No ranching in Igboland – Ohanaeze PG

President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, in this interview speaks on various issues affecting the nation; 2019 general elections, restructuring, killings by herdsmen, federal government’s proposed ranching project, alleged padding of 2018 budget and IPOB among others. While expressing fears about next year’s general elections, Nwodo alleged that the ranching project is an explosive ethnic bomb that would finish the country. He vowed that nobody can impose ranching on Igboland.

How do you feel about the state of security in the country?

The security apparatus of the country has failed; its management has also failed. The head of state extended the tenure of service chiefs; and the assumption was that they had done so well; they should continue to be there until their plans firm up and they can choose competent successors. First of all, I am opposed to the extension, and as a lawyer; I see it as illegal and I hope that can be tested in our courts. The civil service is under a law; the law establishing the civil service in Nigeria has tenure for the civil servant; after which he goes on retirement. I don’t know anywhere in the law that provides room for the elongation of a tenure. There is amendment in some states and federal establishments, making allowances for contract employment especially in the universities where professors may retire but they have no replacements in their areas of specialisation and they retain them on contract bases. But on those contract bases, they get less paid than when they were running their tenure and their contract is renewable after a short period; say about two years. I don’t know where a civil servant who has reached retirement can be told to stay in office contrary to the provisions of the law. So, what the head of state has done is illegal; and I am surprised that nobody either in the National Assembly or any of the civil so- ciety organisations has questioned it. Secondly, he has breached the provisions of the National Constitution on the Federal Character in giving the impression that loyalty to the head of state is a function of where he comes from and therefore must determine who is a commander in any of the armed services. It’s a misnomer and runs counter to the necessity of building a united country, which the president must be an embodiment. This country has never been as divided as it is today. The president’s appointments remind people of where they are from; it has negated every advantage that we have acquired over the years in terms of building a united country. Why is it that everywhere; Fulani herders have killed, murdered people in their numbers, the police arrived after; the whole essence of security is prevention, not management of crime after it has happened. An effective security must prevent a crime from occurring; in order words, it must have information, surveillance, it must have capacity to predict what the criminal is likely to do. We look at all these, social media are awash with pictures of Fulani herdsmen with riffles; their faces are there and nobody has arrested any one of them; those who are arrested, no one is prosecuted. You get the impression that it’s a religious war. What on earth justifies herdsmen entering a catholic church while the service is going on and murdering two priests; parishioners and members of the choir? And turning round to wear the uniforms of members of the choir; making songs and caricature of them with all their faces showing, trending on the social media with the entire Nigerian security system seeing them and somebody tells you that this is Libyan inspired.

When did Mammar Ghadaffi die? Any country with an effective security system would say; Ghadaffi is dying with unprotected armoury, people are going to take the arms and percolate around Africa. How have we made our borders secure to ensure that these people do not come in; our borders are the most porous? Evidences are arising from Kano indigenes now that a number of people who are not Nigerians are coming into Nigeria to register for the next election. Where are their addresses? INEC has done an administrative inquiry; fine, but in law you can’t be a judge in your own case. INEC could not have made a mistake, and be the one to investigate its own mistake. It must allow a judicial inquiry and even if its report has not been made public and the social media are replete with permanent voters’ cards showing names and pictures of children; the evidence is already in public domain, and it has not reached government to set up a judicial panel of inquiry; how do you ensure that the coming election is transparent when all the processes leading to it are not transparent. The weight of the arguments and the fact that these matters are in public domain is enough for government to say justice must not only be done but seen to be done; let there be a judicial panel of inquiry on every infraction that has been complained about in the registration of voters. So, that we remove the iota of doubt in the mind of every Nigerian as to the election we are going into. Right now, Goggle has developed a technology by which you can count people without necessarily asking them to go to the PVC centre; to do an aerial counting meaning that the population of Nigeria can be done through aerial counting. Our National Population Commission has never been allowed to tell us the population of each ethnic origin; why? We’ve never been told how many Christians and Muslims exist in Nigeria because it’s not one of the things to be enumerated in a population headcount; why? But we knew that when the British were doing our headcount and the population headcount you have now, the figures are inconsistent with the figures of the British Government even on a projected bases using growth trends in world demographic statistics.

