There is bad news in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital as a serving policeman attached to the state’s police command, Mr Donatus Oyibe, yesterday afternoon reportedly committed suicide. The incidence, Daily Sun found, happened at Ukwuakpu axis of Abakaliki capital.
Also, the decomposing body of a 70-year-old woman allegedly abducted and killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Ezi Ajah, Amuro Community in Afikpo North Local Government Area of the state, Mrs Uche Oko, was found in the bush by the residents of the area.
Oyibe, a native of Ndegu Ishieke in Ebonyi Local Government Area of the state was said to have jumped inside a deep well when he went to fetch water.
According to sources close to the deceased, his tragic death might be connected with his recent transfer to Borno State. He was reportedly displeased after his posting letter was released on August 28.
The deceased’s daughter, Ukamaka, narrated that his late father took bucket to fetch water from the well but could not be seen for several hours. His unknown whereabouts created suspicion and tension that led to his search.
She added that when they got to the water well, his bucket was seen and they looked inside the well only to discover that he has died.
“He went to fetch water from our well on Sunday night but could not come back after some time that created suspicion and we started looking for him. I went to the well and saw his bucket. When I looked inside the well, I discovered that he has died” she narrated.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Loveth Ogah, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said she was not aware of the development. She said that she would get back to our reporter but did not return as at the time of filing this report.
A middle-aged man, Mr. Friday Njoku, has committed suicide after he allegedly murdered his fiancée, Cynthia Nwofia, 25, over suspicion of infidelity in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.
The late Nwofia was murdered at her Abakaliki residence around 11.30pm on Wednesday, while the alleged killer, Njoku, committed suicide by drinking poison on Thursday.
Njoku, who hailed from Izzi LGA of the state, was an okada rider. He had been dating the late Nwofia for two years before the tragedy.
Addressing journalists in Abakaliki, Nwofia’s elder brother, Mr. Mishak Nwofia, claimed that Njoku stabbed his fiancée to death.
He said the family had reported the matter to the police, adding that the remains of his sister had been deposited at the mortuary of the Federal Teaching hospital, Abakaliki, for an autopsy.
He said, “Friday Njoku was to become the husband of my late sister, having made his intention to marry her known. He even brought drinks to my family which was accepted, although both of them have not officially been joined together as husband and wife as the tradition demands.”
Nwofia debunked the allegation of infidelity against his sister.
One of the late Nwofia’s neighbours, Mr. Michael Ugwu, explained that at about 11pm on Thursday, he heard the panic cry of Nwofia’s roommate, calling on neighbours that the victim was being stabbed with dagger by her fiancé in their room.
“When people rushed out to rescue her, Mr. Njoku ran out of Cynthia’s room and escaped through a bush path. We hurriedly conveyed the girl to the Federal Teaching hospital Abakaliki where doctors on duty confirmed her dead,” he said.
Efforts to get the reaction of Njoku’s family proved abortive when our correspondent visited his residence on Friday as none of his family members were around.
Confirming the incident, Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Lovet Odah, said the police had commenced a full investigation into the matter to unravel the circumstances surrounding the murder of the deceased and the suicide case.
“Our special anti-robbery squad, visited Njoku’s residence and found him dead. With him was a bottle of chemical and there were stains of the poison in his mouth,” Odah said.
OWERRI—Palpable fear has gripped Imo indigenes, following the increasing level of criminality in the state. The latest victim is a Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Cyriacus Onunkwo, who was September 1, 2017, abducted and killed in cold blood. Vanguard investigations revealed that in the evening of the same day, about 7pm, the newly ordained younger brother of Rev. Fr. Jude Udokwu, was somewhere close to Mbara Okporo with his friend, when some gunmen suspected to be kidnappers attacked them. Although the priest escaped by the whiskers, it was, however, gathered that his car was riddled with bullets. It was also gathered that the same armed group struck shortly after at Nkwoito. It was at this point, Vanguard gathered, that Fr. Onunkwo was kidnapped.
