Ohanaeze Ndigbo Endorses Peter Obi for President

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has officially endorsed the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the 25 February general elections.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Chiedozie Ogbonnia, on Tuesday, Ohanaeze said, apart from them, other regional socio-political groups also endorsed Mr Obi during their gathering at Wells Carlton Hotel, Asokoro, Abuja on Thursday.

The other groups which endorsed LP candidate during the gathering, according to the statement, included the Middle Belt Forum led by its president, Bitrus Porgu, the Pan Niger Delta Forum led by Edwin Clarke, the Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, led by Ayo Adebanjo.

Ohanaeze said the groups separately acknowledged that Mr Obi has the needed capacity and competence to rescue Nigeria from its current woes and urged Nigerians to recognise and seize the rare opportunity which the LP candidate has provided.

“In unison, all acknowledged that Obi is the best thing God has done for Nigeria in this century; a game changer, soldier of morals, democracy archetype, the popular sentiment of Nigerian youths, an abundance philosopher, prudent resource manager, ethnic barrier-breaker and a quintessential audacious Igbo icon,” the group said.

It urged Igbos to remember that “politics is not always the art of the possible, but most times the art of choosing between the reasonable alternatives.”

The group suggested that it would be needless and counterproductive for residents of the South-east to continue their agitation against perceived marginalisation of the region and work against the LP candidate ahead of the general elections.

“Now that Nigerians are moving from a winter of despair to a summer of hope, through our son, Mr Peter Obi, is it sensible that agitations based on marginalisation and other forms of relative deprivations should continue?

Is it sensible to turn the barrel of the gun inwards? And is it sensible for any noble Igbo son and daughter to embark on self-destruction such as the sit-at-home syndrome, destruction of public utilities, among others,” Ohanaeze stated.

Ohanaeze said although the group does not “wax eloquent on partisan politics,” it maintains the earlier stand that it is the turn of the South-east to produce a Nigerian president in 2023.

It is to this end, that Ohanaeze insists that going by the political culture of sharing, zoning and rotation of power which have been in existence since the Nigeria came into existence, it is the turn of the South-east to produce a president for Nigeria in 2023,” the group said, insisting that the position is irrevocable.

Ohanaeze criticised what it termed “machinations” by the political parties against the South-east’s chances of producing a president in 2023.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo watched with keen interest, sadness and reproach the bourgeois cash and carry politics, conspiracy, cold intrigues, betrayals, hypocrisy, opportunism and other forms of machinations within the mainstream political parties, against the South-east, even from the least expected,” it said.

Dismissing the taunt that Obi has no structure to win the election, the apex Igbo sociocultural organisation said Obi-Datti movement has metamorphosised into the needed structure to win election.

“Students of political history will readily recall that it is the ideas from gifted men that develop concentrically into ideology, movements, revolutions and finally to a political structure. And today, the Obi-Datti movement has become an enviable irreversible, irrepressible and formidable structure in Nigeria,” Ohanaeze said.

Breaking: Supreme Courts Temporary Stops the Banning of Old Naira Note

The Supreme Court on Wednesday temporarily halted the move by the federal government to ban the use of the old naira notes from February 10, 2023.

A seven-member panel led by Justice John Okoro, halted the move of the federal government in a ruling in an exparte application brought by three northern states of Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara.

The three states had specifically applied for an order of Interim Injunction restraining “the federal government through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) or the commercial banks from suspending or determining or ending on February 10, 2023, the time frame with which the now older version of the 200, 500 and 1,000 denomination of the naira may no longer be legal tender pending the hearing and determination of their motion on notice for interlocutory injunction”.

Moving the application on Wednesday, counsel to the applicants, Mr A. I. Mustapha, SAN, had urged the apex court to grant the application in the interest of justice and the well-being of Nigeria.

He stated that the policy of the government had led to an “excruciating situation that is almost leading to anarchy in the land “.

While he referred to a Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) statistics which put the number of people who don’t have bank accounts at over 60 percent, Mustapha lamented that the few Nigerians with bank accounts can’t even access their monies from the bank as a result of the policy.