So, everyone laughs at us. Even children enrolments in schools do not reflect the demographic pattern given to certain areas of the country. Our population headcount is fake; it’s unverifiable and so will our voters’ registration be unless there is judicial inquiry into these processes that sanitise the system.

Do you think any other president of northern origin can restructure the country?

Restructuring has ceased to be the views of one section of the country. There are northerners in the middle belt who believe in restructuring; there are northerners not from the middle belt like Atiku Abubakar; President Ibrahim Babangida who believe in restructuring. Restructuring is not a sectional ideology; it’s the only way to give birth to a productive, united and more prosperous Nigeria; without it, Nigeria is stillborn. Do you realise now that what we pay as interest of nearly $20billion that we have as external loans is more than what we generate as taxation as a nation. We pay 40 per cent of our GDP in retirement of external loans and it is at a growing trend. Right now, America has upped its interest rate; there is a forum of mass withdrawal of investments in our business cycle in search of greater interest rate in America. What it’s going to do is that if nothing happens to shore up; thank God there is artificial rise in price of crude oil but that is likely to fall because America is fighting and OPEC has just agreed to lower their prices. So, this increase thing is a short term thing. When there is a foreign flight of capital, what will happen is that the price of the Naira will weaken in competition for the dollar because the amount of dollar flowing into our country is severely limited. So, it will be based on the dollar that we earn from our exports. One expects that the political rhetoric as we go into election should be telling us; how do we get out of it and that’s why we are saying that restructuring is the only way out of it. Restructuring takes our energies back to the productive units in smaller concentrations and independence to make decisions which are all in the province of the federal government. We have an amorphous federal government that does not work

FAAC deadlock: Buhari to decide on NNPC – Adeosun

The Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, has disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari has agreed to take necessary steps to address the issues that deadlocked last Federation Accounts and Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting in Abuja.

She disclosed this after a meeting with Governors Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State, Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa State and Abubakar Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State and the Chief of Staff to the

Adeosun had last week stated that if the issues that led to the deadlock were not resolved, salaries of civil servants might be affected in the states.

The committee members of FAAC had expressed reservations over some of the costs presented by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), saying they could not be justified hence the decision not to approve the accounts.

The revenue sharing meeting had ended in a deadlock on Wednesday last week for the third time since March 2018.

Speaking on the outcome of the meeting, Minister of Finance said, “well, as you know, last FAAC meeting ended in deadlock and since then we have been having series of engagements between ourselves, the governors, the commissioners and, of course, various stakeholders. Today’s meeting was for me to brief the governors and the Chief of Staff and by extension, Mr. President, on the progress we have made so far on our position. Mr. President has promised to take the next step and to that extent, we are very satisfied.”

Asked why the issue with NNPC has remained problematic and if the company is not in the Treasury Single Account (TSA), Adeosun said, “they are. Every agency of government is in TSA. You know FAAC is unique. FAAC is a meeting where all the revenue generating agencies make returns on net of their expenses. It is in the area of deductions where we have disputes. The disputes are not on the gross revenue but on what has been deducted from that gross revenue giving us the net, which is being brought into FAAC. But I think this is a healthy process. We must be satisfied with figures before we sign for them. We must, as stakeholders, make sure all our agencies are aligned with all the programmes of government in terms of getting this economy really moving.

“We are still very much dependent on oil, on NNPC for our revenue, so we do need to have sometimes some of these. I see them more as reconciliations than standoffs. I’m very sure we will have FAAC in the next day or so.”

Yari, for his part, expressed happiness that President Buhari has decided to step in to resolve the issues.

According to him, “there is headway because Mr. President and the Minister of Finance will meet with NNPC officials so that we can resolve the problem with the FAC committee.”

Man sets self ablaze, says hardship in Nigeria too much

A man believed to be in his early 20s Wednesday afternoon, set himself ablaze in the Omole Phase 1 area of Ojodu, Lagos.

The man, whose identity has not be confirmed, was said to had armed himself with a gallon of petrol and lighter and started narrating how Nigerians were going through hardship.

A witness, Ben Chinedu, told Daily Sun that: “I was at the Gate when I saw a crowd and I stopped to make enquiries. I saw a young man in his 20s; he was armed with a gallon of fuel. He was shouting on top of his voice saying that he was tired of life. He narrated how he had been running from one person to other for assistance and everyone was saying things were difficult. He told people who cared to listen that the country was under a spell that cannot be cleansed.