A devastating flood has claimed a 50-year-old woman at Mebiowa Okposi in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The victim, identified as Grace, was said to have been among several persons washed away on the road leading to the Njoku Oha bridge in the community, on Saturday night.
Farms in the area were also submerged.
A community leader, Chief Okereke Ogudu, who confirmed the incident on telephone told our correspondent that they were still counting their losses, adding that the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) was yet to be informed.
Similar incident occurred in the town about two weeks ago where corpses were allegedly washed away from a mortuary at the General Hospital, okposi.
The Movement for Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), under the leadership of Mr. Uchenna Madu, has warned South East governors against any step that would undermine the struggle for the actualidation of a sovereign state of Biafra.
The group gave the warning after its meeting in Abakaliki, EBonyi State capital, with some of its national officers.
Ebonyi State Coordinator of MASSOB, Ikenna Kalu, who read out a communiqué signed by himself and all local government coordinators of the state, said any governor in the South East who was not supporting Biafra agitation wasandenemy of the Igbo.
The communiqué partly read: “We are determined to actualize Biafra through
non-violence since we don’t have guns or any weapon. We insist on absolute freedom of Biafra because not even Igbo presidency or restructuring will stop us from agitating for Biafra because that is where we come from.
“We are warning Igbo governors to be careful and avoid any step that is against Biafra. They should be careful of any step that is against Biafra freedom. Igbo are suffering, we are in bondage. So, anybody that is not with us is against us. South East Governors should be careful with any step that is against Biafra freedom.
“No amount of Uwazuruike’s BIM will stop us or even their cheap black mail that will stop us from actualizing Biafra. Our meeting with Ohanaeze Ndigbo was not for any political interest but for the overall interest of the Igbo.
On the planned arrest of leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, by the federal government, the group vowed that it will resist it with its last blood.
“We will fight, we will resist with even our last blood if they attempt to arrest Nnamdi Kanu again. We want to remind Nigerians that they are sitting on a time bomb”, it said.

ABUJA – PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari Sunday said that the country should not spend her resources and energy debating disintegration. The President also said that the noises in some quarters about the division of the country was part of the rebirth going on, adding that God had designed that the country will be together.
President Buhari spoke Sunday in his address on the occasion of the Eid- Kabir hosted by his wife Aisha Buhari as part of the Sallah festivities said what was required by every citizen was sacrifice so as to take the nation to the destiny designed by God. The President represented by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo at the gathering at the Old Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja, said the nation God had in mind while bringing every ethnic nationalities together was a diverse nation. Although President Buhari was unable to be present at the occasion because he was celebrating Sallah at his home town Daura having been away from his country home for over a year said he held the belief that Nigeria will remain together.
According to him, “The significance of this celebration is the willingness of Abraham to make the great sacrifice of possibly the dearest thing to him, his son Isaac. “Obviously, anyone who knows anything at all about the kinds of things that…..it is a willingness to make a great sacrifice. People saying their own things here and there. “But, He has also planned that this country will remain together, and that we will be a nation that is gifted just as we have the oil, the gas, and the most arable lands than most continents. “This is a country that has all of what other countries will travel and spend money looking for the sort of resources that we have.
All of the tourism resources that we have people will travel everywhere looking for it. “It is a nation of men and women so creative and prosperous. That we will feed the entire continent and create opportunities for the world. All the different ethnic groups are important in that arrangement. “On every ethnicity, incredible minds, brilliant and creative people doing all manner of things. “Our energies and resources shouldn’t be spent again on debate about division. Our manifest destiny is to be a great nation, not to be a nation where we are talking about division. “We must focus out time, our energies and our resources on being that great nation that God has called us to be. “I think we have started building that country already. “Despite all the noise that we hear, all that noise is part of the building. Everybody knows that you cannot have birth without noise. No woman delivers a baby without some noise and without some pains. “What we are hearing today are the noises and the pains of that great nation that God is about to give birth to.” Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari thanked Nigerians for the prayers offered for her husband’s speedy recovery while he was bedridden in a United Kingdom (UK) hospital. Represented by the Minister of Interior, Lt Gen Abdulrahman Dambazzau, she urged Nigerians to support the administration’s effort to sustain the peace and development in the country. She said, “Without development there will be no peace and without peace there will be no development.” Messages from other speakers including the representative of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) , Rev Israel Akanji, and Special Assistant to the President on Prosecution, Okoi Obono- Obla centered on Nigeria’s unity.
