South-South and South-East can Only Win when They Unite – Olisa

*Unity between South-South (SS) and South East (SE) For Political and Economic Emancipation*

I’ve read alot of write-ups stating how the unity of the former Eastern region (South South and South East), can lead to an important political and economic bloc in Nigeria. But few have an idea on how this can be possible.

We should understand the importance of unity in achieving any aim. A wise man said “a house divided against itself cannot prosper.” That is the plight of what the former Eastern region faces – unity. They’ve been held back for far too long, due to lack of integration within their midst, which is chiefly caused by *POLITICS*. The Ijaw man is sceptical of the Igbo man. The Ikwerre man fails to accept his historical Igbo background and so on. What this says is that the strengths of these various units can’t be harnessed into a formidable force, owing to disagreements. And one way to heal and unite these competing forces, that share more similarities than differences, is through culture and cultural integration.

People underrate the aspect of culture in indices of peace, unity and development. Russia think the way they can absorb their former colonies is through aggression, have created more harm than good. The British knew that, trade or politics wouldn’t be enough to subjugate Nigeria, they introduced their culture – language and religion into the strategy, and Nigeria is still tied to Britian after several years of freedom. China after opening their borders to world trade, knew that for them keep and make sure that the Chinese people, who’ll travel abroad, come back and develop China, did this by injecting into the understanding of Chinese citizens the culture of Chinese. So, anywhere a Chinese man is he thinks home. We’ve had a semblance of that with Obiano’s _Aku ru uno_ campaign.

Trade and commerce doesn’t unite people more than what culture does. When I speak of culture, I mean an uncontrollable bond, that goes beyond physical understanding. That same bond that happens between a mother and her child, that goes beyond breast-feeding, happens between a people and the state through culture.

South South and South East are completely individualistic in nature, which presupposes the lack of cohesion. But with culture, and strengthening those cultural ties between the South South and South East, will result to an unbreakable bond. Let’s understand that, what unites the SS and the SE is more than what separates them. Their food and the way they cook is related. Their love for justice is the same. Similarities in tonal deflection and linguistic writings. Love for alcohol and relaxation. Their love for innovation and creativity. Their distaste for authority figures and so on are all bearing similarities.

It is left for our cultural Chiefs, Queens, and Kings. Our Obi of Onitsha, Olu of Warri, Oba of Benin, Omu Adas, Omu Chiefs, scholars and academics to remind us of what unite us and educate their citizens on various cultural similarities of the old Eastern region.

Anambra State At The Doorstep of The Great Transformation

Let us shoot straight from the hip. On March 17, 2022, Ndi Anambra will embark on a tough but hugely fascinating and rewarding journey to a Liveable and Prosperous Smart Megacity as envisioned by Cee Cee Soludo who the people overwhelmingly elected as Governor on November 6, 2021. We alluringly christened the process of attaining this as The Great Transformation. The final outcome is that, firstly, Anambra will become attractive or appealing to the world as the place to live, do business and relax. Furthemore, the 179 or so communities that make up Anambra State will be digitally connected to the sustainable ambitious development agenda of the incoming Government.

Okpoko, a sprawling slum near Onitsha in Ogbaru Local Government Area will be the starting touch point of The Great Transformation, with the planned facility visit of Soludo to the slum to launch its upgrading programme. Onitsha which sadly wears the toga of the headquarters of air pollution in the world will in quick succession receive the attention of the incoming Governor. This will go on and on as premised on the mantra of One Anambra, One people and One Agenda that will be developed holistically.

Fact is that the incoming government like any other governments will face the challenges of ensuring that the people are safe, healthy, gainfully employed, have access to clean water, breathe clean air, access to functional and quality education and more. Taking into account the local context and global trends, Soludo figures that the use of data and technology will be a more efficient and effective means of addressing the development imperatives of the state and improving the quality of life of the citizens. This model offers better use of space, less traffic, cleaner air, and more efficient civic services, all which increase the quality of life. Furthermore, using smart solutions, more career and economic opportunities as well as stronger links with community are enhanced. So when next you hear Soludo say that in the fully transformed Anambra, children born in the state may not have need to seek greener pastures elsewhere while those outsider will have all the incentives to return home, you would do well to take that assurance to the bank.