“He said there was no hope and future for the youth, he could no longer bear the ‘suffering-and-smiling’ syndrome and pretence showed by most people. He threatened to kill himself, but people thought he was making empty threats. He poured the liquid on his body and brought out a lighter. He ignited fire on his body and he was burning. We started pouring water on him, but the fire had done enough damage before we put it out. We called the police who came to the scene and picked the man who was unconscious by then. We don’t know the man and where he came from.”

Police public relations officer, CSP Chike Oti, who confirmed the story, said the man was being treated at the Lagos State Emergency Centre, 7-Up area.

Oti said: “Divisional Police Officer, Ojodu, received a distress call that a man set himself ablaze and raced to the scene with some officers. When the police arrived, they put out the fire and rushed the man to the Lagos State Emergency Centre, where he is being treated. The man is still unconscious as he received third-degree burns. He is still unconscious as I am talking to you, but the Commissioner of Police has directed the DPO in charge of Ojodu to take the man who attempted suicide to the hospital.

“it is a suicide attempt as people saw him set himself ablaze. It was not the usual jungle justice by a mob.

“He was the person who planned how to kill himself. The CP has ordered the DPO to investigate and find out who the man is and why he decided to take his life in a most agonising manner. We also call on members of the public who are looking for their missing relations to contact the Ojodu Police Station of the PPRO’s office to ascertain who the man is.

APC CRISIS: Buhari In Trouble!

A new faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged in Abuja. The new faction is named Reformed-APC (R-APC) with Buba Galadima appointed as the Chairman. The new faction is made up of aggrieved members of the APC, mostly from the National Assembly.

Briefing journalists after their meeting at the Sheraton Hotels in Abuja on Wednesday, the chairman, Galadima, said the new faction was formed due to the failure of the APC.

They described APC as “severely under-performing and unable to meet its potentials for good governance.” “We are sad to report that after more than three years of governance, our hopes have been betrayed, our expectations completely dashed. The APC has run a rudderless, inept and incompetent government that has failed to deliver good governance to the Nigerian people.

“It has rather imposed dictatorship, impunity, abuse of power, a complete abdication of constitutional and statutory responsibilities, infidelity to the rule of law and constitutionalism.

“It has failed to ensure the security and welfare of our people and elevated nepotism to unacceptable height. The APC has failed to deliver on its key promises to the nation. There is no evidence of any political will to reverse the decline of our party, while leaders who have created these circumstances continue to behave as if Nigerians owe our party votes as a matter of right.”

Galadima who has previously been critical of the Buhari-led administration added that recently concluded APC ward and state congresses were intensely disputed as it was conducted with “impunity, total disregard for due process.”

Some other members of the R-APC include:

Yobe State – Buba Galadima (National Chairman)

Kano State – Bala Muhd Gwagwarwa (National Deputy Chairman, North)

Galadima, who was secretary of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), President Muhammadu Buhari’s former party further lamented that the APC administration has been “a monumental disaster, even worse than the government it replaced.”

He noted that the party is in turmoil as there are countless cases in courts all over the country challenging the legality of congresses and even the National Convention.

He highlighted that the friction in the APC resulted in parallel congresses in 24 States namely: Abia, Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Enugu, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Niger, Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto and Zamfara.

