As the 2023 election campaigns heat up, the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that civil servants in the State would soon enjoy salary increments.
Sanwo-Olu made this known on Tuesday while addressing the workers at the state secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja.
He said: “I have looked around and I know that as a country, there is pressure. I know that, as a country, there is a high level of inflation.
“At our cabinet meeting, I instructed the Head of Service office and the Ministry of Staff, Training, and Pensions to start work on how we are going to increase the entire salary of our public servants.’’
Inflation has been trending at about 21 per cent year-on-year, which means that the purchasing power of Nigerians has been grossly eroded. This has put a number of households in dire straits.
When the promise materializes, Lagos civil servants will at least have a respite from the biting inflation.
Sanwo-Olu, a first term governor, is running for a second term.
He is also actively involved in the campaign of his political mentor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Meanwhile, civil servants in the State erupted in joy after Sanwo-Olu made the announcement. They danced while praising the the governor for his magnanimity.