The good news is that the incoming Soludo government will harness 4th industrial revolution technologies to improve the services it offers to the citizens and businesses. That is how he intends to take Anambra higher and higher from where his predecessors stopped. You can .now grasp that the smart city idea is all be the use of data and technologies to create more efficacies in delivering the dividends of democracy and because Anambra will soon reach a population of 10million, it will qualify as a smart Megacity.

Now you can see why we have fittingly dubbed it The Great Transformation; a change agenda to which the talents, time and resources of all Ndi Anambra are invited.

Be of good cheers!!

Russia Putin Sends Military to Invade Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military operation in Ukraine on Thursday with explosions heard soon after in the capital and other parts of the country, prompting outrage from Joe Biden who warned of a “catastrophic loss of life”.

Weeks of intense diplomacy and the imposition of Western sanctions failed to deter Putin, who had massed between 150,000 and 200,000 troops along the borders of Ukraine.

“I have made the decision of a military operation,” Putin said in a surprise television announcement shortly before 6:00am (0300 GMT) in Moscow.

He also called on Ukrainian soldiers to lay down their arms, claiming he wanted a “demilitarisation” of the former Soviet state but not its occupation.

An AFP reporter in Kyiv heard explosions within about 30 minutes of Putin’s announcement. Explosions were also heard in the eastern city of Mariupol, according to AFP.

US President Biden announced he would address the nation Thursday on “consequences” for Russia and said the world would “hold Russia accountable” for its actions.

He said a Russian attack would cause “catastrophic loss of life and human suffering.

Putin’s announcement statement came after the Kremlin said rebel leaders in eastern Ukraine had asked Moscow for military help against Kyiv.

In response, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky made an emotional late-night appeal to Russians not to support a “major war in Europe”.

Speaking Russian, Zelensky said that the people of Russia are being lied to about Ukraine and that the possibility of war also “depends on you”.

“Who can stop (the war)? People. These people are among you, I am sure,” he said.

Zelensky said he had tried to call Putin but there was “no answer, only silence”, adding that Moscow now had around 200,000 soldiers near Ukraine’s borders.

Earlier on Wednesday the separatist leaders of Donetsk and Lugansk sent separate letters to Putin, asking him to “help them repel Ukraine’s aggression”, Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

The two letters were published by Russian state media and were both dated February 22.
Their appeals came after Putin recognised their independence and signed friendship treaties with them that include defence deals.

Putin has defied a barrage of international criticism over the crisis, with some Western leaders saying he was no longer rational.

His announcement of the military operation came ahead of a last-ditch summit involving European Union leaders in Brussels planned for Thursday.

The 27-nation bloc had also imposed sanctions on Russia’s defence minister Sergei Shoigu and high-ranking figures including the commanders of Russia’s army, navy and air force, another part of the wave of Western punishment after Putin sought to rewrite Ukraine’s borders.

The United Nations Security Council met late Wednesday for its second emergency session in three days over the crisis, with a personal plea there by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to Putin going unheeded.

“President Putin, stop your troops from attacking Ukraine, give peace a chance, too many people have already died,” Guterres said.

The US ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, warned that an all-out Russian invasion could displace five million people, triggering a new European refugee crisis.

Before Putin’s announcement, Ukraine had urged its approximately three million citizens living in Russia to leave.

“We are united in believing that the future of European security is being decided right now, here in our home, in Ukraine,” President Zelensky said during a joint media appearance with the visiting leaders of Poland and Lithuania.

Western capitals said Russia had amassed 150,000 troops in combat formations on Ukraine’s borders with Russia, Belarus and Russian-occupied Crimea and on warships in the Black Sea.

Ukraine has around 200,000 military personnel and Wednesday’s call up could see up to 250,000 reservists aged between 18 and 60 receive their mobilisation papers.

Moscow’s total forces are much larger — around a million active-duty personnel — and have been modernised and re-armed in recent years.

– High cost of war –

But Ukraine has received advanced anti-tank weapons and some drones from NATO members. More have been promised as the allies try to deter a Russian attack or at least make it costly.

