APGA Crisis Deepens

The All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State has lost to the All Progressives Congress (APC) a lawmaker in the state House of Assembly,  Hon. Ikem Uzozie.

Uzozie, who is the member representing Aguata 11 constituency, announced his defection from APGA to APC on the floor of the House during its sitting.

The lawmaker had said: “Mr. Speaker, I want to thank my colleagues in the House for their prayers and support while I was away for medical reasons.

“I want to also announce to you that I have left my former party APGA to a new party, the APC for reasons best known to me.”

Uzozie it could be recalled emerged factional speaker after the unsuccessful attempt by members to impeach Hon. Rita Maduagwu, the Speaker in November last year.

Following the crisis that rocked the Anambra House of Assembly, APGA, suspended Uzozie being the arrowhead alongside two others on the grounds of anti-party.

Speaking to newsmen after the sitting,  Uzozie who is a two-term member of the House said he left APGA to enjoy greater peace of mind as the party had refused to reverse his suspension of over five months.

APGA, he further said, had been bedevilled with crisis and unjust alienation of core party men hence he could not continue under such hostile environment.

He said: “I have been on suspension which they notified me in writing and they have not reversed it at least in writing, so I have to continue my life in a more peaceful environment.”

Students protest in Kano over Zainab Aliyu

Hours before she was released, hundreds of students of Maitama University, Kano on Tuesday protested the detention of their colleague, Zainab Aliyu by Saudi Arabia authorities over alleged involvement in drug trafficking.

Aliyu, who was arrested and detained in Saudi Arabia on December 24, 2018 over a bag which allegedly contained hard drugs, was however released today.

The students, who marched through state road to the Zaudi Consul General Office, carried various inscriptions and placards.

Some of them read: “Zainab Habibu is innocent and “the drug was planted as confirmed by NDLEA” among others.

But the Saudi Arabian Consul General in Kano refused to see the protesters despite several calls on him to come out of his office to address them.

But he declined comment while the protesters turned down the offer of fellow Nigerians to talk to them on his behalf.

Speaking on behalf of Kano Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the Secretary to the State Government Alhaji Usman Alhaji, urged them to be calm and law-abiding.

“We expect you to back to school and continue with your studies as everything is being handled by the authorities concerned,” he stated.

Their spokesman, Comrade Anan Mohammed, insisted Aliyu had no hand in the drug- related issue, claiming NDLEA had since uncovered the hidden motives and the perpetrators of the act

He said six suspects were already apprehended after thorough investigation by the drug agency and they have since confessed to committing the crime.

Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Development, Hajiya Surayya Sai Mama, affirmed the innocence of Aliyu.

FREEDOM COMES FROM COLLECTIVE EFFORT-RUSSELL

The bitter truth is that no single individual can give us freedom. This is so because every individual, being a mortal, has his lapses. There was a time I called someone superman, but that was in reference to the popular perception held by our foes. There is actually no superman in the world.

Little drops of water that form tributaries that flow into a spot can make an ocean. I need you as much as you need me. We need each/one another. I talked about the broom philosophy in one of the pieces I advanced in support of coalition. You can break a broomstick, but you cannot break a broom, which is a collection of broomsticks.

Regional consciousness is better than group consciousness. Yes, it starts as group consciousness, but if it does not extend to the entire region, then it ends as a PRESSURE GROUP. Every group in the struggle for the liberty of the entrapped Eastern Region must be seen as a means to an end. The formation of these groups should never be for the aggrandizement of the actors therein. This is where we are getting it wrong.

Furthermore, it is not a matter of how many groups we have fighting for freedom, but how they have been able to work together. We need to work together. Yes, we can fight, but the fight must contribute to the freedom project. Kanu and Dokubo are just two of the numerous active forces fighting for the liberation of the oppressed. Both Asari and Kanu have the right to disagree over defined and undefined issues. Their agreement has not given us freedom, has it? So their disagreement cannot stop the struggle. Simple.

We must find a way to harmonise the thoughts of the traditional and political stakeholders in our region. As long as we continue to make progress in a direction that is different from that of our stakeholders, the freedom project will continue to elude us. Those that have chosen to abuse elders should beat a retreat. Those elders are the ones we need at this stage. The revolution must go beyond protests /rallies. Without the stakeholders we cannot penetrate world bodies. That is the truth.

A regional summit is needed now! A lot of those commenting online have not even been in a meeting with any stakeholder. We can begin to understand their ignorance. Unity is the only way out. We must come together to know what we need.
