Traditionally the Out Going Gov. Chooses the Next Gov. in Enugu – Sen Nnamani

Former Governor of Enugu State and Senator representing Enugu East in the Senate, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani has reiterated that it is the prerogative of the state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to produce his successor without challenges.

This he said was in line with the precedent for the incumbent governor of the state to determine his successor at least since 1999.

Senator Nnamani said in Abuja that “We have a tradition in Enugu State politics. The governor is the leader who directs affairs. He will determine who succeeds him without compromising the electoral processes and whomever he chooses will be our next governor.

I have absolute loyalty and respect for my governor who is also the leader of Ebeano political family . He has demonstrated capacity and leadership. We are waiting for him to lead the way to go in 2023 and we shall follow”.

Enugu State is among the few in the country that enjoys political harmony on account of adherence to zoning or rotation of key political offices in the three senatorial districts especially the governorship seat since 1999.

Senator Nnamani from Enugu East was the state governor from 1999 to 2007, Sullivan Chime from Enugu West took over from 2007 to 2015 while the incumbent governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi from Enugu North is expected to complete the cycle in 2023.

It is expected that the governorship slot returns to Enugu East for the second round of the rotation in 2023.

Senator Nnamani said he was excited by the political developments in the state where accomplished sons and daughters are showing interest in the politics of the state and prayed that the best amongst them emerges as governor in 2023.

He stated: “Virtually all the aspirants belong to the Ebeano political family. One hundred percent of them are my primary, secondary and by-products. Some may have close affinity with me which explains the understandable speculations on whom I may be supporting. But it is the governor that will choose his successor. The political machinery in the state including the Ebeano family will be rolled out to support whomever he chooses.

He advised those fanning the embers of war to sheathe their swords “because there is no war to be fought. We are one family, whomever emerges will be governor for all.

“No matter the machinations, conspiracies and subterfuges over the governorship primary of our party, we will have a successful transition under the leadership and guidance of our governor.

It is understandable that some of those who are posturing are seeking for relevance or seeking for political appointments in other parties. That is the beauty of democracy, he said.

Senator Nnamani reiterated that he has forgiven all those who may have wronged him in the past saying “I harbour no grudges against any one. I have no fears or concerns about anyone. That era is confined to the dustbin of history. We are moving forward as one family for greater Enugu State”.

AFCON: Anything Buhari Touch Never Flys – Sani

Senator Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, has taunted the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), saying like the pigeons he touched in 2021, the Super Eagles of Nigeria failed to fly after he held a video conference with the team on Sunday shortly before the match with Tunisia.

The ex-lawmaker said this in a cryptic tweet on Monday, noting that Buhari’s only miracle is his rice pyramid.

“He toucheth the pigeon, it refused to fly. He talketh to the Eagle, it refused to fly. Oh yea brethren, thy King in Egypt hath no miracles but pyramids,” he tweeted.

In January 2021 during the Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony, the doves, otherwise known as white pigeons, released by the President had refused to fly despite multiple attempts by the President thereby sparking a debate on social media.

This elicited reactions from Nigerians, some of whom described the incident as a “bad sign” but presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, had said the doves refused to fly because they had been kept captive for a while before the day.

The Eagles had won all their three matches at the group stage in the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon but lost to Tunisia on Sunday in the Round of 16.

Shortly before the game with Tunisia, Buhari held a video conference with Coach Austin Eguavoen from the Presidential Villa, Abuja, urging the team to “keep doing the country proud” but the Eagles were kicked out of the tournament hours later.

Activist Omoyele Sowore, amongst others, had since said the President transferred ‘bad luck’ to the Super Eagles through his video call to the team.

Also, an ex-goalkeeper, Peterside Idah, said on Monday that the constant calls and promises of cash rewards from top government functionaries and prominent Nigerians distracted the Super Eagles which contributed to their ultimate defeat and exit from the Africa Cup of Nations.

AIG Decorate SP Nkeiruka Nwode Of Zone 13 And Others

Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 13, Umar Muri, on Friday, decorated the newly promoted police officers attached to the Anambra and Enugu commands.

The AIG, at the event held at the Zone 13 headquarters in Ukpo, Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State, was assisted by the Commissioners of Police covering the two states.

Among the police officers decorated were the Chief Security Officer, Enugu Government House, DCP Fidelis Ogarabe, and the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nkeiruka Nwode.

Muri, in his opening remarks, reminded the newly promoted officers of the need to always discharge their duties in line with the relevant laws and regulations guiding the operations of the police.