The Foundation for Ethnic Harmony in Nigeria (FEHN) has concluded plans to train 45 members of Oodua People Congress (OPC), Arewa Youths and Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on ethnic harmony and how to entrench peace and unity in Nigeria.
This was disclosed by the Chairman, the Foundation for Ethnic Harmony in Nigeria (FEHN),Mr. Allen Onyema who said that the trainers who specialise in conflict resolution would come from the United States of America (USA) to organize the training and after the training in Nigeria the beneficiaries would also be taken overseas for further training at FEHN’s expense.
He said that the objective of the training is to make the beneficiaries to eschew all those things that create division among ethnic nationalities and to see and help to build Nigeria as one, united entity and also help to galvanise their members to unite and campaign for one united Nigeria.
Onyema said that the Foundation was at the forefront in promoting peace and unity in Nigeria during the Niger Delta militancy, which contributed immensely in quenching the crisis in that part of the country.
Said Onyema, “we are training 45 youths from OPC, Arewa and IPOB. This is our effort to ensure that Nigeria remains one united country because we are better off living together and if any part of this country splits, it can never rise to any level compared to if all Nigerians are living together because this country is a great country, which we must work hard to sustain.”
“I think what most people are against is perceived injustice or imbalance but the most beautiful thing is that most people want one, big Nigeria than a fragmented Nigeria,” Onyema added.
Onyema said he hopes to see the end of the present crisis and said FEHN would do everything possible to end the various ethnic and tribal crisis and agitation in the country.
“If I tell myself there is no tension, it will be a lie. But we all must be positive about it. One thing I want to say to my fellow Nigerians is that conflict is part of life. Conflict can become a catalyst for positive change; it depends on the kind of approach or response you give to issues of conflict. If you give the right approach to issues of conflict it becomes a catalyst for positive change. However, if you give the wrong response to issues of conflict it becomes an avenue for catastrophe. So we should make the present conflict as catalyst for positive change,” Onyema said,
The FEHN Chairman, who is also the Chairman of Air Peace, said that the training of these youths would be part of his contribution to the quest for unity and ethnic harmony in Nigeria.
“Everybody must not be a political leader to contribute to the development of the country. Recently I wrote to the state security service and I told them to please give me permission to engage the Arewa Youths and IPOB. That I believe from my position of expertise in conflict management, that I could handle these people. I know that we can make them come together and embrace peace and that I what we are working on now, which I know we will realize to strengthen the unity of Nigeria,” he added.
Niger Delta militants have warned the Federal Government of the dangers the country would face, if the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is re-arrested by security agents.
The militants have also given the Federal Government a two-week ultimatum to release two members of IPOB, Chidiebere Onwudiwe and Bright Chimezie, who had been in detention, or expect attack from them, which could be in any form.
The militants, who are members of Niger Delta People Democratic Front (NDPDF), Concerned Militant Leaders (CML) and Rainbow Marabas (RM), gave the warning yesterday, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, after their crucial meeting.
Leaders of the groups, identified as General Iyoyo Playboy (NDPDF), General Ben (CML) and General Billy Anaeja, warned that if Kanu was re-arrested. they, would cause spontaneous attacks in major states in the country.
Also, the Niger Delta militants accused have Federal Government of playing politics with the lives of Nigerians, particularly people from South East and South-South geo-political zones.
A statement jointly issued by Iyoyo, Ben and Anaeja, through their tweet handle, flayed Federal Government for exhibiting hatred on the regions and individuals that expressed dissatisfaction with the All Progressives Congress (APC) style of administration.