Orlu Senatorial Aspirant Alleges Threat To Life

A Foremost Runner to Orlu Senatorial Zone -Comrade Precious Nwadike has alleged threat to his life. This allegation was forwarded to BVI Channel 1 online through a press release issued by Comrade Nwadike Campaign Organisation (CONCO) .The press release reads
‘Our attention has been drawn to series of threats to the life of our principal, Comrade Precious Nwadike, which had worsened since he expressed his intention to contest for the Orlu senate seat in the forthcoming general election.
It is on record that our principal is the publisher of Community Watchdog Newspaper that published the story about how a cook attached to the office of the Chief of Staff, government house, Owerri, Mr. Uche Nwosu absconded with a huge sum of money. Shortly after the publication, he was arrested and subsequently arraigned in a magistrate court with charge No. OW/45/IC/2015. Thereafter, they also instituted another case of defamation, with Suit No: HOW/592/2015 against him at an Owerri High Court.
It was at this point, that he approached the courts to enforce his fundamental rights, joining  Uche Nwosu, Imo state Commissioner of Police, Police Service Commission, Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Inspector General of Police as co-defendants in a Suit No: HOW/41/2016. All these matters are still subsisting.
It ,therefore ,baffles our organization that in-spite of these pending court cases, some people have resorted to crude and archaic methods of settling scores. The latest of such threats, happened at exactly 9.45am on Monday, 2nd July, 2018, when our principal visited the Imo state Commissioner for Works, Hon. Josephine Udorji, who invited him for a press briefing. As is well known, our principal is a seasoned journalist and media consultant.
While interacting with the Commissioner in her lounge, in the presence of Ideato South Chairmanship aspirant, Mr. CJK, a lady named Beatrice Onwuzuruike, who had earlier appeared as a prosecution witness in one of the cases but later turned out to be a personal aide of Mr. Pascal Onwukaike, Uche Nwosu’s counsel in the case of defamation at the Owerri high court, walked in, pointed at our principal and said, ““madam, what are you doing with this journalist that has been against my principal. We have been looking for an opportunity to deal with him seriously”. It took the intervention of the Commissioner to calm the situation and avoid unpleasant consequences. When our principal eventually came out, he saw some stern looking young men, suspected to be goons, hired to carry out the hatchet job and he hurriedly left the scene.
We know that our principal, Comrade Precious Nwadike is not a chicken hearted person and will not, for any reason succumb to any form of intimidation or   threat to his life.
However, the campaign organization, wishes to use this opportunity to warn those involved in these clandestine moves and attempts, to desist forthwith, from threatening Comrade Precious Nwadike’s life.
We are committed to introducing a new dawn in the political horizon of our state, hence, the idea of using threats, intimidation and other obsolete methods to scare and silence credible men of goodwill who have the needed capacity to lead from delving into politics are gone and gone forever, in the interest of Imo people.
We also assure the good people of Imo, particularly our Orlu zone that our principal, who is a well known human rights activist, will continue to stand for the voiceless and oppressed.
It is obvious that the publication he made about the gross misuse of the bailout fund was for the interest of suffering Imo civil servants, pensioners and contractors whose monies were captured in the allegedly stolen bailout fund. Besides, he, Nwadike does not have the opportunity of benefiting directly from the stolen fund.
There is therefore, neither retreat nor surrender in the struggle to salvage Orlu people.
We also use this opportunity to inform the general public that those who claim to be mighty and powerful are still committed to impoverishing and enslaving the people and are ready to do anything; including assassination of those whom they feel are not in their fraternity and as such, obstacles to their evil machinations and practices. We urge Imolites and Orlu zone in particular to make good use of the next opportunity, by voting out ineptitude, tyranny and non-performance and enthrone credible candidates, which is what “Our Orlu Project” represents in all ramifications’ The Press release concluded

Get involved in politics, Macron urges Nigerian youths

French President, Emmanuel Macron, has urged Africans to evolve ways of generating a new set of leaders who will take the continent to greater heights.

He said the future of Africa and the task of making it great rest with Africans.

Macron spoke on Tuesday, when he visited the Afrika Shrine, Agidingbi, Ikeja, home of the late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, during an event tagged ‘Celebration of African Culture’ to inaugurate the African Cultural Season 2020,

Accompanied by Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, Macron described the shrine as an iconic centre for the propagation of African culture, strength and music.

The French president, who said he was glad to be back to the Afrika Shrine, since his first visit in 2002, which he still holds fond memories, said only Nigerians can change their image in the comity of nations.

“I am very happy to be here. Let me remind you that this place (Shrine) is a music place as well as for politics, which is needed to change the society, and the youths have a crucial role to play.

“Africa needs a new generation of Africans to share the new narrative about Africa all over the world. Politics is important because it is a tool to change the society. So, I will say to the youths, politics is important, be involved,” he said.

While announcing the launch of the 2020 African Cultures Season in France, he said the event would create a unique face for African culture in Europe, adding that the event would be for Africa and by African artistes.

“It will include people with fashion, African movies, new generation of artistes will be coming from Africa and it will be organised by them to show Europe and France, the real culture of Africa.

