ABUJA — June 18, 2026 — The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has called on the Federal Government to immediately declare a National Security Emergency.
The group warned that Nigeria is facing “unprecedented insecurity” and said the move would empower military commanders with more authority to tackle banditry, kidnappings, and terrorism nationwide. Presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar’s African Democratic Congress (ADC) also urged the FG to declare a security emergency this week.
The calls come amid mass trials of 490+ suspected terrorists in Abuja and a joint US-Nigeria operation that killed 21 suspected ISWAP fighters in Borno State.