They stated: “Federal Government cannot do it; but, if it tries to re-arrest Nnamdi Kanu, Leader of IPOB, it (FG) will regret the consequences. It will not believe what Nigeria will be thrown into.
” Federal Government has shown, through its moves to re-arrest Nnamdi Kanu, that it does not value lives of Nigerians. Government wants to use attempt to re-arrest the IPOB Leader to escalate the crisis in the country.
“If government is serious, it should go ahead to arrest and wait for the result. We will back IPOB and give the group support in any form , even without them expecting it.
” We learnt that Federal Government has deployed more security to the South-South and South East geo-political because of Nnamdi Kanu. We dare them to go ahead and execute”, they warned.
The freedom fighters, who said they believed in the IPOB struggle, asked why Federal Government has remained silent over the activities of Northern youths against the Igbo and killings by Fulani herdsmen.
“What has Federal Government done about arresting Arewa youths, who hate the Igbo people with passion? What has Federal Government done with the Fulani herdsmen? How many of them have been arrested. Why is it silent, but is worried about a non-violent IPOB?
“We are reiterating our stand that we, the Niger Delta agitators, will resist any attempt to re-arrest the IPOB leader. We will resist FG and face the consequences. We are not begging those ruling not to go ahead and execute their plot”, the militants stressed.
The Federal Government recently initiated a move to re-arrest the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu after he was granted bail by an Abuja Federal High Court. Meanwhile, Kanu in an exclusive interview with OKEY SAMPSON vowed to resist the arrest, insisting that Nigeria would burn if the Federal Government move to re-arrest him. He also spoke on other issues as they relate to the agitation.
You’ve toured the territory called Biafra since you came outof detention, what is your impressionabout what you have seen so far?
I’ve not completed the tour as a matter of fact. What I have seen so far is much enthusiasm. I have seen hope, the rekindling of hope and I have seen the burning desire for genuine change and the call for freedom which is exactly what we are doing and pursuing. There is no visiting dignitary, Head of State, political or religious leader that has been able to command the type of crowd that come out anywhere I visit or any town I go to. It has never been replicated or set as a precedence ever before. All the crowd that came out to welcome me were unprecedented; they came out in their historical numbers to witness the gospel that I preached. I don’t pay any of them. In fact, those people are the ones who are responsible for the running of IPOB and to make things happen. If I were to visit Lagos, it will be the same, If were to go to Kano, it will be the same thing. People will come out to see me because I preach the truth.
What has been the message all this while?
The message is that we IPOB members must remain resolute, disciplined and focused in all we are doing. We are not going to relent; the call for Biafra is our own interpretation of the principles of self-determination.That’s exactly what we are doing.
There are reports that you’ve reneged on your call for the boycott of the Anambra election. Could this be true?
I gave a speech in Aba, Abia State on Sunday and I made it absolutely clear that the boycott stays. We must boycott election in Anambra State.It is our civic responsibility to do so and that’s what we are going to do – total and absolute boycott, to let the whole world understand the strength of IPOB on the ground, in Anambra State.
You’ve gone round and your people are happy, but to some other people, you are over-stepping your bounds by flouting your bail conditions. What’s your reaction?
Are you talking about an illegal and unconstitutional bail condition?A bail condition designed to emasculate and basically render IPOB impotent? Does anyone seriously think I’m going to stand for IPOB to be rendered desolate? I can’t allow that to happen, I have not violated any laws unknown to the Nigerian judicial establishment. I have not committed any offence; no crime whatsoever. I said no crime. It is a violation of my right to ask me not to speak; to ask me not to be in a congregation of not more than 10 people, an absolute violation of articles enshrined in the constitution that I expect all and sundry to be rising up in defence of, not trying to justify the erosion of my fundamental human rights to speak, to be heard and to associate.