“The event will be financed by African leaders. It will not be sponsored by France or European businesses, but by African businesses, it is brand new. This season is a unique one and it will be the new face of Africa in Europe, organised by Africans, providing what you like and what you have here,” he said.

Earlier, Ambode while welcoming Macron to the state, expressed optimism that the historic visit will go a long way to break any barrier between Nigeria and France as well as foster greater collaboration for economic, social and cultural growth.

He said the government is delighted to host Macron, a well respected global leader, adding that it would also signal a new era between both countries, especially for Lagos, where talents in the arts and creative industry abound.

“On behalf of the government and good people of Lagos State, I welcome President Macron to the commercial and cultural capital of Nigeria and, indeed, West Africa.

Meanwhile, former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has described Macron’s visit as “a positive development.”

Obi, who spoke as one of the dignitaries who received the French president at Fela’s Shrine in Ikeja on Tuesday, said he was on the same page with Macron, that for the country to witness the type of political renaissance needed for growth, the youths must ensure they elect only people with track records in management of people and resources.

Reviewing the visit of the French president, Obi described it as a clear evidence that Nigeria still holds a lot of promises among the international communities in spite of its challenges.

Commence impeachment process against Buhari, Court tells NASS

The Federal High Court, sitting in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, has ordered the National Assembly to begin impeachment process against President Muhammadu Buhari.

Justice Maurine Onyetenu gave  the order, on Wednesday,  based on the suit filed by two Nigerians, Kanmi Ajibola, a lawyer and Sulaiman Adeniyi, a rights activist.

The duo had, three months ago, written to both the lower and the upper chambers of the National Assembly on the need to impeach President Buhari, citing alleged constitutional breaches by the president and threatened that they (Ajibola and Adeniyi) would approach the court if they (National Assembly) failed to act accordingly.

But when the lawmakers failed to comply, the duo headed for court and filed a suit at the Federal High Court, Osogbo, asking for an Order of Mandamus to compel both the Senate and the House of Representatives to start impeachment proceedings against the president.

In the suit filed, on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, the Adeniyi and Ajibola hinged their arguments on four grounds as to why the National Assembly should impeach the president.

In the Motion Ex-parte, the duo claimed that in flagrant violation of the 1999 Constitution, President Buhari contested election, won and was sworn in as the president on May 29, 2015, without possessing the basic constitutional requirements, which would have qualified him to  contest for the election.

They further alleged that the 4th Respondent, which is President Buhari, in flagrant violation of section 137 (1) (j) of the 1999 Constitution presented a forged certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the purpose of the 2015 presidential election that brought him to the office of the president

“In the light of the 4th Respondent’s placement to continue in the office as the president, he has no certificate and basic requirements upon which this placement to continue in the office can be placed,” they claimed.

Besides, they accused the president of treating the orders of the court with great disdain and abuses the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria at will, particularly from the angle of the observance of the Federal character as contained in section 14 of the Constitution.

“The 4th Respondent on the 29th day of May 2015, took an oath of office, among others, to the effect that, he would rule in accordance to and protect the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, particularly section 14 (2) (b) which stipulates that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.

“In the contrary, the 4th Respondent has proved to be unable to guarantee the security of lives and property of the citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in fulfillment of his oath of Office.

“The herdsmen killings of innocent citizens under the 4th Respondent have been uncountable, unbearable and unprecedented overheating figures in the globe.

“The 4th Respondent, in contravention of the due process and sections 80 and 81 of the 1999 Constitution, spent about $496 million on the purchase of Tucano Jets without the approval of the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as required by the law.

“The 4th Respondent ordered to be withdrawing money from the public fund of the Federation without the approval of the National Assembly or the authorisation of its act and same used for the purchase of Tucano jets.

“The 4th Respondent has committed several impeachable offences, that is, gross misconduct.

“By the provision of section 143 of the 1999 Constitution, the 1st to 3rd Respondents (The Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the National Assembly) have the statutory duty to impeach the 4th Respondent as the president and Commander-in- Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on gross misconduct.

“The 1st to 3rd Respondents have closed their eyes to the gross misconduct of the 4th Respondent.

The duo told the court that as applicants in the matter, they had the right and duty to compel the 1st and 3rd Respondents to perform their statutory duty of impeachment against the 4th Respondent, having bordered on the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Citing several constitutional authorities in the written address in support of the Motion Ex-parte and with 44-paragraph affidavits, the duo posed some questions by putting Nigeria side by side with some developed nations.