The senior lawyer further argued that unless the Supreme Court intervenes the situation will lead to anarchy because most banks are already closing operations.

Delivering ruling in the motion, Justice Okoro, held that after a careful consideration of the motion exparte this application is granted as prayed, “An order of Interim Injunction restraining the federal government through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) or the commercial banks from suspending or determining or ending on February 10, 2023, the time frame with which the now older version of the 200, 500 and 1,000 denomination of the naira may no longer be legal tender pending the hearing and determination of their motion on notice for interlocutory injunction”.

He accordingly adjourned to February 15, 2023 for hearing of the main suit.

He said the deceased was rushed to the General Hospital Amaku where he was confirmed dead by the doctor.

Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Command was yet to receive report of the incident.

But Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, UNIZIK, Chika Ene, confirmed the incident.

She however said she was yet to receive full details of the incident.

Meanwhile, legal practitioners in Imo State on Tuesday protested in Owerri, the state capital, over the killing of the President of Ejemekwuru Customary Court in the Oguta Local Government Area of the state, Nnaemeka Ugboma.

Marching from the Bar centre on Owerri – Orlu Road in Owerri, they demanded an end to incessant killings in the state.

The lawyers dressed in black attires, with a banner and placards with various inscriptions, called for an end to killings in the state.

The chairman of the Owerri Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ugochukwu Allinor, in company of the four other chairmen of the NBA in the state, condemned Ugboma’s killing.

Allinor said the protest was to make the security agents in the state to sit up to their responsibilities.

He urged the government to provide adequate security arrangements at the court premises adding that there was need for all courts in the State to be fenced.

Allinor called on the police to apprehend the gunmen who killed the judge as well as those who beheaded the Sole Administrator of the Ideato North Local Government Area of the state, Chris Ohizu.

Chuks Agbugba, a lawyer, said the killing of the jurist was a threat to justice dispensation in the State.

Another lawyer, Tony Ephraim, said: “We are here to protest the constant killing of lawyers in Imo State and attack on court facilities by gunmen. The other time a former chairman of the bar was killed in his office. A lawyer was also killed in Orlu and now we are talking about the killing of the President of a Customary Court during a court session.”

Enugu 2023: Peter Mbah May Backs Frank Nweke Jr If…

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, Mr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah is currently making a move to support gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the state, Frank Nweke Jr if he loses at the court, Akelicious can authoritatively report.

According to the source, Mbah is making the move in case he did not secure his victory at court.

Justice Folashade Giwa-Ogunbanjo of the Federal High Court sitting in Enugu State has fixed February 15 for ruling on the suit seeking for disqualification of all the PDP candidates in Enugu State from taking part in the 2023 general elections.

In the case instituted by the Enugu North Senatorial district candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chika Idoko, the plaintiff sought for an order of the court to disqualify all the PDP candidates standing for the coming the polls including the state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, for Section 77 of the Electoral Act.

In the suit marked No: FHC/EN/CS/217/2022, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the PDP, and all its candidates in Enugu State were listed as defendants while Idoko was the soul applicant.

He claimed that the PDP primary election was in contravention of Section 77 of the Electoral Act and should thus be voided, adding that the party should be punished in line with extant provisions of the Section 84 of the same Act.

His argument was that the party submitted its membership register to INEC on May 6, 2022, less than 30 days to its primary election, contrary to the provisions of the law.

When the case came on Thursday, all the parties in the suit adopted their process, including preliminary objections and addresses for the substantive suit.

However, after listening to parties arguments on their various positions, Justice Giwa-Ogunbanjo adjourned the suit to February 15 for ruling.

It was reliably gathered that in case of any eventuality, Mbah and his supporters in their plan B have resolved to support the APGA candidate, Frank Nweke Jr, in case the ruling the did not favour them.

According to the source, “I can authoritatively tell you that Mbah has been making secret moves and meeting with APGA leadership and party’s gladiators as a plan B, if he loses in the Febuary 15th, ruling, in order not to loss relevant in the Enugu politics.