President Muhammadu Buhari was the one who broke the laws, he disobeyed the direct court order to release me unconditionally, not once, but twice. Honourable Shuaibu of Wuse Magistrate Court granted me bail, Buhari did not release me. Hon Justice Ademola granted me unconditional bail, Buhari and his cousin, Lawal Daura refused to honour that court order. They are the ones who should be detained for flagrant disobedience to court orders. I wantthe northern Arewa irredentists to call for the arrest of Buhari and Daura for flouting court order after court order, asking for my release. It smacks of hypocrisy and absolute cowardice that people who could not rise up in defence of the law when a court made a judicial pronouncement are now clamouring for my arrest because they believe it is easy to do so. Before now, Nnamdi Kanu is Igbo, he is a Biafran and can be arrested and nothing will happen but that would not be anymore, it would no longer happen.
Recently Arewa youths ordered the Igbo in the North to leave and nothing happened to them. The same Arewa youths are calling for your re-arrest and the Federal Government is making moves towards that. How do you reconcile this?
They are the ones in power. They believe that Fulani owns Nigeria and people must understand this. They conquered Hausa people and Hausa helped them to conquer other people, everybody is being terrified by the Fulani. Everybody is scared of them; but I’m Nnamdi Kanu, I’m not scared of them.
Are you not afraid that you could be re-arrested as the Federal Government has begun that move?
I don’t care! Quote me verbatim.If I’m re-arrested, this country will burn, I assure you. From where that oil money they depend on, they can no longer have access to it. I assure them that. This is not empty threat.We’re IPOB, we don’t abandon our own.
I know you have a son whom you have not set your eyes on since he was born, because of agitation. Don’t you feel for this boy; his future if something untoward happens to him?
I will sacrifice anything including my family to ensure that Biafra is restored. Any obstacle on my way will be obliterated. I’m not asking for Sokoto; I’m not asking for Kaduna, or Borno, I said this very land where my progenitors raised us; the land of our ancestors; of over 5, 000 years old, this land must be free, absolutely free, I assure you of that. The way we were before the whiteman came; had the white man not come, I would have no relationship with Sokoto, non whatsoever. The whiteman is not God, only God can create a nation, Lord Luguard is not God, only God can create a nation. I can tell you the day Nigeria was created even till the exact second and hour, but you can’t tell me when Biafra was created. It came as a result of organic interaction of cultures and value systems and traditions fussed into one to make Biafra a possibility, that is how nations emerge. By the collision of commonalities and value systems, not one idiot somewhere pontificating and dictating to us who should be in a country or not. Other African people can accept it, Nnamdi kanu cannot accept that. The whiteman is not God and cannot create a country for me. Have Nigerians sat round the table to say we have agreed that our name is Nigeria? We want to live together; perhaps, there will be a strong argument against what I’m proposing. Right now, what we are seeking to do is go back to where we were before 1914. From there, we can then begin to negotiate and discuss.
President Buhari in a recent broadcast said Nigeria’s unity is non negotiable and directed the security agencies to deal with any group that will work against this. What’s your reaction?
I don’t place any degree of importance to his speech and I willtell you why. First, I don’t believe he was the one that wrote the speech, I don’t believe he was the one that read it. If they prove me wrong, they should subscribe to a DNA test. That is number one; number two, if that speech was contemporary as they made us believe and not a generic one, how come there was no mention of the quit notice, how come he did not call for the people inciting Northern youths, Almajiri to genocide? Why is it that those calling for the re-arrest of Nnamdi Kanu cannot call for the arrestof the so called Arewa elders, not the youths because they came out to say that their elders knew what they were doing. They have the support of their elders, even the governors, that’s what they said. Why is nobody arresting them becausethey are in the army, they are in the air force, they are in the police, there is Fulani everywhere, they control everything so, when they speak, you are supposed to be shaking, but unfortunately, I’m not one of those that shake; instead when I speak they should be shaking because they know what is behind me. They are more intelligent than most people, I give them credit for that, they know what it means to arrest me, they understand the implications. Look at the first one they went through, Nigeria is at the brink of collapse. Second one, we kick it over the precipice I assure you. Life to me is meaningless, the only thing that gives me hope everyday is the idea that I may see Biafra. If I am not a dead man, what am I doing without Biafra? Life will be meaningless, useless to me.
