PDP Condemns Buhari “shoot at Sight”

The National Chairman,  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive to security agencies to shoot at sight anyone found snatching ballot box as a declaration of war on Nigerians.

Secondus, in a statement by his media aide, Ike Abonyi, claimed going by the directive, leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been empowered to move about with the military at their respective constituencies.

He said this will enable them   harass and intimidate staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)  and the opposition agents, so as to scare them away and create avenues for thugs to replace result sheets.

The PDP chairman noted that  President Buhari has never been sincere in conducting a free and fair election, stating that  it was the reason  he  refused  to sign the amended Electoral Act which would have facilitated a credible polling in the country.

“The president’s confirmation that he has directed the service chiefs to kill Nigerians is nothing but a pre-determined script hatched by the ruling party to create voter apathy and implement their result replacement plans using thugs protected by the military.

“In all democracies world over, elections are civil matter that is usually handled by civil security like Police and wondered why the involvement of our military in this matter when they have enough security challenges to tackle. “

He said it was shocking that a president that has failed to take action in the numerous security challenges in the country, particularly  in Benue, Plateau, Zamfara among others, would be threatening voters.

Also reacting, the party, said the directive to security agents was a direct call for jungle  justice.

The opposition party, in a statement by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, stated that the Presidency and the APC were plotting to trigger widespread political crisis, so as to  derail the democratic process and  plunge the country into anarchy.

The party noted that President Buhari’s directive “is indeed a license to kill, which should not come from any leader of any civilized nation.”

The opposition party added that it hoped President Buhari’s directive to security agencies is not  a camouflage for the fake soldiers allegedly mobilized by the APC to shoot at innocent Nigerians, snatch ballot boxes and execute their rigging plans on the election day.

“President Buhari must however bear in mind that his resort to threats and scaremongering will not deter Nigerians from coming out en-masse to vote him out of office on February 23. ¡¡We are aware that President Buhari, who had earlier boasted that nobody can ‘unseat’ him, is bent on using every dictatorial and tyrannical act to truncate the process of a free, fair and credible election.”

Breaking News: Buhari Orders the Arrest of INEC Staff Today- CUPP

PDP Writes INEC : May Boycott 23rd Election

Follow up to questions raised at the INEC Press Conference on 16th February at the ICC.
We would like to pass on our thanks to you and your staff for the robust response to the logistical challenges you faced that led to the election postponement and for explaining the issues as well as your implementation plan to ensure free, fair and credible elections hold on February 23rd and March 9th.
We support your decision to ensure full national elections and resist pressure to implement a partial postponement which would not have been in the best interests of democracy in Nigeria.
On behalf of the PDP and our Presidential Candidate, HE Atiku Abubakar, I would like to follow up on the two questions we raised and the answers you gave.
1. We ask INEC to confirm that Activate Technologies Ltd will have no involvement in the collection and reconfiguration of any card reader when they are taken to state-level to have the new date and time of the 23rd of February election programmed into them?
Your reply did not answer the question so we have to assume this company will.
You  stated that you were aware and have no issue with the fact that Mohammed S Musa is both a Senatorial Candidate and Owner of this company that produces highly sensitive election materials including Card Readers and PVCs.  This goes against every international and Nigerian convention and law of nature – it is the equivalent of letting the fox into the hen coop or getting a student to answer their own homework.
So we have two supplementary questions:
i. Why would you not require an individual who is participating in an election in which he is providing the means to count his own vote demand immediately that his contract is terminated?
ii. Furthermore, in the spirit of transparency that you stated today that INEC works to, why would you hire a company where the owner hides his ownership of the company through proxy shareholders?
2. Will INEC allow independent verification that none of the potentially compromised card readers supplied by Active Technology Ltd in the polling units in the 10 effected States have not been tampered with?
We thank you for agreeing to this and hereby provide two ICT and audit firms who have the expertise to evaluate whether the Card Readers have been compromised. We would be grateful if you could confirm which one is acceptable to INEC and make provision for them to have unfettered access between 18-21st February  as they are brought to CBN offices in the following States to do tests on units selected at random.  We also asked and you agreed whether independent verification that the sensitive materials returned to the CBN offices at State Level have not been tampered with.  We believe it makes sense to appoint one company to verify both issues or on the issue of sensitive materials we can use the Party officials and Observers.
i. KPMG
ii. Price Waterhouse
As promised, I attach the list of Polling Units which have had Card Readers supplied by Activate Technology Limited which we believe may have been compromised to receive multiple fake PVCs, provide slower operation (in PDP strongholds to suppress our vote), count one card multiple times or other such manipulation.  Once the audit firm is agreed we would want to agree their methodology and the minimum number of units to represent a statistically significant number.  Given the short time frame this appointment we believe will need to be made by Monday 18th February.
Finally, in the Press Conference you stated you have evidence of ‘sabotage’ so we would be grateful if you could confirm the specific incidents you have identified?
Affording you my best personal wishes

INEC May lift ban on political campaigns

There are strong indications that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may lift its ban on political campaigns, following the one week postponement of the presidential and National Assembly elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, had, during a meeting with stakeholders in Abuja, last Saturday, insisted that INEC would not lift the ban on campaign even as he quipped that “it is difficult for any political actor to be silent.”

Regardless, reacting to the directive by the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) to its members to start campaigning for the Peoples  Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, National Commissioners and chairman Information and Voter Education committee, Festus Okoye, said a meeting has been scheduled between the commission and stakeholders; to deliberate on the possibility of lifting the ban on campaign.

“We are actually going to meet with stakeholders, to deliberate and take a final decision on the issue,” said Okoye.

Meanwhile, leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has convened a national caucus meeting in Abuja, today, to restrategise for the rescheduled presidential and  National  Assembly elections for this weekend.

Although a short message from the party, announcing the meeting was silent on the agenda, it, however, stated that it will hold at the party secretariat, starting in the early hours of day, unlike previously when it held inside the State House.

In a related development, APC has said the ruling party is more concerned about the electoral commission perfecting arrangements to conduct credible and acceptable polls by the weekend than continuation of political campaign.

Earlier, APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, reportedly told the British Broadcasting Corporation that the party will continue with its campaigns.

Also, the National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, told Daily Sun that “INEC should have their reasons for such decision.

“What is more important to us, in APC, is for the Commission to get itself together and correct whatever that must have led to the postponement.

“The Commission has just few days to ensure that they tidy up  every loose ends so that we can have smooth  and credible elections. We are not concerned about continuing with campaigns but conduct of an acceptable peaceful election this weekend,” he reiterated.
