Bush died Friday at the age of 94.
George W. Bush released a statement, saying for himself and his siblings, “Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro, and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died.”
“George H.W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for,” he said. “The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41’s life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for Dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens.”
There were fears that after his wife, Barbara, died in April, Bush might die, too. He was admitted to the hospital with a blood infection on April 23, one day after the funeral for the former first lady, and remained there for 13 days. He also spent time in the hospital in May and June, but lived to be the first former president to reach the age of 94.
Bush was the patriarch of a political dynasty that included one son who served as president, another as a governor and a grandson who currently holds statewide office in Texas.
The senior Bush had a lifetime of public service before he became president — as a young Navy pilot in World War II, Texas congressman, CIA director and faithful vice president to Ronald Reagan.
“His loyalty to Ronald Reagan was legendary,” said biographer Timothy Naftali. “He did not always agree with Ronald Reagan. And he was so secretive about those moments where he disagreed, we don’t even have good documentation — at least not available yet — on when he disagreed.”
Bush famously disagreed with Reagan when he ran against him in the Republican primary of 1980. Bush branded Reagan’s supply-side faith that government could slash tax rates without losing revenue as “voodoo economic policy.”
“Read my lips,” Bush pledged at the 1988 GOP convention. “No new taxes.”
Bush trounced Democrat Michael Dukakis that year to win the White House. But he ultimately backtracked on his lip-reading promise. During 1990 budget negotiations with Democratic congressional leaders, Bush, like Reagan before him, agreed to a tax increase.
His press secretary, Marlin Fitzwater, recalled a budget meeting where the deal was presented.
“The minute I saw it, I looked around the table and the Democrats looked like the cat who ate the canary,” Fitzwater said. “They knew they had negotiated a winner.”
The tax hike cut the deficit, but it cost Bush dearly with conservatives. Years later, he would receive a Profile in Courage award from John F. Kennedy’s grandson, who said, “America’s gain was President Bush’s loss.”
Bush’s most notable accomplishments in the White House came in the area of foreign policy. While Reagan is often credited with winning the Cold War, it was Bush who successfully navigated the aftermath. His low-key approach avoided inflaming communist hard-liners and allowed for the peaceful breakup of the Soviet Union.
“The soft landing that occurred, which was not inevitable, is in large measure due to George H.W. Bush’s diplomacy,” said Naftali.
Bush, who served as U.S. envoy to China as well as a globe-trotting vice president, had a thick Rolodex and plenty of experience working the phones. His lifetime of foreign contacts also came in handy when Iraqi troops invaded Kuwait in 1990. Bush methodically assembled an international coalition to push them back.
A five-week bombing campaign was followed by a 100-hour ground assault that routed the Iraqis from Kuwait. Some wanted allied troops to push on to Baghdad and topple Saddam Hussein. But Bush said no.
“The president’s decision was we are not going on to Baghdad,” the late diplomat Lawrence Eagleburger recalled. “If we do, we will have violated the agreement we have with our allies, which was to bring Saddam out of Kuwait. It was not to bring Saddam down. And in addition, it will tie us into an area where we cannot be sure how soon we can withdraw.”
Bush’s son George W. would revisit that decision a dozen years later, with costly results.
The first Gulf War was a clear victory for U.S. forces. As commander in chief, George H.W. Bush saw his approval ratings soar to nearly 90 percent. His lock on a second term seemed so solid, many national Democrats opted to sit out the 1992 election, leaving it to the governor of a small Southern state to challenge him.
Bill Clinton had one big advantage, though: the economy, stupid. As the country sank into recession, Bush’s popularity sank with it. There was no parachute or soft landing this time. He lost a three-way race in the November election, carrying just 38 percent of the vote.
More than two decades later, George W. Bush, who experienced his own roller coaster ride in the polls, wrote an affectionate portrait of his father, titled 41.
“I want people to better appreciate George Bush, as not only a great person but a very successful president,” the younger Bush said.
Bush was also the linchpin of a political dynasty that now spans four generations — including a second son, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who ran for the White House and lost in the 2016 Republican primaries as Donald Trump became the dominant force in a GOP that had evolved far from where it was when the 41st president was in office.
