Revolution Now: Police Brutalize Protesters
Police arrest, detain, charge activists
• Defiant group holds rally in Abuja, wants 1999 Constitution scrapped
• We’re back to Abacha days, says Deji Adeyanju
• SERAP wants arrests probed
• Agba Jalingo, other detainees released in Lagos
Nigeria Police yesterday deployed security operatives in Lagos and Abuja as the force arrested members of the #RevolutionNow group. The deployment and arrests were meant to prevent planned protests by the group.
The protests, called by Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore and Coalition for Revolution (CORE) and tagged national day of action, were scheduled to take place simultaneously across major cities in Nigeria in commemoration of the first anniversary of #RevolutionNow Movement, which held on August 5, 2019.
Co-conveners of the protest had, in a statement signed by Baba Aye and Gbenga Komolafe, said: “To mark the one year of #RevolutionNow Movement and re-launch the campaign for an end to unabating looting of public resources and revamping of the social and economic fabric of our country, the Coalition for Revolution will stage a massive demonstration of the collective anger and deprivation of Nigerian people taking off from two main points in Lagos and simultaneously across major cities in Nigeria.”
But no sooner had the protest started in Lagos than security forces fired tear gas at protesters at Ikeja Under Bridge and on the Third Mainland Bridge.
As the protesters assembled at Ikeja Under Bridge chanting solidarity songs, armed policemen disrupted the march with tear gas.
The protesters carried placards and banners to demand good governance. Some of the banners read: ‘Nigerians are sick and tired of poverty, corruption, injustice and untimely deaths’; ‘Say no to injustice’, ‘Yes to living wage for unemployed youths’, ‘Stop destroying our markets!’
The protesters gathered at 8:00a.m. and were set to commence a march by 10:00a.m.,
Some protesters resisted the action and the police had to shoot into the air to disperse them.
Some of the protesters were arrested by the police. One of those arrested was Agba Jalingo, publisher of Cross River Watch, who was only recently freed after nearly six months in detention.
Others were Omolara Alagbala, Kelly Orodu, Kolawole Adenekan, Fela Samson Okafor, Akinnubi Margaret, Orunsolu Oluremi, Oyebiyi Ademola, Akinnubi Deborah, Akinnubi Margaret, Akinnubi Emmanuel, Kehinde Babatunde Joseph, Adedoyin Olorunshola Truth, Rachael Ochuwa, Adeyeye Femi, Babatunde Famutimi, Akingbade Olamide, Nonike Okechukwu, and Sodiq Ogunshola.
They were all detained in Area “F” Police Station in Ikeja, Lagos.
A mobile court sitting in Oshodi, Lagos State has, however, set Abba Jalingo and 18 other protesters free.
Despite their arrest and appearance at mobile courts, members of the group in Abuja manoeuvred their way out of police vigilance and staged a protest at Berger Roundabout.
Some of the protesters earlier arrested at the Unity Fountain were reportedly arraigned at a mobile court sitting at Eagles Square on the allegation that they flouted the COVID-19 guidelines.
More arrests, it was gathered, were made at the Berger Roundabouts after the group’s successful protest.
The protest, planned to hold in states of the Federation and outside the country, demanded good governance in the country.
Although leader of the group, Omoyele Sowore, was absent, a member, who is a lawyer, Pelumi Jemigbesi, addressed journalists on reasons for the protest.
A key demand of protesters, he said, was that the 1999 Constitution should be scrapped to pave the way for Nigerians to decide on new constitution through referendum.
“The 1999 Constitution is a fraudulent document, scrap it and let the people make their own constitution,” he stated.
Other demands, according the lawyer, are the abolition of tuition fees in universities and secondary schools.
“Stop the killings in the country and sack all incompetent service chiefs.
“Stop all estimated billing by the power companies, provide pre-paid meters for free, and communities must have the right to audit electricity bills they get and review licences of all discos,” he added.
