Exchange Rate: Naira to Dollar as at Today

At the end of trading on Friday, the naira had both positive and negative run at the parallel and official markets respectively.

In the parallel foreign exchange market, the Naira achieved its largest gain against the Dollar witnessing a week-on-week surge that caught the attention of traders and investors alike.

A Bureau de Change operator in Wuse Zone, Abuja, reported that the Naira strengthened to N1570 per Dollar, a notable increase from the N1590 per Dollar traded the previous day. This translates to a remarkable gain of N20 within just one day—the highest appreciation recorded since the start of the week.

However,  in a sharp contrast, the official market painted a different picture, as the Naira slipped to N1,500.41 per Dollar on Friday down from N1,499.98 the day before.

In summary, on the last day of trading for the week, the Naira rose by N20 at the black market while experiencing a drop of N0.89 in the official market.

This fluctuation comes on the heels of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s latest move to enhance oversight on Bureau de Change operators across the nation. The apex bank’s Trade and Exchange Department has imposed a new cap, limiting weekly foreign exchange sales to BDC operators to $25,000.

BREAKING: FG scraps JSS, SSS, introduces 12-year basic education model

The Federal Government has announced the scrapping of all Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary Schools in the country and introduced a compulsory 12-year uninterrupted basic education model after which a Nigerian child can aspire to higher education.

With this development, the Nigerian Government is seeking the abolition of 6-3-3-4 education system and replacing it with 12-4.

This is even as it has sought the approval of the National Council on Education to officially adopt 16 years as the minimum entry age requirement into the country’s tertiary institutions.

Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, revealed this on Thursday in Abuja during the 2025 extraordinary National Council on Education meeting.

It should be noted  that the NCE is the highest policy-making body in the education sector.

The event was graced by commissioners for education in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), agencies and parastatals under the Ministry, and development partners.

According to the Minister, by subsuming secondary education into basic education, students will benefit from uninterrupted learning up to the age of 16.

Alausa said the new policy is in line with global best practices.
The reform, he stressed, will also reduce dropout rates by eliminating financial and systemic barriers that currently prevent students from completing secondary education.

“Extending basic education to 12 years will ensure a standardized curriculum that is uniformly implemented across the nation,” Alausa said.

“This will also facilitate early exposure to vocational and entrepreneurial skills, preparing students for both higher education and employment.

“Many developed nations have implemented similar systems where basic education spans 12 years, ensuring that students acquire foundational knowledge before specializing at tertiary levels.

“This reform also aligns Nigeria’s education system with international standards, fostering better educational outcomes and global competitiveness.”
He said it will also lead to economic and social impact, adding that “Educated youth contribute significantly to national development.

“When students receive an extended period of compulsory education, they are better equipped to join the workforce with relevant skills. This reform will also reduce child labor and other social vices resulting from premature school dropouts.”

He highlighted the implementation strategies to successfully integrate secondary education into basic education to include: policy reforms, infrastructure expansion, teacher training and recruitment, funding and partnerships, curriculum enhancement.

Open Letter To Prof Chukwuma Soludo -Okafor

Dear Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, the Executive Governor of Anambra State,

1.) The disturbing reports coming from your hometown, Isuofia, this morning have left me perturbed.

2.) It was reported that young men from your town who were merely attempting to eke out a living by engaging in menial jobs were killed in Owerre-Ezukala by your security men.

3.) It’s on this note that I am compelled to inquire whether these young men were found to be in possession of firearms, whether they were apprehended and handed over to the police, and whether they were afforded due process, such as a fair trial, before being subjected to summary execution.

4.) As you are aware, Your Excellency, Sir, the Anambra State House of Assembly enacted the Anambra Homeland Security Law, which EXPLICITLY MANDATES the Agunechemba security outfit to ARREST and HAND OVER suspected criminals to the police for prosecution .

5.) I am therefore at a loss to understand at what point this mandate was expanded to include extrajudicial killings, which is a contravention of the principles of justice and the rule of law.

6.) Your Excellency, Sir, is it not a fundamental principle of justice that people are presumed innocent until proven guilty?

7.) Please, can you now investigate that case properly to know actually why they were killed just like common criminals and their bodies displayed for caricature?

8.) I would like to remind you, Your Excellency, Sir, that you established this Agunechemba security outfit to maintain law and order in our state, and not to perpetrate violence and intimidation.

9.) Hence, it is imperative that you ensure that the security outfit operates within the bounds of law, and that you take immediate action to address the concerns of the people in this particular issue since many have reported that those young men are mere workers who were on “outside job”.

10.) The people of Anambra State look up to you for leadership and guidance, Sir, and it is your responsibility to ensure that their rights and freedoms are protected, please.

11.) While wishing that these concerns I raised may be addressed, kindly accept as always my sincerest respect and esteem, please.

Breaking News! Hon Justice Azuka found dead.

The decomposing body of Hon Justice Azuka, member of the Anambra State House of Assembly representing Onitsha North Constituency 1 has been found.

The body was discovered by the combined Security team at 2nd Niger Bridge last night.

The suspects who kidnapped and killed him have also been arrested.

Our Reporter gathered that it was when the kidnappers were arrested that they took the security officials to where they dumbed the body.

Hon Azuka was kidnapped on 24th December, 2024 along Ugwunabakpa road Inland town Onitsha.

This is sad and tragic.

We commend the security agencies for arresting the culprits but very unfortunate that the House of Assembly member had been killed and dumped before the breakthrough.

This underscores the prevailing insecurity in Anambra State. A sitting Honourable Member was kidnapped in the centre of Onitsha Town and couldn’t been rescued.

On Tuesday night it was reported that kidnappers had a field day along Awka road of Onitsha and fired several gunshots.

These criminality must stop. The Agunechemba, Udo Ga Chi and all security apparatus in the state must rise up to the occasion and save the state from reports like this.

May the soul of Hon Justice Azuka rest in peace

Canada bans US firms from govt contracts, dumps Elon Musk’s Starlink deal

Ontario, Canada’s most populous province and its economic engine, announced Monday a ban on US companies bidding on tens of billions of dollars worth of government contracts, and dumped a deal with Elon Musk’s Starlink in a pushback to US tariffs.

“Ontario won’t do business with people hellbent on destroying our economy,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford said on X.

“US-based businesses will now lose out on tens of billions of dollars in new revenues. They only have President Trump to blame.”

Ford said he was “ripping up” a Can$100 million (US$68 million) contract with Starlink, signed in November, to provide internet services to 15,000 homes and businesses in remote northern parts of Ontario.

Starlink satellites were to start beaming internet services to northern Ontario starting in June.

The company’s owner, Musk, is the world’s richest man and a close adviser to US President Donald Trump, who vowed to slap 25 percent tariffs on Canadian imports starting on Tuesday.

Ontario’s liquor stores also started on Monday pulling US beer, wine and spirits off shelves.

Several other Canadian provinces including Quebec, Nova Scotia and British Columbia were doing the same.

The government-run Liquor Control Board of Ontario is one of the world’s largest single buyers of alcohol, supplying its own stores as well as local restaurants, bars and other retailers in the province.

It sells almost Can$1 billion worth of US alcohol, or about 3,600 products, each year.

Trump spoke earlier Monday with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about the tariffs, and said in a post on his Truth Social platform they would speak again later in the day.