Whatever the senior Bush’s political shortcomings, hindsight has cast his presidency in a kinder, gentler light.

I’m Ready For a Debate with Buhari- Atiku
ABUJA- Ahead of the 2019 general elections, Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar has expressed readiness to share the podium with President Muhammadu Buhari to debate issues of governance. Atiku who stated this Friday while addressing the 81st National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting of the party also tasked party leaders and supporters to work hard to ensure victory at the polls.
Calling on leaders and members of the party to imbibe the lessons of the 2015 electoral setback; Atiku stressed the place of reforms in the repositioned PDP, adding that victory is a possibility for the party, if it goes into the polls as one indivisible group. He also lauded the National Working Committee, NWC, for displaying financial transparency in the running of the party affairs. He said: “I am ready to debate Muhammadu Buhari,” he began to the applause of the capacity -packed NEC Hall. “After the convention in Port- Harcourt which was the most credible convention I have witnessed since the formation of this party in 1998, we witnessed a lull. It is time for us to pick up the momentum again. “Earlier this morning, I had the opportunity to be invited by the NWC for the first time in the history of this party.
They showed me details of income expenditure of all the money realised in the convention. I have never seen such fiscal responsibility by any political party. “I said to them, that that has posed a very big challenge should we win and we must win the Presidential election, and we will have to enthrone the best fiscal responsibility this country has ever known or ever seen, simply because our party has given us that leadership. “If we work together, I am convinced without any doubt that this election is for us to win. We have build up so much momentum after the Port Harcourt convention but we also witnessed a lull of the momentum. It is now time for us to pick up the momentum again until we land in Aso Villa. “Yes, we lost elections.
We have learnt our lessons and because we have learnt our lessons, we embarked on reforms. The reform committee which was headed by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu did an excellent work.” On his part, Saraki tasked members of the party to stay united, adding that the PDP has the experience to bounce back to power in 2019. He said, “The people are with us and when the people are with us, God is with us. “I emphasize that we must stay strong because it is not going to be easy. Let us remember that when we were going for the convention, this room (NEC hall) was vibrating.
“There was tension in the country and people never believed that it was possible because it has never happened where people will go to a primary and come out without even one person saying, I don’t agree. It has never happened even in governorship talk more of Presidential primary. “I have said it many times that APC is not our opponent on the ballot paper, it is the security agents that are our opponent on the ballot paper. “If you talk to 10 Nigerians today, they will tell you that yes your party is popular but they will rig. What does that mean? We must stand, we must stand for free and credible election. We must stand for an election where people have the right to vote.
Election cannot be credible when you have a practice that two days before the election, they will start looking for opposition leaders in their houses to arrest them; that must stop. “And let it not be that there will be no Nigeria after the election and as such we must fight for a free and fair election. He called for reconciliation across states chapters of the party ahead of the elections. “Please let us go and reconcile our states,so that we can all work together and give support to our Presidential candidate, because as I said, our own ambition is small when compared to the ambition of this country.
“People are suffering, there’s poverty in the land, there’s insecurity in the land and as I keep saying and I will keep on saying, you cannot give what you don’t have. What this country needs now is someone that understands what it takes to bring food to the table; a man that understands what it takes to unite Nigeria and provide security. “Let the man that does not have it leave the place and let the man that has it come in and do it,” he added. Speaking earlier, national chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus challenged President Buhari to a public debate with Atiku saying, the nation will not accept debate by proxy. “We challenge President Buhari to come out and debate with our candidate.
He should not use proxy, ” he said. He called for the resignation of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, accusing the duo of plot to manipulate the electoral process in favour of the ruling party.
Meanwhile , a mild drama played out at Wadata yesterday just as Atiku was called upon to address party leaders gathered for the 81st NEC meeting of the PDP. Just as he cleared his voice to speak, an unidentified voice from the audience said, “Jubril must go,” to which Atiku beaming with smile responded: “Which Jubril? The one in Sudan or the one in Abuja?” The capacity-filled NEC hall reeled in laughter for close to a minute.