“Can the conduct of the 4th Respondent, particularly on the presentation of a forged certificate, be condoned in America or great Britain unchecked?

“Can the 4th Respondent continue to benefit from his act of forgery and infraction of constitution?

“Definitely, an American president cannot be genuinely accused of presentation of a forged certificate and still be allowed to continue as the president, likewise the Prime Minister of the Great Britain”, they noted.

After moving the application before the court, Barr. Ajibola urged the court that with all array of documents before the it, he was of the view that the National Assembly must perform its constitutional duties without fear or favour.

Justice Onyetenu, in her ruling, granted the application and ordered “That the National Assembly, being the 1st,2nd and  3rd respondents commence the impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari”.

Further hearing of the matter has been fixed for October 30.

BREAKING: Joe Billy Ekwunife Is Dead!

The Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has expressed shock and sadness at the death of the pioneer Managing Director of the Anambra State Investment Promotion and Protection Agency (ANSIPPA) Joe Billy Ekwunife.
In a statement signed by James Eze, his Chief Press Secretary, Governor Obiano revealed that Chief Ekwunife had passed away after a protracted illness at Northridge Hospital, Northridge, California, USA.
Describing the late ANSIPPA CEO as a Great Staff, Governor Obiano stated that the news was bruising to not only the Ekwueme family but equally to the Government and people of Anambra State.
Governor Obiano reckoned that while every death was painful, the passing of Joe Billy Ekwunife had filled him with a deep sense of loss.
Said he: “Who does not know of the phenomenal achievements that Anambra State recorded in local and foreign investments inflow when Ekwunife was the helmsman of ANSIPPA?” Obiano asked, pointing out that it was ironic that Ekwunife’s transition came on the heel’s of a very successful investment tour of Austria.
Admitting that he had great difficulties in speaking of Ekwunife in past tense, Governor Obiano declared that he would forever treasure the memories of his association with the deceased.
He commiserated with the family of the departed ANSIPPA boss on the tragic event and assured them that their sense of bereavement was shared by many.
Obiano further opined that the tribute Ndi Anambra collectively owed the late Ekwunife was to ensure that the dream of a greater Anambra to which he devoted his life does not suffer a stillbirth.
The Governor prayed for the peaceful repose of the soul of the departed and for enough fortitude for the family to bear the loss.

I Support Strong States-Prof Osinbanjo

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Friday advocated stronger and autonomous states in the country’s federal system with some powers devolved to them.He said strong states would help to eradicate poverty in the country.

Osinbajo made the remarks while delivering a lecture at the special parliamentary session in commemoration of the 3rd anniversary of the 8th Assembly of Lagos State House of Assembly held at its hallowed chambers in Alausa, Ikeja.

He spoke on “Strengthening Legislative Institutions: Panacea for Eradicating Democracy.”

The vice-president said: “As against the general belief that the creation of a conducive environment for business by the government for business to thrive to checkmate mass poverty, poverty can be eradicated by having strong states with a strong judiciary, executive and legislature.

“They will in turn channel the resources of the state to creating wealth for the citizens and eradicate poverty.

“The three arms of government in the states must work proactively for the economic development of its citizens.

“To achieve this, there must be devolution of powers to the states to enable them control their resources.”

Osinbajo recalled the feat achieved by the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who as Premier of Western Region, recorded achievements that were acknowledged worldwide and most of which had remained enduring relying solely on revenue from taxes and cocoa.

He said that although he supported devolution of power and restructuring, he believed that even without restructuring it was possible to create a strong state without any major constitutional changes.

He cited how collaboration among the three arms of government in Lagos State right from the administration of ex-Gov. Bola Tinubu to the incumbent (Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode), the state was able to win many cases instituted against the Federal Government at the Supreme Court.

According to the professor of law, this had given more powers to not just to Lagos State but to other states.

“The Lagos Assembly had pushed the frontiers of federalism by passing laws which have strengthened federalism in Nigeria.”

For outstanding economic growth, Osinbajo said there was a need to focus more on education, healthcare and provision of jobs through deliberate programmes and investing more in the sectors for the common good of the people.