You spoke about the wall of the country falling if you are re-arrested. Since IPOB is non violent, how are you going to achieve this?
Apartheid collapsed in South Africa, segregation collapsed in the USA, Martin Luther King had no weapons, the same thing is happening. There is a superior force fighting for us in heaven, Chukuokike Abiama, the Almighty God in heaven is fighting. This is His battle, it is not Nnamdi Kanu or IPOB’s battle. God is fighting His battle for us. Have you ever heard of earthquake in Nigeria? It happened in 2016 in the North when I was arrested; have you heard of locusts swarming everywhere and damaging crops before? These are plagues of biblical proportion and it is just a warning, a tester of what is to come. What I represent is greater than who I am and the God that we worship, Chukuokike Abiama is about to make manifest that the whole world may know that Biafra is very special, exceptionally special and there is nothing any man can do, absolutelynothing.
You said God gave you a message for the Igbo, can you share the message with us?
That Biafra is coming and that we must remain very strong and resolute. The only thing He requires of us is to worship Him, that’s all He wants us to do and not to worship idol and Biafra will come and the world will see and will testify it. The Igbo should turn away from idolatry and face God and Him alone, that’s the message he said I should give my people. Whatis delaying Biafra is that the people have not turned away totally from worshipping idols. I will be going to Arochuwku to build a temple there and we’ll worship God how it used to be. There was a time God loved us, we used to obey Him by going to Arochukwu to offer Him sacrifice. We started suffering as soon as Arochukwu failed, because the people dabbled into idolatry.
You said you would visit Lagos and Kaduna in no distant time. Don’t you feel for your security?
I have a lot of friends in Lagos and Southern Kaduna too. When the time comes, I will visit those places. You spoke about my security, but I’m telling you that I’m not living any more.What you are seeing is but an empty shell that is only seeking for Biafra.
You keep saying that all you think about is Biafra, but MASSOB founder, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike once said that you do n’t know anything about Biafra. What’s your reaction?
Isn’t it very sad that the only way he could attract attention to his publication was by mentioning the name Nnamdi Kanu? That’s how low he has sunk. Uwazuruike went further in the interview to say that I’m calling for the boycott of Anambra election to help APC win the election. But I want to tell him at various times I have been accused of supporting virtually every political party in the country and every major player. He knew that as a democrat, as a Biafran at heart that how you kind of moderate views and emotions within a society is to ventilate them and allow people to say what they want; that the reason we have the National Assembly is not to make laws only. You create room for people with diverse views and opinions and ideas. It’s better they are ttalking than fighting, that’s why you have parliament, people don’t know that.
I heard that he equally said that if I need money that I should come to him, but what Uwazuruike has refused to know is that I am not a money monger like him; we are not the same. All he thinks about is money, but I think about Biafra and that’s the huge difference. He has been abandoned by his slave masters, the Hausa/Fulani he has been serving so diligently for many years. The wool has fallen off the eyes of our people; everyone knows he is a fraud. What am I doing with money? If I were looking for money, I would have settled with the Buhari government. I don’t need money, the only thing I need is Biafra, Uwazuruike cannot do what I did, he can never do nothing in a billion years. Now, I’m very glad that he has seen that all the money he made,is worthless because he has lost his reputation, he has no name to fall back to. People give me stuff, the cars I use, people gave them to me. I don’t buy anything, so, what do I need money for? I don’t need to buy anything, the furniture in my house, people built them for me. I am serving my people everyday and today we have honour and prestige because of IPOB. It’s notonly our people, every other component ethnic nationality, is rising up to speak because of IPOB. If I had compromised, do you think they would have the courage to rise up? It’s called honour and integrity and Uwazuruike has got none.