The social media has in recent months been treated to a rumour of the existence of a Jubril, supposedly of a Sudanese origin, in the corridors of power. Prominent members who graced the meeting included governors Abdulfatai Ahmed (Kwara), Dave Umahi (Ebonyi) and Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta) states; Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, former governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Gators and ex-Kogi state governor, Ibrahim Idris among others.
Also, the PDP yesterday inaugurated it’s Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja with secondus as chairman while Atiku was named co-chairman. National Publicity Secretary of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan is the Director, Media and Publicity of the campaign Council.

Shameful Act as two Struggle For Speask’s Seat
A mild drama took place yesterday, at the Anambra State House of Assembly, as the two factional Speakers, Mrs. Rita Maduagwu and Mr. Ikem Uzoezie, struggled to occupy the seat of the speaker.
The convergence of the lawmakers followed the vacation of the order sealing off the assembly premises by the police on Wednesday.
At about 11:00a.m, Maduagwu came into the House Chamber with three members. She sat on the speaker’s seat and left, after a man in suit whispered to her. She walked out, entered her official car and left the complex.
Shortly after she left, Uzoezie came in with seven members and sat on the speaker’s seat and, also, left when the deputy speaker said they should go to the executive chambers for discussion.
However, trouble ensued when Maduagwu returned to the House Chambers and was on her way to the speaker’s seat, when Uzoezie, who was still in the Chamber, rushed and sat on the seat before her.
Maduagwu stood and asked Uzoezie to leave the seat for her, but, her words fell on deaf ears. Their exchanges brought other members to the table.
After some minutes of altercation, some of the members, who felt ashamed, especially the Majority Leader, Jideofor Okoye, urged the members and the two speakers to move to the executive chambers for discussion.
After much persuasion, the two speakers and members present went out of the chambers.
Daily Sun gathered that members of Uzoezie’s faction, which were more in number, yesterday, were in the House to ensure that the Maduagwu faction did not sit as their matter was already in court.

S- East Leaders Pledges Their support to Atiku
MUTTERINGS over the attitude of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar towards South East party leaders have been squashed following secret meetings between the candidate and the aggrieved leaders, Vanguard has learned.
PDP governors in the South-East and Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, have bought into the Atiku presidential aspiration, following the meetings, Vanguard gathered. They had been peeved over his attitude since his emergence as the candidate of the party. The reconciliation was achieved in one-on-one meetings held behind closed doors between Monday and Tuesday.
The meetings commenced, Monday, when Atiku flew to meet with Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State in Enugu at the end of which the governor pledged to work with Atiku and to be fully involved in the campaigns. Following that, the candidate met Ekweremadu at the latter’s Abuja residence where they also reconciled. “They bared their minds and the candidate accepted where he was wrong, and the candidate said that he should be forgiven for any and all errors, and Ekweremadu said that the interest of the party remains paramount. It was a very good meeting,” a top party source who helped facilitate the meeting and one of the early canvassers of the Atiku presidential ticket told Vanguard.
Atiku also met with Governor Okezie Ikpeazu in Abuja where they also harmonised and made up. The only governor that the candidate did not meet personally was Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State, and that was because of scheduling difficulties. Vanguard, however, gathered that the vice-presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi was able to meet with Umahi and that issues have also been straightened out between the two. There were insinuations that Atiku had despised the person of Ekweremadu who is the highest political office holder of the party and had kept the party together until the defection of Senate President Bukola Saraki.
The governors were also peeved that the emergence of Obi as the presidential running mate was made in concert with political players outside the region and that they were not carried along. Despite these concerns, Atiku after the nomination of Obi travelled to Dubai for an elongated stay during which he was said to have prepared for his campaign. On returning to the country, the former vice-president met with South East leaders, but that meeting was boycotted by the political class including the governors.
Following these concerns, some of Atiku’s associates had sought a joint meeting with the Southeast leaders in Enugu, but that suggestion was said to have been shot down for one-on-one meetings with the affected leaders and governors which Atiku adopted.
Senate President Bukola Saraki, chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus were part of the meetings, Vanguard gathered. “I can confirm authoritatively that they are all working together in the same direction. Saraki who is the campaign manager expressed happiness with the outcome of the meetings,” one source revealed.
