Election Boycott: An Open Letter To Mazi Nnamdi Kanu
Nigeria Army Denies Attacking and Killing IPOB Members
The Nigerian Army has denied the alleged killing and abduction of members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Owerri, Imo State, and Aba, Abia State.
IPOB had alleged that soldiers in the ongoing Operation Python Dance 3 in the areas killed some of its members and arrested some others.
Deputy director, army public relations, 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, Col. Sagir Musa, denied the allegation in a statement, saying no IPOB member was manhandled, shot, wounded, abducted or killed by soldiers in the states mentioned or in any other state of the South East geopolitical zone.
“As a professional and responsible organisation, the Nigerian Army, under the leadership of Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, has variously and sufficiently (both in deeds and actions) made it clear that it will not encourage or condone any form of professional misconduct, especially human rights abuses.
“In the same vein, the Nigerian Army will not ordinarily join words with an illegal organisation, but just to set the record straight against the kind of divisive, selfish and wicked propaganda and misinformation mischievously being perpetrated by the proscribed IPOB.
“The army ably represented by the 82 Division in the South East, will continue to protect the lives and properties of all Nigerians in the zone and is determined to ensure peaceful and secure conduct of free, fair and credible 2019 general election.
“For awareness and further clarification, civilians are not detained in conventional army detention centres, except under exceptional situations such as on charges of terrorism, insurgency or any form of armed insurrection, among others. So, anyone arrested by the army during the ongoing Exercise Egwu Eke III has been handed over to the civil police for further necessary action,” Musa said.
He urged members of the public to disregard any form of divisive and inciting propaganda, particularly the ones coming from the likes of miscreants and outlawed organisations like IPOB.
Meanwhile, IPOB has again raised the alarm over the clampdown on its members by security agents. The group made an appeal to Israel and other world governments to prevail on the Nigeria government to stop killing its members as well as other Biafran agitators who visited Nigeria before Christmas and beyond from different countries.
A statement by the media and publicity secretary of IPOB, Emma Powerful, alleged that Biafrans abroad were humiliated and hunted down in their respective families and communities, especially since Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB leader snapped pictures with Israeli national coordinator and other members in Israel, their families were under serious attack by Department of State Service and other security operatives.
The pro-Biafra group appealed to Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to intervene and save the lives of Augustine and family, as well as other members in Israel.
He said the appeal had become necessary following “reports that some of our members seeking refuge in some foreign countries face threats because of their involvement in the struggle for Biafra freedom.”

General elections: US envoy tasks Nigerian religious leaders on nonviolence
The United States’ Ambassador at-Large for International Religious Freedom, Samuel Brownback, has called on religious leaders in Nigeria to send out clear messages against violence during the upcoming general elections.
Brownback, who gave the advice at a news conference on International Religious Freedom, said the whole world was watching the Nigeria’s general elections scheduled for February 16 and March 2.
He said: “My advice to religious leaders is to suggest to everybody for there to be a calm election, a peaceful election, and no violence in the election.
“And I would ask all the religious leaders in Nigeria to put that message out: that people get out and vote, but that it be calm and peaceful and no violence.
“That this is a right that everybody in Nigeria has to vote.
“It should be exercised, but it shouldn’t be something that people then are threatened with violence or deadly force in various places, and the religious leaders have a role to play and a strong role to play asking for people to do this election peacefully.
“The world is watching. Nigeria is an important, incredibly important country, and it’s important throughout the world. It’s certainly a key country in Africa.
“And what you do on having a peaceful election cycle is an important thing for the progress in Nigeria.
“And the religious leaders should be just adamant about that this must be peaceful. We do these things peacefully and we showcase that to the world”.
Brownback said he was in Nigeria for several days a few months ago, travelling particularly in the middle belt but also in the south of Nigeria adding, “I tracked the situation very closely”.
“The United States Government is strongly concerned that there be free and fair elections, and that they be safe elections – that the factions vote, but not attack each other.
“And that the government itself that’s in power now do everything they can to protect the people, to make sure that they’re safe,” he said.
He noted that the discussions Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari held with American President Donald Trump, when the former visited the White House in 2018.
“And so we – our focus is that they be free and fair elections, and that they be safe, and that every effort be made to make sure that people are safe in these elections as they come up,” he said.
Brownback said the United States had been working to establish a religious roundtable in Nigeria.
“We have a religious freedom roundtable here, and we’re taking that concept on a global basis and asking all different faiths, or people of no faith at all but that are interested in religious freedom, to join these religious freedom roundtables, to push for religious freedom and respect for all faiths in those countries.
“The first one of those has been held in Nigeria now, and it brought together people of various faith persuasions and free thinkers as well, and it was on the topic of, what can we all do to push together for religious freedom, for respect of each other’s religion, and for the safety and security of the people that practice their faith.
“That’s gotten started; it’s just getting going.
“But it’s our hope that some of these can take place in many places around the world because of the need, really, to expand religious freedom and the protection for all people of faith wherever they are,” he said.