He warned that on no account should the officers use their positions to oppress their junior colleagues or the public whom they’re meant to serve and protect.

The AIG, who commended the Inspector General of Police for his efforts targeted at repositioning and rebuilding the image of the police force, said that the zonal command would stop at nothing in its efforts to always protect lives and property in the two states.

“You’re senior police officers. Your juniors are expected to copy from you. So, there is a need for you to always be very clean, either in uniform or off uniform. You have to respect yourselves so that your subordinates can respect you”, Muri advised.

Anambra : We will advertise for problem solvers to work for Anambra pro bono – Soludo

Anambra State Governor-elect, Prof Chukwuma Soludo has inaugurated the 80-man transition committee assembled by him for the transition of the current state government, as his swearing-in on March 17 draws near.

The former Central Bank Governor said he is very optimistic that he will hit the ground running while stating that he would stop at nothing to ensure that the Anambra people who overwhelmingly voted him into power are not disappointed.

He also stated that part of the task of the transition committee would be to draw a pool of resource persons, from where the government would pick capable hands to help it drive its policies.

The former Central Bank Governor while inaugurating the committee said: “This is an assemblage of the people I describe as wise men and women who have kindly accepted to pay to serve our homeland, under the leadership of one of Anambra’s finest gift to the world, our own dear Oby Ezekwesili. This committee comprises some of Nigeria’s best, and Anambra is deeply grateful that you are sacrificing your time and talent pro bono, to help our journey to a liveable and prosperous smart city.

“This is a friendly transition, it is an APGA government to APGA government, and we expect nothing except the level of cooperation expected among members of a family. And that we are having this at this transition committee jointly, being inaugurated, speaks eloquently. It is almost like a combined transition committee and it is a testimony that this is a family affair.

“Some commentators have observed that the number of the transition committee is large in their estimation, even without seeing the terms of reference, or the task, or that the members are offering their time and talent without remuneration as it were.

“Some were already computing the amount of money that each of you would be paid. If Anambra accepts to pay or remunerate the calibre of people here, I’m sure even a world bank facility would not help us. Despite those observations, I must advise that you should feel absolutely free to bring anyone else that you feel can bring great value to this work.”

Speaking on security, Soludo said he has great plans for security, but stated that it was intentional that he left out security experts in his committee, saying that security is a great challenge in Nigeria today and would not be discussed in the open.

“We deliberately left out some experts in security from the transition committee. We prefer to deal with this subject matter separately. I’m not sure that would fit into this kind of place. What we will say in public is not what we will say in private, because things are no longer the same any longer in Security.”

On terms of reference, Soludo said: “The global objective of the transition committee is to help the government and the governor-elect to achieve a seamless transition and we are ready to hit the ground running from day one. The task would be elaborated, but three stand out.

“First is to ascertain, certify the state of affairs, the short to medium term deliverables of the vision 2070. To propose actionable agenda for the next administration, three to assist with a talent hunt to populate the Anambra change data bank.

“To achieve this, we will soon advertise for expression of interest, whereby we call on all problem solvers with integrity, competence and passion to indicate which problem or problems they can solve for Ndi Anambra, whether in full time, part-time or pro bono services. Together with the talent hunt from the committee, we will then have a robust pool to ensure we continuously fit round pegs in round holes.

“We are open to seeking help and we will deeply appreciate advice and assistance of everybody to enable us deliver efficient and effective services to millions of our people.

“While we will continue to be sensitive to politics, in a democracy, that is expected, we also know that the teeming millions just want public service to work and do not care who delivers them.

“There are several members of this committee who I have never met, but your worth and reputation found you. We are deeply grateful to all of you who have accepted to actually pay to serve. Some are even in opposition parties, but let me say that sound ideas and implementation have no political party badge or state of origin.

“We envision an Anambra that will be the preferred destination in West Africa to live, learn, work, relax and enjoy, and we will welcome any and every contribution to make this work. Of course, Anambra is a state in the South East and is not an island unto itself, so we will seek the cooperation and collaboration of other states, especially South-East and South-South states, this will be critical for creating this prosperous homeland.

“The times are hard and the immediate future will be challenging. Despite this, Ndi Anambra expect extraordinary outcomes, and literarily expect miracles, and we can’t let them down and no excuses will do.