He also called for the release of political prisoners, “including El Zakzaky and his wife.”
The Abuja protest was initially scheduled to hold at Federal Secretariat but following heavy presence of security operatives, the protesters opted for another venue near Transcorp Hilton Hotel, which is close to Unity Fountain. But again, the protesters could not converge because operatives took over the new venue before they got there.
Protesters, who arrived at the Unity Fountain from the Mararaba end of the city, were arrested and taken away in trucks.
Protesters earlier arrested at Unity Fountain were arraigned at a mobile court sitting at Eagles Square for flouting COVID-19 guidelines.
Convener of Concerned Nigerians, Deji Adeyanju, claimed 62 protesters were arrested.
“We are back to the Abacha days and this is most unfortunate. We are back to a time again in our national life when the government of the day has criminalised peaceful protests.
“Today, we witnessed flogging, beating, harassing and arresting of peaceful protesters in the nation’s capital by a joint task force of security agencies,” he lamented.
Reacting to the arrest of protesters, Lagos-based rights group, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) called on the authorities to release those arrested promptly, investigate attacks on protesters, identify security agents suspected to be responsible and bring them to justice.
SERAP in a statement by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, stated,
“Rather than suppressing peaceful protests, the authorities ought to protect peaceful protesters and ensure safe and enabling environment for people to exercise their constitutionally and internationally guaranteed rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.”
It urged UN Human Rights Council, Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, African Union and African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights to condemn attacks on peaceful protests and to put pressure on Nigeria to prosecute perpetrators and to respect and protect human rights.
Similarly, the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), yesterday, condemned the clampdown on protesters.
The condemnation is contained in a statement signed by CUPP’s National Secretary, Chief Peter Ameh.
The statement read, among others: “Nigeria has been liberated from the deadly claws of military regime and extra judicial killings.
“We strongly call on the President to ensure that the blazing light of democracy handed over to him by the same electorate is not used as a furnace in roasting their lives.”
Meanwhile, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, yesterday denied arresting #RevolutionNow protesters.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Anjuguri Manza, who made the denial, told The Guardian no police officer was involved in the arrests.
“Heavy deployment of police personnel is a normal thing in the FCT; there is actually nothing new about it. It is a normal deployment to ensure protection of lives and properties,” he said
The police denial came just as the Federal Capital Territory [FCT] administration released over 40 protesters arrested at Unity Fountain.
The Magistrate, Idayat Akanni, who was to preside over the trial of the activists, had other cases in other courts and could not sit.
Speaking on behalf of the FCT Ministerial Task Team on COVID-19, Ikharo Attah said about 40 protesters had been released.
“The enforcement team went out in our normal routine operation and this time around and we made some arrest of some persons who came to protest and it is very clear that this is a democratic nation and everyone has the right to protest, to voice out but this must be done within the rules that govern the country and one of such rules is to obey the issues of COVID-19, so they were brought to the mobile court in line with COVID-19 violations.
“When there is protest, social distancing is very difficult to observe, so when they came to the court, the magistrate had several other cases in other courts and couldn’t sit. And in our wisdom, as persons with listening ears, we talked to them, and it was agreed by all parties that they should go and observe COVID-19 protocols before they would be released and they agreed to that do that.”

1, 421 Christians Hacked To Death By Nigeria’s Jihadists In Seven Months Of 2020 (1stJan-31st July)
…UN, Commonwealth, ICC, EU, US, UK, Canada, Vatican, Australia, Brazil, Israel & others written & asked to intervene
Wednesday, 5th August 2020, Intersociety, Onitsha, Eastern Nigeria: Int’l Society for Civil Liberties & Rule of Law is continuously alarmed over ceaseless and untamed massacre of Christians in Nigeria or any part thereof and the lackadaisical attitude and strongly suspected complicity of the present central Government and its security forces. It is specifically shocking that in the past seven months of 2020 or 1stJan to 31st July 2020, no fewer than 1,421 Christians have been hacked to death, out of which Jihadist Fulani Herdsmen accounted for 1,027 deaths, Jihadist Boko Haram and ISWAP over 310 deaths and Jihadist Ansaru and Jihadist “Bandits” over 60. The total Christian deaths of 1,421 included “24 dark figures”.