Shelling had intensified in recent days between Ukrainian forces and Russia-backed separatists — a Ukrainian soldier was killed on Wednesday, the sixth in four days — and civilians living near the front were fearful.

Dmitry Maksimenko, a 27-year-old coal miner from government-held Krasnogorivka, told AFP that he was shocked when his wife came to tell him that Putin had recognised the two Russian-backed separatist enclaves.

“She said: ‘Have you heard the news?’. How could I have known? There’s no electricity, never mind internet. I don’t know what is going to happen next, but to be honest, I’m afraid,” he said.

In a Russian village around 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the border, AFP reporters saw military equipment including rocket launchers, howitzers and fuel tanks mounted on trains stretching for hundreds of metres.

Russia has long demanded that Ukraine be forbidden from ever joining the NATO alliance and that US troops pull out from Eastern Europe.

Speaking to journalists, Putin on Tuesday set out a number of stringent conditions if the West wanted to de-escalate the crisis, saying Ukraine should drop its NATO ambition and become neutral.

Washington Wednesday announced sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which Germany had earlier effectively suspended by halting certification.

Australia, Britain, Japan and the European Union have all also announced sanctions.

Ned Nwoko: Jaruma Bail Revoked for Missing Court hearing

An Upper Area Court in the Zuba area of the Federal Capital Territory has issued a bench warrant against popular Kayanmata (aphrodisiac) seller, Hauwa Muhammed aka Jaruma.

Jaruma was arraigned before the court on January 25 for alleged defamation of character, false news publication and intimidation of business tycoon, Ned Nwoko, on social media.

Nwoko had accused Jaruma of publishing falsehoods on her Instagram page against him and his wife, Regina Daniels.

The judge, Ismailia Abdullahi, had ruled that she should be remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre pending the hearing of her bail application.

He, however, warned all parties involved in the matter to refrain from actions that could be considered prejudicial to the case.

Jaruma regained freedom on January 28 after she met the bail conditions.

But at the resumed hearing of the case on Wednesday, Jaruma was absent.

The judge accused her of shunning the court despite being aware of the date of the hearing.

He said if not sanctioned, it would make a mockery of the Administration of Criminal Justice.

The judge, therefore, said, “The defendant knew today was for the case and she ignored the call to come to court.

“By not taking any step, it would make a mockery of the legal system, going by the provision of Section 131 of the Administration of Criminal Justice and after listening to the submission of the prosecuting counsel, I hereby issue a bench warrant against the defendant in this case, one Hauwa Muhammed aka Jaruma and ordered the surety to come to court to explain why she shouldn’t be arraigned.”

The matter was adjourned till March 17, 2022.

Breaking : Buhari To Sign Electoral Act Bill This Friday

President Muhammadu Buhari has postponed his assent on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill to Friday, reliable presidency sources disclosed on Wednesday.

A source close to the Presidency revealed that Buhari will definitely give his assent to the electoral bill on Friday.

No reason was given for the change of date following the assurance by Presidency spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina that the president would sign the bill within hours last Tuesday.

Recall that the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, on Tuesday in a television programme, said that the President would sign the bill between Tuesday and Wednesday.

“The President will sign the electoral bill any moment from now.

“It could be today, it could be tomorrow, it could be anytime, but within the 30 days,” Adesina said.

Recall that the President had withheld his assent to the electoral bill in November 2021, citing the cost of conducting direct primary elections, security challenges, and possible manipulation of electoral processes as his reason.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that civil society groups have been mounting pressure on President Buhari to honour his words and give assent to the Electoral Bill following the amendments by the National Assembly to suit his earlier opposition.

Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, has said the inability of the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) to conduct its national convention shows why the country “is in a terrible situation” saying the party has taken Nigeria back 50 years.

Addressing the PDP women leaders from the 36 states of the country at the National Headquarters of the party in Abuja on Tuesday, Ayu said a “party that cannot hold a convention, how can they lead the country.”

He said the APC has failed and the time had come for Nigerians to rally around the PDP to rescue the country from its present situation.