“It was further gathered that both parties, APGA and the PDP is just waiting for the ruling to perfect the coalition if the does not favour the PDP, and this happens, it is 100 percent sure that Frank Nweke Jr will easily emerge victorious in the governorship election.

“Nweke Jr has already won the mind of Enugu people through his lofty manifesto and he has already adjudged as the leading candidate among all the governorship candidate in the state.

“And with the plan from PDP to support him, if the party loses at court, this will further boost Nweke Jr chances of ruling Enugu in 2023”, the source authoritatively said.

Latest Online Presidential Poll: Peter Obi wins the entire South, Gains Massive Support in the North

Nigeria’s 2023 Presidential Election is shaping to be an exciting race, with the Labour Party leading with 37%, followed by the PDP with 27% and the APC with 24%, according to the latest poll by Nextier SPD, an African-based international development consulting firm.

The poll, released on Saturday, February 5, 2023, is the second national face-to-face survey conducted by Nextier SPD and shows that a significant percentage of registered voters, 72% have chosen their presidential candidate.

The poll places Peter Obi, the dark horse of the 2023 election, well ahead of his closest rivals, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party and Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress.

According to the most recent Nextier Poll, Peter Obi has the greatest net favorability among the leading presidential contenders. At the same time, among the major political parties, the Labour Party has the greatest net favorability.

According to the firm’s website, Nextier SPD, employs evidence-based research and policy to create and strengthen knowledge and skills for managing society. The organisation released its first poll in November, 2022 and the Labour Party’s presidential candidate emerged as the most preferred. This poll shows Mr Obi has expanded his lead in the race.

In a statement released by the Peter Obi Campaign Organisation, it thanked Nigerians for their continued support leading up to the 2023 Presidential Election.

“It is wonderful to note that the findings of Nextier’s second poll for the 2023 General Elections suggest that the message of hope of our Presidential Candidate, Mr Peter Obi, is resonating strongly with the Nigerian people,” Dr Tanko Yunusa the Chief Spokesperson for the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign Organisation, said in a statement on Sunday, February 5, 2023.

It demonstrates that the efforts of Nigerians from across the nation to take back their country and reshape its character and fortune to benefit all Nigerians are bearing fruit.

“We are delighted that His Excellency, Mr Peter Obi, who is seen as the burden bearer and hope for true change in Nigeria has the greatest net favorability rating among the leading presidential contenders.

“In addition, our great Party, the Labour Party, which was first mocked by institutional demagogues impeding Nigeria’s road to genuine greatness, has been deemed to have the greatest preference across various religious and non-religious groups in the nation.

We are particularly pleased by the findings that reveal that 72 per cent of respondents have already decided on who to vote for, and 77 per cent say that they will vote in the forthcoming election.

“This development is a strong indicator that the Nigerian voter is smart, conscious and actively engaged in changing the future of our nation. It also indicates that the Nigerian people have for long anticipated the emergence of a candidate like Peter Obi blessed with the capacity to bring about real change and good governance for all Nigerians,” he added.

The statement also expressed satisfaction that most Nigerians were concerned about tackling the vexing problems of insecurity, joblessness, bad economy, and institutionalised corruption, to which its Presidential Candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has offered the most straightforward solutions.

The possibility of a runoff between Peter Obi and either Atiku Abubakar or Bola Tinubu as indicated by the Nextier survey was based primarily on the fact that neither contender is projected to achieve the criterion for an outright victory.

According to the survey, only Peter Obi’s Labour Party would be able to accomplish that in 23 states, beating out the PDP and APC.

Other outcomes of the polls were communication channels of choice and the views of Nigerians on the neutrality of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The study found that radio and the social media tool WhatsApp are the most favoured outlets for political parties ahead of Election Day.

It also revealed that 47% of respondents believed INEC would not tamper with the results, while 29% did not, and 23% were doubtful.

GGM Calls For Total Understanding Over Naira And Fuel Crisis

Good Governance Ministry, the first political Ministry in Nigeria pursuing good Governance and public accountability wishes to confirm that the present political class have failed woefully to live up the expectations. Their failures to execute simple public policies that would have solved problems instead of creating suffering and avoidable death is an indication of dearth of ideas .