The above was also the summary of three letters we wrote differently and electronically submitted to the Secretary General of UN, Antonio Guterres, Commonwealth Secretary General, Rt. Hon Patricia Scotland (QC) and Chief Prosecutor of ICC, Ms Fatou Bensouda on one part; and US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, His Holiness Pope Francis and the High Commissioners/Ambassadors of Australia, Canada, Israel, Norway, United Kingdom, Switzerland and Ireland on the other. The third letter was also jointly and separately sent to the European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS and Ambassadors of the following EU Member-States: Netherlands, Finland, Poland, Germany, France, Czech Republic, Italy, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Hungary, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Austria and Sweden.
In our letter to the UN Secretary General, the Commonwealth Secretary General and the Chief Prosecutor of ICC, they were reminded that it will be gravely calamitous to sit and watch by and allow Nigeria, a country of multi-ethnicity and multi-religions with explosive population of over 200m people; to explode into ‘complex humanitarian emergencies’; incapable of being managed if allowed to explode. Calling for their immediate intervention to save Nigerian Christians and exert pressure on Nigerian authorities to respect and enforce rights to life and religious freedoms; the ICC Prosecutor was specifically called upon to break the Int’l Criminal Court’s long years of silence and inaction regarding the ongoing butcheries in Nigeria including its long delays to do the needful in since 2010 when it claimed to have “opened investigations on Nigeria”.
The Secretary General of Commonwealth, Rt. Hon Patricia Scotland was reminded about the Harare Commonwealth Declaration(1991) which affirmed that human rights are among the fundamental political values of the Commonwealth and that the Commonwealth Charter, agreed to by the Commonwealth’s Heads of Government in 2012 also underscores the commitment of Member States to Commonwealth principles and values inclusive of human rights. For US Secretary of State and His Holiness Pope Francis and High Commissioners/Ambassadors of EU, Canada, Australia, UK, Brazil, Israel and others, our letter called on them to intervene including launching their own investigations into the anti Christian butcheries in Nigeria or any part thereof and ascertaining roles played and still being played in the butcheries by the present Government of Nigeria; all for purposes of incorporating their findings into their general and specific relationships with Government of Nigeria particularly in the areas of development and humanitarian assistance, military aids and supplies, economic and diplomatic relationships or actions.
Detailed Summary Of Anti Christian Butcheries In Jan-July 2020

Eight Major Indicators Linking The Nigerian Central Government To Fulani & Boko Haram Jihadism: One of the eight major indicators vicariously or directly linking the present central Government of Nigeria to Fulani and Boko Haram Jihadism in Nigeria or any part thereof is the chronically asymmetric composition of the country’s security and defense establishments particularly their commands and controls which are now, some say, “90% Muslim controlled or dominated”. Such gross lopsided composition or near total domination of same by Muslims have been fueling the anti Christian butcheries in the country or any part thereof including Southern Kaduna; leading to ‘brothers at Jihad’ solidarity and practice among the drafted security personnel and their superior dominated and controlled by Muslims.
For instance, out of 22 top national security, defense and justice establishments, 18 are held and controlled by Muslims; with only four left for Christians. In Kaduna State, a State with 23 Local Government Areas where indigenous Christians are found dominating at least ten Local Government Areas Areas (eight in Southern Senatorial District and two In Central Senatorial District or roughly 40% of the State population), the following is the present composition of its present politico-security establishments: (1) Governor/Chief Security Officer: Nasiru el-Rufai-Muslim, (2)Deputy Governor: Hadiza Balarebe-Muslim, (3) Speaker of State Assembly: Yusuf Zilani-Muslim, (4) Chief Judge: Mohammed Lawal Bello-Muslim and (5) Kaduna State Attorney General: Aisha Dikko- Muslim.