President Muhammadu Buhari, the candidate of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), and former vice President Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of the major opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, as well as candidates of other parties, on Wednesday, signed the second peace accord aimed at having a peaceful election.
The signing ceremony is set to take place at the International Conference Centre Abuja.
The chairman of the national peace committee, former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar said the committee decided to organise the peace accord signing in order to ensure a peaceful conduct for all elections in the country.
The Presidential and the National Assembly elections hold this Saturday, February 16th, while that of governors and members of state Houses of Assembly hold on March 2, 2019.
Abdulsalami in his welcome remarks said elections will not hold in the absence of peaceful atmosphere, noting that even governance after election will not be peaceful without a peaceful environment.
“Don’t make anything to make a bad situation worse,” he said.
The former head of state said disharmony among political parties retards Nigeria’s development.
“Without cooperation among political parties, we are going nowhere,” he said.
The former head of state reminded the presidential candidates that by signing the peace accord, they are committing themselves to ensuring a peaceful election in Nigeria.
According to him, mere signing of the peace accord will not achieve the required objective “unless all other actor are forced to work with the same rules”.
Abdulsalami regretted the spread of misinformation in the nation’s Mosques and Churches and urged that “this must be contained”.
In his remarks, the former head of state, Yakubu Gowon, also urged the candidate to tell Nigerians who are their supporters to ensure peaceful conduct during the elections so that in the future, there may be no need for foreign observers because the right conduct would have been assured.
“May the winner be as dictated from above,” he said.
In her remarks, the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Patricia Scotland said that millions of people across the world are praying for Nigeria and its people hoping that the forthcoming election will hold peacefully.
She noted that Saturdays election will be the sixth since 1999 when the country returns to democracy after military rule.
She said she was hopeful that the poll will entrench and build on the gains achieved since 1999.
Scotland said for those born after 1999, this year’s election will be the first time to exercise their right and determine who rules Nigeria.
She said all concerned should not fail them by ensuring a credible and transparent election.
She said the signing ceremony holding today is fully in line with commonwealth values.
She said the world is holding their breath because Nigeria is the largest economy with the largest population.
She said what happens in Nigeria affects all and that she was hopeful that accord will be lived up to in the coming days and beyond.
“It is a burden that Nigerian leaders gathered here today carry.
“We call on their party, supporters and public to follow their lead.
“Elections will come and go, but this great Nigeria will remain,” Ms Scotland said.
The event is also being attended by several top traditional rulers and other notable citizens from Nigerian and outside.
Among those attending the event are Former Liberian President, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, who is leading the ECOWAS observer mission, a former President of Tanzania, Jakaya Kikwete, who heads the Commonwealth observer mission and
Festus Moghai a former President of Botswana who is heading the Democratic National Institute and Republic National Institute.

The call to clampdown on IPOB during this general election do not go down well with Igbo nation.
It is a delibrate attempt to intimidate, harass, or even kill South Easterners who have demonstrated in clear terms their total disapproval with the current APC government.
The endorsement of Atiku/Obi in this election by major fronline Pan Igbo Social Cultural organizations is not going down well with the APC led Federal Government. Thus, they intend to use IPOB Election Boycott stance as a ploy to indimidate, harass, or even kill South Easterners during the upcoming 2019 Nigeria general election.

2019 Polls: El-Rufai defends position on foreign interference
|
The Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has denied calling for violence in his comments about foreign interference. In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Samuel Aruwan, El-Rufai explained that his comment was not a call for violence but rather a powerful defense of sovereignty. He further explained that he is standing firmly against those trying to divide Nigerians on ethnic and religious lines, and is opposed to violence but firmly committed to peace and harmony. The statement read in part, “He stood up for Nigeria’s dignity in the wake of those who would traduce their country and reduce it to the status of a colony in their vain quest for power. “The video of his comments is in circulation. Any fair-minded person with modest familiarity with the English language and unimpaired comprehension can understand it. It does not contain any call for violence. “It is a powerful defense of sovereignty. Are some sections of our political class implying that they will acquiesce in or collaborate with foreign intervention in our country? “Non-interference in the affairs of other countries is a basic principle of international law. Threatening to intervene in another country implies the use of force. Those who are basing their electoral calculations on foreign intervention need to be discouraged. Only the lawful votes of the Nigerian people should make or unmake governments”. Governor El-Rufai in an interview on NTA’s Tuesday Live had said that those who attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of the country would return to their countries in body bags. According to Aruwan, such statements are what one should expect to hear from a patriot. •Sourced from a Channels TV report |

Ohanaeze Berates Buhari Over Police Posting
|
The current postings by the Police Service Commission, PSC, has once more vindicated the position of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide on the mindless victimisation and marginalization of Ndigbo by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government.
A cursory look at the list of the newly-posted Commissioners of Police to States throughout the country indicates the obvious lopsidedness in both the number of Ndigbo affected and their states of posting.
The whole of the seven Igbo-speaking states in the country has only two Commissioners of Police while some single states have two or more and some geopolitical zones more than six or seven.
President Buhari came on campaign to Anambra State and insulted Ndigbo by saying that his postings were based on merit and that is why the South East zone is completely absent in the security apparatchiks of the contntry.
In otherwords, no Igbo man or woman is intelligent or brilliant enough or has his confidence to head any of the security apparatus of Nigeria, and to butress his point, only two Igbo officers are “meritorious” to be appointed Commissioners of Police in charge of States.
To further rub it in,the only two are posted to the most hazardous war-torn areas of the north –Zamfara and Borno States.
It is worthy to note that Ndigbo have always formed the majority of soldiers posted to these war zones and have paid their dues including producing a worthy General Officer Commanding troops and who distinguished himself there.
What have Ndigbo done to this administration to deserve this illtreatment? The Nigeria/Biafra War ended nearly fifty years ago.Why the continued marginalization?
This kind of discrimination should not be lost on Ndigbo, especially at this period of reckoning and payback.
It would be remembered that two brilliant Deputy Inspectors General of Police were recently retired by this administration to pave way for the appointment of the current Acting Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.
If Mr president loves Ndigbo as he is canvassing, why didn’t he try to balance the glaring absence of Ndigbo at a table where the security of this country is decided?
Ndigbo shine your eyes! Shine your eyes and vote wisely.
Chief John Nnia Nwodo
President General Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.