“We are determined to give it our all, mobilizing the creative resources of our people all over the world to create a befitting homeland. It is our collective dreams and assignment. Given the pool of human resources in this transition committee, Anambra people will expect an exemplary report, a very illuminating one. I’m looking forward to using the report of this committee as a template to operate from day one,” Soludo said.

Anambra : Soludo Rejects ”His Excellency” Title

The Governor – elect of Anambra State- Prof Chukwuma Soludo  has  shocked the transition committee members today during inauguration at Agulu that the title ” Excellency” belongs to God as he is never perfect. The revolutionary Governor -elect advised his Team that he would want to be addressed as ” Charlie Nwamgbafor”  .

” Where charlie Nwamgbafor is too difficult to pronounce and you want to be formal ,please address me as Mr Governor” Soludo told members of Anambra Transition Committee.

Details of the inauguration will be shown on BVI Channel 1

Anambra : I Will Start Working From My Inauguration Venue– Soludo

Anambra State Governor-Elect, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, on Thursday, said that there won’t be fanfare during his inauguration on March 17. He said that funds for such would be used to address more important development issues in the state.

Soludo made it clear that he had adopted an open governance model that would guarantee transparency and accountability to Ndi Anambra; insisting that his administration would not waste the state’s resources on jamborees.

The incoming governor bared his mind during the inauguration of his 80-man transition committee led by Mrs Obiageli Ezekwesili at Golden Tulip Hotel, Agulu in Anaocha Local Government Area of the state.

The former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor said that he would move from the inauguration venue to his office and from there to the slums in Onitsha and environs particularly Okpoko community where he plans to clean up.

He said that those who would be appointed into the government must be ready to work as “there is no time to waste”, saying that he was determined to revamp Anambra’s economy and place the state on the global map.

“I’ll be heading to Okpoko immediately after the inauguration. I’ll put in eight hours of work immediately after the inauguration. Don’t expect fanfare because it won’t take place”, he stated.

Soludo promised to finish the works started by the outgoing Governor Willie Obiano and then initiate new ones; adding that he would source for competent hands that would help to develop the state irrespective of where they come from.

“If a Pakistani will give us 24 hours of electricity, I will bring him and make him commissioner for utilities. What the people care about is the services they get and not necessarily who did it. We want to get good results here. What matters is the result. Accountability is a must here”, Soludo declared.

NEC Recommends N302 per Litre Fuel Price by February

The federal government may increase the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), better known as petrol, to N302 per litre in February 2022 as part of the recommendation of the National Economic Council (NEC) in November 2021, TheCable reports.

According to the news platform, this is part of the government’s plan to fully deregulate the PMS prices, eliminating monthly subsidy payments with provisions to ensure fair competition in the market.

The recommendations were put forward by the NEC ad-hoc committee interfacing with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on the appropriate pricing of PMS in Nigeria. The report was presented by Nasir El-Rufai, governor of Kaduna state and head of the committee.

The committee was established last year by NEC headed by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo to look into the dwindling revenues of states.

Other members of the committee include Godwin Obaseki, Kayode Fayemi, and David Umahi, governors of Edo, Ekiti and Ebonyi states respectively; as well as Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN); and Mele Kyari, group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC); Zainab Ahmed, minister of finance, budget and national planning.

In May 2021, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) had also recommended N385 per litre — but stakeholders, including the federal government, rejected the recommendation.

The recommendation has since been reconsidered and dropped by the committee.

According to the new report, the committee recommended full deregulation of PMS prices by February 2022 — raising the price by about N130/140 per litre.

It also recommended that all retailers should post PMS prices at all times on a designated website and smartphone app — and they are expected to post price changes no earlier than within 15 minutes of the price change.

With the recommendations, the committee added that the federal government would save N250 billion per month on petrol subsidy removal.

At current rates, the PMS subsidy is reducing transfers into the federation by about NGN 250 billion per month, and could, if PMS subsidies are not eliminated, result in deductions of NGN 3 trillion in 2022,” the committee’s resolution reads in part.

“The large-scale time-limited (6-months) cash transfer proposed as a way of transferring the subsidy “directly to the people” would cost N600 billion but would by paving the way for the elimination of PMS subsidies, enable the federation to recover N3 trillion in revenues that would otherwise go to PMS subsidies.

“If PMS subsidies are eliminated by February 2022, N250 billion in deductions would have been incurred, but the remaining N195 billion in anticipated PMS subsidy deductions could be redirected towards FGN funding of the cash-transfer programme.”

The NEC committee also recommended a market-based pricing mechanism, as another option, that would ensure petrol price ceilings at least once a month.