Others are: (6) Army GOC of Kaduna: Major Gen Mohammed Usman-Muslim, (7) Commanding Officer, 313 Artillery, Kaduna: Lt Col A.K. Muhammad-Muslim, (8) Air Officer Commanding Kaduna Air Force Base: Air Vice Marshal Musa Muktar-Muslim, (9) Commander, BSG NAF Base, Kaduna: Group Capt Hadi Ahmed-Muslim, (10) Commander of the Nigerian Navy School of Armament in Kachia, Kaduna: Navy Commodore Baba Inna-Fulani Muslim, (11) State Commissioner of Police: Umar Muri-Muslim and (12) State Director of SSS: Idris Ahmed Koya-Muslim.
The rest are: (13) Commandant, Nigerian Security & Civil Defense Corps, Kaduna: Babangida Dutsenma-Muslim, (14) State Comptroller Correctional Service (Prisons Service): Sanusi Danmusa-Muslim, and (15) Corps Marshal/CEO, KASTELLEA, Kaduna: Garba Rimi-Muslim. Southern Kaduna Killings: Nigeria Unresolved Past- ADF
IGBO group, Alaigbo Development Foundation, ADF, has attributed the continued genocide in Southern Kaduna to the unresolved crisis of Nigerian federalism.
The group stated that the best way to resolve the lingering crises of the monolithic federation in Nigeria was to have had the autonomy of the various nationalities restored so that those who genuinely wish to live together under one common nation-state would do so based on the fundamental right to self- determination.
ADF made the suggestion, on Wednesday, in a solidarity message to the victims of the Southern Kaduna massacre. Spokesman of the group, Abia Onyike, in the massage said that after a thorough review of the on-going mindless massacre of Christians in Kajuru, Chikun and other local government areas in Southern Kaduna Senatorial District of Kaduna state in Nigeria, the ADF concluded that “the on-going gruesome massacre of Christians in Southern Kaduna by Fulani militants/ terrorists/ Herdsmen is a continued manifestation of the unresolved crisis of Nigerian federalism.” “The ADF unequivocally condemns this mindless massacre of innocent citizens, brought about by the brazen impunity of Fulani hegemonists and their armed militia organizations.
“The ADF believes that genuine development will continue to elude Nigeria unless the Nigerian federation is reconstituted into autonomous regions, where the Ethnic Nationalities( both majority and minority) are empowered to assert their right to self-determination.” The group wondered how long Nigerian citizens shall continue to be subjected to such a punitive culture of pestilence, mass killings, bestiality and unmitigated violence. “The ADF sympathises with the plight of the Southern Kaduna People’s Union (SKPU) who are currently facing one of the worst forms of genocide perpetrated by annihilationist forces.
We are in solidarity with them at their moment of grief as they mourn and bury their loved ones. “ADF calls on President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently intervene by stopping the on-going genocide in Southern Kaduna. The Government should address the allegation that the security forces have taken sides with the Fulani militants to wipe out the Christian communities in Southern Kaduna, with the sole aim of taking over their ancestral lands,” ADF alleged.
It asserted that the crisis of Nigerian federalism has reached its crescendo, where over 32,000 Christians have been massacred in the last decade by Fulani terrorists in the Middle Belt of Nigeria, namely Kaduna, Plateau, Benue, Taraba (Mambilla) and Nasarawa states. “The best way to resolve the lingering crises of the monolithic federation in Nigeria is to have the autonomy of the various nationalities restored. Those who genuinely wish to live together under one common nation-state should do so based on the fundamental right to self- determination. No nationality should be forced to belong to any political association rejected by her citizens. “President Buhari and his team should make haste while the sun shines. Sooner than later, Nigeria may degenerate to the situation of Rwanda in 1994 or go the way of Somalia,” ADF warned.