GGM pleads with the ordinary people to endure the current ugly condition where prices of crude products have climbed to the high heavens in a country that was endowed with abundance oil resources as well as manpower. The CBN decision to redesign naira notes was well intended but poorly executed . Nigeria with a population size of above N200M and with majority unable to use electronic channels to effect financial transactions,CBN should have been proactive in flooding the money market with lower bills months ago. The ordinary people of Nigeria should not be exposed to the current suffering because of well intended objective of discouraging vote buying and selling as well as making naira unproductive.

However ,GGM calls for understanding and urges the people to lie low at least ,till after election and use the anger to vote out wicked and selfish politicians . Note that at Presidential level ,GGM has endorsed Peter Obi and asked all her supporters and followers to vote for Labour party come February 25, 2023.

Youths Should Shine Their Eyes- Anaenugwu

The present political class is destroying the future of the youths .

The youths should shine their eyes . Their future is at stake!

The political class is using the ignorance of the youths to further enrich themselves .

Nigeria with over 200 million people operates the worst kind of federal – unitary system of Government, with FGN presiding over the sharing of our major sources of revenue. We are presently in state of quagmire with N12 trillion budget deficit. The implication is that we have nothing to share!

What is the problem with Nigeria and what do the Igbo people want ?

The problem with Nigeria is military imposed Constitution!

Igbo people simply want a system of Government that will guarantee equity , fairness and justice. For you to be somebody in Nigeria , you must serve corruption and the masters.

Therefore ,the youths should stop worshipping the agents of the corrupted system and demand for their rights .

I have not seen senators ,assembly members discussing our fundamental issues – which is the fraudulent constitution of Nigeria . I have not seen these people discussing their efforts in amending constitution. I have never seen their holding constituency meeting to enlighten the electorates about their activities in National Assembly!

All I hear from them is empowerment! Which empowerment! Out of thousands of youths in a constituency ,how many will be empowered, what happens to the rest ! Okay ,let only those empowered go and vote for them . But a single law will make millions productively engaged ! I have heard some Senators boasting of constructing roads and I asked; what is the role of the executive branch of Government and what is the primary function of a legislative officer- to make quality law for the generality of the people.

Enough of the youths ignorance! Peter Obi has made this political season interesting by discussing issues and how to address them . The quality of presidential debate is quite encouraging ,however ,it is expected that those trying to be our Representatives should be saddled with public interest project and not how to share cakes and peanuts . Nigeria consumption system is about to collapse while our senators still talk about empowerment and sharing of federal appointments as achievement. May God save us from slave mentality .

Allow Old and New Naira Notes to co-Exist, APC Governors Begs Buhari

Members of the Progressives Governors’ Forum on Friday urged the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to prevail on the Central Bank of Nigeria to allow the old and new naira notes to co-exist.

They believe that this would ease the current scarcity of naira notes and its ancillary effects.

Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, who spoke to journalists in Hausa, revealed this shortly after governors elected on the All Progressives Congress ticket met the President at the State House, Abuja.

El-Rufai argued that the move had become necessary as the CBN mopped up over N2tn of the old notes but only printed N300bn of the new ones.

According to him, the new notes in circulation are insufficient for Nigerians.

The former FCT minister said the CBN’s cashless policy should have been preceded by the printing of at least half of the amount mopped up, N1tn.

He lamented that many Nigerians were suffering even as traders of perishable goods are daily losing their wares from low patronage.

Citing tomatoes as an example, El-Rufai said some sellers from the North who travelled to Lagos with their goods experienced wastage because buyers lacked the cash to purchase them.

Therefore, the governors appealed to the President to consider their request.

Asked about Buhari’s response, he said the President did not reply with a “yes” or “no.”

However, the Chairman of Progressive Governors Forum, Abubakar Bagudu, is meeting the President behind closed doors hoping to get a definite response.

As of this report, Bagudu was still meeting the President.

He is expected to brief State House Correspondents afterwards.

More details later…
